Green Lantern Box Office Prediction Thread

DOTM's opening weekend will directly reflect how much momentum was killed by the last movie...I'm guess it will open lower than First Class because according to fans wolverine and X3 weren't as bad as the crap that was ROTF.

yea definitely in the 50's no maybe the 60's like thor because of the

3D boost:o

Transformers 2 was critic proof. That film easily sailed to a over a 400 million take domestically. It was a mediocre film that I guess the action and fx some how saved it. I just don't think people cared and liked it. Making over 400 million isn't easy at the box office. I dont see TF3 making anything less then 350 million even with the baggage of the previous one.

Yep, the staggered release dates are what's gonna kill it. And I thought Cap Am was in for a tough time overseas.
This even opens on the same day as Cap in certain markets. It is not going to be pretty for GL.

With how many bad reviews this is getting, I wouldn't be surprised if Armond White gives it a positive just to go against the grain as usual.

If Green Lantern can be as fun as the Transformer films Ill like them . Not everything needs to be high art . I want a popcorn film . I love the Dark Knight but it seems like we have spoiled and want serrious comic books films all the time . I liked Thor over Iron Man myself becaause Iron was really just a Batman Begins riipoff

Iron Man was nothing like Batman Begins... at all.

And no not everything needs to be high art. But even popcorn blockbusters need to be good. I don't understand the mentality of people just wanting brainless fun, even if it's crap.

How can you have fun if the movie is crap? How can you appreciate cool SFX if the characters involved are uninteresting?

'Superhero movies' and 'high art' don't belong in the same sentence, IMO. I've never seen one and I seriously don't think I ever will.

They're popcorn movies and there's nothing wrong with that. Some of the best movies ever made are popcorn movies.

I ate popcorn and had a huge grin on my face throughout the entirety of The Dark Knight. While a critical success and several shades of dark, I also found that film to be extremely entertaining. Requiem for a Dream, it most assuredly wasn't.

And I found Iron Man to be completely light entertainment. The darkest scenes are at the beginning, and after that it's a pretty big roller coaster. It got glowing reviews, too, though.

And look at all of the family pictures that get high marks from critics. I don't know where this idea that critics hate anything and everything that's not dark, brooding, or has some deep moral message in it comes from. People seem to whip that one out whenever a fluff movie is released and the critics pan it as being such.

I guess there's still slim hope that I'll like the movie. Kung Pow! Enter The Fist only has 11% on RT and I love that movie to death. Conversely, TDK has 94% on RT and I detest that movie right to the very soles of my feet.

But the odds that I'll like it aren't encouraging. I'm fair though, I'll be there at midnight tonight to see it.

The thing is the audience will take brainless but legitimate spectacle over thematic character driven blandness. As they should.

can't believe campbell made a dude

Having watched both Iron Man and Batman Begins, I failed to see where IM ripoff BB. These movies both deal with the origins of Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne, but that's where the similarities ended.

He's made many duds.

Campbell's best movies are with James Bond; I thoroughly enjoyed his Goldeneye and Casino Royale.

They shouldn't.

I can't subscribe to that mentality. Because it's pandering to idiots, frankly.

Oh wow cool visuals? Yea, so? Why should i care about the cool visuals and action scenes if i don't care about the characters involved or the story?

People who are entertained by flashy SFX and action scenes... even if the plot is crap and the characters involved are poorly written... well, unless they're are children, they're idiots who may as well be staring at some brightly coloured lights.

Word.

My prediction opening weekend for G.L.: $50 million. (domestic)

I'm not saying it ripped off, but there are definite similarities (some just because of the comics).

Both are billionaires

Both have a stint overseas with some shady characters and come back with the idea of being a hero.

Both blow up the overseas shady characters' base

Both come back to America after being presumed dead

Both kneeled next to and watched somone close to them die from gunshot wounds (Yusuf in Iron Man, Martha and Thomas Wayne in BB)

Both design their own suits with their vast resources.

Both had an older mentor turn on them and be a villain

Both of them had love interests that find out who they are

I'm guessing 50 to 60 million opening weekend before word of mouth kills this turd

I'm still on the 68mil bandwagon but I think the movie is going to have bad legs.

ok but the mask was so good I'm willing to ignore that as a studio mishap.

what are his others

Here's how he stacks up post-GoldenEye (being his first big studio film)

GoldenEye (1995) - GOOD
The Mask of Zorro (1998) - GOOD
Vertical Limit (2000) - BAD
Beyond Borders (2003) - BAD
The Legend of Zorro (2005) - BAD
Casino Royale (2006) - GREAT
Edge of Darkness (2010) - GOOD
