That is why you shouldnt give a first movie a 200million budget and spend loads on advertising. 100-150 should be doable.

This is why I think Marvel is smart for not going overboard with the films focused around their non A-listers. At least save the big budget for the sequel when audiences are more familiar with the character.

and this is why marvel films are all of them modest successes.

Well Green Lantern is as big as Iron Man in terms of comic book sales . Now maybe they should have went with more mainstream like Wonder Woman first but whatever . Its always a gamble . I liked it a lot . Screw it

You know what the issue is? WB were spending so much money trying to convince you that you want to see this film that I think people smelt a turkey, in retrospect the way this film was marketed really smacks of desperation - 'please see our movie....please, look how shiny it is!'. You look at Thor or X-men and the advertising is nowhere near as in your face as the GL stuff was. The Onion video the other day is smack bang on the money with regards to this film.

I halfway agree with you . I don't think the studio belived in and the marketing was all over the place and when a studio makes it seems like they have no faith in it , people will just follow their lead... The film ain't a turkey . I don't think I have disagree with more than the critics .The perception however looks like the reality

In terms of comic book sales, Green Lantern is bigger than Iron Man because DC is wise to have Geoff Johns making GL comics among the center of DC comic verse while Marvel turns Tony Stark into something despicable during Civil War.

But all of those don't mean a thing in the mainstream movie world when RDJ almost single handedly bring a compelling Tony Stark on the big screen while Geoff Johns probably screwed up the screenwriting part for Green Lantern the movie.

ah
as much as I love RDJ playing himself(people have been crucified for less) I wouldn't be so bold as to say he "single handidly" making the character compelling.

This is why I think Captain America has a shot.
Their ad campaign is cosistent but, a lot more understated then GL.

I won't say Iron Man movies are perceived as having "modest successes".

Let's face it, RDJ was the reason why the mainstream audience love Iron Man. It is also the reason why the role catapulted him into A-list after what he went through (arrest, jail sentence, etc).

Didn't superman Returns come out in 3D like a year later
as I recall it all but matched Batman Begins numbers (but with a gl like budget, lord knows where the money went)
SR was released in 3D? Imax maybe, but,I certainly dont remember a 3D release .

It had certain scenes in 3D. I know, because I saw in 3D.

Like, 95% of the movie was 2D, but a few scenes (such as the plane rescue) were in 3D.

To be honest, that format wasn't bad. You get the eye popping action in 3D, but don't have to sit through two hours of eye straining.

Iron man is there one I'll give you that, not that it's dancing at 400mill domestic or anything with the second one grossing even less. And without IM in the picture it's kinda interesting.

As seen in the second movie, Downey and co. owe a lot to a compelling script.
(especially the first act)

in fact I think I remember batman having a 3D release too, I may be wrong about that though.

Basically, when your subject matter is huge in scale, you can't half ass that ****. You just can't. Peter Jackson already knew that he was gonna have to go all out as far as the scope of the LOTR flicks, a series most fans felt could never be done justice in live action. I somewhat felt that way about GL because most of their story arcs are even bigger grandiose wise than most JLA stories.

It wasn't quite avatar but the marketing wouldn't tell you that.
best part was the little signal telling u to put the goggles on lol.

I wonder what would have happened if they got a how do I say this a more serious actor than RDJ hes great but he did make it more accessible for the non comic fans. But with Green Lantern I felt that Ryan was just being himself when he does that its tends to be good. But with Green Lantern I wanted him to play Hal Jordan but he didnt do thats one of the things I didnt like about GR.

IM is sorta the fun version of The Aviator film.

Any numbers on what GL made tonight? We got the numbers pretty early for friday.

.

Iron Man wasn't a household name b4 the movie, so of course it needs strong script.
