Iron man is there one I'll give you that, not that it's dancing at 400mill domestic or anything with the second one grossing even less. And without IM in the picture it's kinda interesting.
We probably need to adjust our thinking on CB movies. If $300 million isn't a spectacular success I don't know what is.

We are going to see this year how hard it is to break $200 million with a CB movie...none of them may make it. $300 million is something only the very elite characters reach. And IM did it twice. So easy to forget that recent movies by no less than Superman and Batman failed to get there. Now see what Thor, Xmen, GL, and Capt America do. I really doubt Cap breaks $200 million either.

it's good for the genre, but that doesn't hold that much weight imo.
I do gotta admit I'm surprised how hard the 200 mark is to pass for these types of films. Something is definitely wrong.

In the perfect world they should all be spiderman.

I don't think there's anything wrong with what we're seeing; that's just the way it is. Only the most well-known superhero movies (which IM has joined thanks to its two blockbuster movies) can crack 300 mil domestically. Superman, Spider-man, and Batman can do it relatively easily, but just about everyone else cannot.

200 is hard for nearly any genre is it not? I mean 2011 in genral had a lot of movies that didnt make much I remeber reading a lot about how this year the box office is down compared to previos years. The thing with CB movies is the audiece are they reaching for kids teens adults it pretty much all of them a case of confused identity. The last crop of CB movies has most def been teens and adults.

Well, in a perfect world, I'd like to see how many tickets were sold, that would tell the real story, not 3D or inflation. In this case, I would think B89, the 1st Spidey film, and TDK would be in the discussion.

and this is why marvel films are all of them modest successes.

I can guarantee you that WB would love to have IronMan's or even Thor's box office receipts with the way GL is looking, the way Jonah Hex looked and whatever else they have put out recently.

I have been saying for years that GL was a superhero version of Star wars waiting to happen but they dropped the ball big time. And for the life of me, I can't even fathom to understand why these guys are so hellbent on not having a shared universe. As much as I love Marvel, a JLA movie, heck a World's Finest movie would probably make a lot more than Avengers..............man that hurt to type that! :argh: But they insist on doing things backwards. WB is like Fox in so many ways. They are willing to spend but just don't know what they want to do with their characters.

Xmen did it. :o

Yeah, but when Iron Man had it's success the character wasnt considered one of the well known Superhero properties , ast least as far as the general publlic was concerned.
It is only through the star power of RDJ and skillful marketing campaign that kicked off at ComicCon, did it succeed.

No Superman movie has ever crossed 300 mil domestically and Batman has only done it once.

Iron man and Spider-man however have a perfect track record when it comes to grossing at least 300 mil domestically.

The movie helped, too.

Why is domestic above world wide lol The rest of the world fuels a movies box office to. And what how much did GL pull in today anybody find the numbers?

Sorry, I don't think it's a fair comparison to judge films 20 or 30 years apart with ticket prices, thus my post earlier about tickets sold that everybody ignored.

I guess we'll have to wait until 2012 to see what happens when all the heavy hitters compete, yes sir!!

Fair or not it is what it is. So to think it is a forgone conclusion that any superman flick is going to cross 300 mil domestically is not a very safe bet but who knows.

I find that interesting. I mean every time one of these films comes out most fans can collectively agree(in most cases) on a version more like the books that would have slapped the world in it's collective face, with it's awesomeness.

We can do it with Thor, obviously GL and probably even Cap.
Most notably we can do it with Superman. I feel like what your saying is being applied to a handicapped paradigm.

If all of these films, each of them was as close to what they could be, then I'd really like to see what the market share would look like. So far it seems the only ones to make serious bank are the ones that came very close to nailing their source material and were big names in the industry.

It sucks because Superman comes out it stinks and some analyst is quick to say the genre has lost it's luster..um actually...

Box Office is one thing, but DC is going to like at bigger numbers - MERCHANDISING.

How many kids are buying Green Lantern toys?

I hate that I have to say this, because it shows "children first" theoretically lol when it comes to box office merit. But, the box office remember will only be part of what the studio looks at when considering a sequel. Merchandising will further push it ahead.

True, but Batman is at this point, and ALL of the Batman films minus that abomination B&R would have grossed $300m today with ticket prices.

Same with the 1st two Superman films. Again, next year will tell the tale. I'm fired up to see if an Assembled Avengers is going to take down The Dark Knight, should be interesting.

if one of them dies mysteriously before release, you can bet on it.

I would agree that TDKR is as safe a bet as any superhero movie even though I have no doubt that it won't touch TDK numbers. But that I think has more to do with Nolan's excellent work than the brand itself becuase when BB came out and no one in the GA really went head over heals over it, the boxoffice also reflected that. It wasn't until after they saw TDK that people went back to BB.

If I had to guess on Superman 2012 I would say that it continues it's franchise trend and doesn't reach 300 mil.

The Avengers, who knows it could be the biggest superhero movie ever or it could top out below 700 mil.

You can tell it no thanks, Inflation tells some strange tales like Gone with wind being Avatars main competition. I don't wanna buy what it's selling.

BB had to overcome that abortion that was B&R - probably too soon to re-launch, and we've seen that evidence from TIH doing it too soon (that was a good film). Spider-man and Ghost Rider could have similar fate being so soon, I can't wait for DD though...

Well, then you can take a nice exit from this conversation then, good day.

TDK had a great performance by the late Health Ledger. Arguably, his death made the film more of a sensation than it might have been causing many film critics to call for his consideration for an Oscar. Who knows what the film's box office numbers would have been if he were still alive today.

With Amazing Spider-Man I agree, I don't' have much faith in it and don't expcect it to set the Box office a blaze. I have no idea why GR is even being made and don't necessarily care for it. DD is a movie I desperately want to be good and X:FC has given me hope that Fox can make a good movie.
