Green Lantern Box Office Prediction Thread

People always ***** about Marvel Studios not giving films great marketing budgets, but honestly, they've turned profits on 3 of their 4 films, and one of those films was hampered by an uncooperative star, and the stigma of the Ang Lee movie.

It seems like Warner Bros forgets that for every dollar they spend on marketing, they have to make two dollars back.

This is what Captain America did with their advertising budget:

I also need to remind people to stop saying its a 50/50 split wioth theaters . The first couple of weeks the studios get most of the ticket sales . Front loaded film,s is what studios prefer because they get about 90 percent of ticket tales the first 2 weeks .

90%? I mean, that could be saving grace for GL, First Class, and Captain America, none of which I see passing that 400 Mil mark.

Batman Begins cost 150M to make just like Green Lantern and it got a sequal and it only gross 370M. If this film makes Superman Returns 390M or breaks 400M, I think we get a sequel.

90%? I highly doubt that. The theaters would barely recover their operating costs from that. I don't doubt that the studio may take a bigger cut than 50/50, maybe 60/40 but not 90%, no way.

Batman Begins didn't spend another $150M on marketing though. I doubt they spent for than $50M.

I don't know if you meant that to be derrogatory, but that poster is freaking AWESOME!

BTW, I have no beef with GL's marketing, but if they spent that much, it's a big risk for the franchise.

Captain America's marketing is tied to Paramount who is primarily concerned with Transformers right now. Once Transformers opens, they'll probably switch gears. I expect the Cap blitz to start around July 3rd or 4th.

Yeah. My dad didn't even know it was out until I said "Hey, want to see the new Batman?" Marketing for Batman Begins was somewhat limited.

I could see as high as 70/30, but 90/10 is ridiculous.

The marketing costs would also cover the international marketing campaigns as well, I imagine. That sounds more reasonable.

Studios have spent a s**tload of money (much more than GL) for franchises like HP and POTC.

Um, for someone who does work at a movie theater, the studios take 80-90% of the ticket sales gross for each movie during its first two weeks. If it has legs and stays longer than 3-4 weeks, the theaters gradually get more money. If a movie's still playing at a first-run theater over a period of months, the studios only get 35% of the ticket profits.

It's all about a huge opening weekend for studios nowadays.

I don't get the point, but I'm hoping you can explain without turning this into another DC vs Marvel discussion....

considering Cap is set in the 40's, and with Cap being one of Marvels few golden age heroes (and the only golden age hero put to film so far), that poster makes total sense. You obviously wouldn't want to use that for GL's marketing, but it's a totally different film.

So far, it doesn't look like they are spending as much on marketing as other films, but what they have been spending has been on Easter eggs and retro-styling. Quite a different approach from both "Thor" and "Green Lantern".

One thing though, what it says on the main site was this was only for cast and crew who worked on it - so sadly not really for marketing. Hoping they change their minds though, cause I definitely want to own that.

*sigh*

Again, Paramount has a huge part in the marketing of Marvel movies. They are currently marketing the last movie in a soon to be 2 billion dollar franchise. Once Transformers opening weekend passes, Cap marketing will pick up.

Ah, $2 Billion franchise?

The sum of all the films that ever went to the big screen totals over 1.5 billion. After this third one, it will be over $2 billion.

BB had a $100 million marketing budget.

My guess is GL cost closer to $200 million and they are spending about $100 million on marketing.

I was referring to which franchise.

They were very off for Super 8 and they'll be very off on Green Lantern.

But they were right on point with Thor and FC, if I remember right.

I just noticed that here, and in most international markets, GL will not be out for 1-3 months.

Why would they do that? It's going to severely impact international box office...
