Fantasy Greta Gerwig to direct two “The Chronicles of Narnia” films for Netflix

I trust Greta in this choice.

From Tilda Swinton to Charlie XCX? Sounds like a Netflix influence lol

I’d much rather the names I heard bandied around beforehand like Mikey Madison or Saoirse Ronan. If they want internet buzz though, they got it. And true, Jadis is fairly one-dimensional “bow to me or die”.

oh how I hope his hair looks exactly like the original illustrations lol

Either that or he’s the voice of Aslan.

Such a casting sounds very Gerwig.

I just saw the Charli XCX casting.

Honestly, I don’t hate it. Like everyone else has said, the role isn’t super complex and getting someone like a pop singer, who tend to be super theatrical and have presence, is very appropriate for a role like this. And it’s not like a ton of other musicians haven’t in the past successfully made the transition from music into acting. Plus, a great way to separate itself from the previous take on the character.

Also, anything to piss off the MAGAts who don’t like her solely for her association with Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. :hehe:

I'm not sure about this one. It seems like a gender swap just for the sake of it to piss off the right. All it's going to do is generate controversy.

Gerwig is definitely not casting Streep to piss off the right.

I do think it's feminist driven. But is that a bad thing? Does it even matter? Barbie as a concept crapped on conservative politics and it did really well.

It doesn’t really matter as long as they keep the Jesus allegorical themes of the book which I have faith (zing!) Gerwig will.

I assume the design of Aslan will still more or less look like a traditional male lion, with Streep’s voice coming out of it so it’s more God is both gender is probably what she’s going for.

Good! Sounds super fun! In an era of mass pop culture submission to the right I’ll take as much overt aggression and trolling as possible.

On the other hand, pissing of the right is always a good idea.

All points I agree with but is it really kowtowing to adapt a character as described in the books? Gender swapping characters is nothing new but I can't recall any adaptation doing so with such a prominent character. I personally don't really care much one way or another because I never got into the Narnia series like I did with LOTR or Harry Potter. Aslan is also a fictional talking lion so there's that. As I've said before in this thread I trust Gerwig but this seems like one of those things that if true, is likely to balloon and overshadow the movie itself. But on the other hand...

I mean, I think Jesus allegory lion is definitely subject to how people feel about that religion.

I don't know, I feel like meaningless trolling is what has gotten us into this mess. Intentionally pissing people off without some larger point or constructive endgame seems self-defeating, and by extension culture wars are a mistake. Without real power to back up and enforce your point of view, all you're doing is giving the other side ammunition. Does "owning" someone ever translate to meaningful dialogue or a positive outcome?

I'm not saying the default mode of operating should be appeasement, but it seems pretty childish and petulant to make decisions based on how many people on the other side this will enrage. Creative choices should always come from a place of artistic integrity. Once you start thinking about how the audience will react you're no longer making art, you're making a product.

That said, I have no strong feelings about Narnia. I'm perfectly willing to give Gerwig's take a chance. I'm not religious, so the overt Christianity of this series kind of repulsed me. I never read the books, and I've only seen the first two films. I liked the scores, Swinton and Neeson, but otherwise they felt like off-brand Lord of the Rings, and the YA-ness of it all felt too childish for me.

Kind of funny to refer to it as off brand LOTR, given Lewis's and Tolkien's friendship.

I honestly think the only reason this movie matters is Greta. The Chronicles are dated in a few ways, especially after the start. Why the original film series just died on the vine. Getting people excited for them is a challenge and I think Greta's has shown three times her leftist instincts have worked in not only getting attention for her work work, but creating good and bankable films.
