I'm sorry are you saying "SOny can't afford to have Rockstar exlusive" from a monetary perspective?I don't want to assume anything, so I'll ask. I agree with hippie fascist that Sony is last, so it seems odd. However, since they have no problem paying the 1 billion dollars the PS3 cost them last year, it's hard to believe that their budget simply won't allow it. Aren't they ranked like 69th or something on Forbes' richest companies in the world? Hmmm Factor 5 switched platforms and went "exclusive" and so did NCSoft knowing that Sony was where it was. It could simply be a "We like the Cell. We want to work exclusively with that technology to make the best games possible." They already said that before, which is why Sony is getting that exclusive new franchise. Not sure but isn't LA Noire exclusive as well?
Microsoft can afford it as we all know, but maybe Rockstar is interested in developing for the Cell? They've had such a good relationship with Sony in the past, so it's plausible. I'm not saying it willhappen, but it could.
If after a 1 billion hit from PS3 sales and then a continued hit from buying exclusivity for every game (MS paid 50 million just for some content, imagine what EVERY Rockstar game (full game) would cost Sony) you'd have to be crazy to think that's the case.

No one likes the Cell, BTW.

Did Sony pay to have GTA "exclusive" before? They're not paying NCSoft either. They're not paying Konami. If they are/did, tell me because I specifically remember the president (maybe of marketing or something) of NCSoft America saying that no money switched hands and we just want to see how far our online RPGs can go with the Cell. Hmmm perhaps you're saying they'd have to pay now considering Take Two's financial woes? Very possible. Take Two is in a ****storm right now. Moreover, I never "[thought] that's the case." I merely weighed in two different possibilites and asked for you to justify your position.

No one likes the Cell, BTW.

I'll take your word for it.

Did Sony pay to have GTA "exclusive" before?
Actually they did.

They're not paying NCSoft either.
They most likely are.

They're not paying Konami.
They most certainly are if they want to keep Metal Gear Solid 4 exclusive to the Playstation 3. And with top Konami executives wanting to make a shoddy port to the Xbox 360, it will be this way.

Hell, Sony is helping Konami promote the damn game extensively. Look at E3 2007. Look at the presence Sony had at the Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary party. Sony is obviously paying co-marketing dollars for this game and I wouldn't be surprised if Sony is funding development in some form to keep it out of Microsoft's hands.

The truth is that for most developers, you're going to have to pay them now for exclusitivity. Microsoft did it with Capcom for Dead Rising and Lost Planet. They paid Rockstar for exclusive content. And Sony had to learn the hard way when they lost Virtua Fighter 5, Assassins Creed, Devil May Cry 4, and Grand Theft Auto IV.

Hmmmm it's interesting that you bring up Devil May Cry. So, they opted to pay Rockstar before and not Capcom, Namco, or Ubi Soft? Or...they just stopped paying this gen? I'm so confused. All of this seems so stupid on Sony's part. Again, I'm not "in the know" about business arrangments 5, 10 years ago, so I'm asking. I wonder if the earnings report from that long ago is available. I'd love to see how much it was. I remember Sony paying for time exclusivity with GTA Vice City and San Andreas. Not sure how much. Did they pay for GTAIII? I wonder how much timed exclusivity would cost someone. Hmmm

For Capcom and Namco, the reason why Sony really didn't have to pay them last gen was because the Playstation 2 had a much larger user base that there really was no need for them to take the time to port it to have a larger audience and the Japanese market was more prevelant. The Xbox had no effect on the Japanese market at all. And whenever Capcom and Namco made games for the original Xbox, they flopped...hard.

The Xbox had some prevelance in the Western market, hence why Rockstar, a Western developer, considered porting the Grand Theft Auto games on the Xbox, and then Sony paid them for exclusitivity, but Rockstar found some loophole with the deal and Sony let them get away with it.

Now the Xbox 360 is the one with the larger user base. The Western market is now the more prevelant market and the Xbox 360 is a serious contender in the Western market, you can't simply ignore it like they did last gen, and Microsoft got the practice of paying for exclusitivity really going. We're not seeing flops anymore from Japanese developers on the Xbox 360 with games like Dead Rising and Lost Planet, hence why Namco and Capcom are much more willing to work with them.

And Ubi Soft was always a multiplatform developer, just like EA and Activision.

Makes sense. I have a feeling my allegiance is going to change one of these days. I have an Xbox and love it to death; Sony's mistakes are jarring at this point. How do you not fight for something like GTA? I would have paid hundreds of millions to keep that on my brand. HUNDREDS.OF.MILLIONS.

you know people need to make up their minds. First they complain that Sony doesnt have enough exclusives and when they go and secure soemthing, they have to make an issue out of it. Sony simply cant win

He wasn't bashing sony for having exclusives, he was saying it's doubtful they can afford it, totally different thing

Rockstar: GTA IV Development Limited by Xbox 360

Rockstar creative vice president Dan Houser has admitted that bringing the next iteration of GTA to the Xbox 360 is more challenging because there's no guarantee of a hard drive in every unit and disc space is limited to DVD instead of Blu-ray.

When Xbox exec Peter Moore originally announced at E3 2006 that Grand Theft Auto IV would be coming to the Xbox 360 as well as the PlayStation 3, it was a major coup for Microsoft in the ongoing console battle. And while the game will no doubt be snatched up in droves by consumers this fall, infamous developer Rockstar is already admitting that putting it on the Microsoft platform as well has caused some challenges.

Speaking to the Official PlayStation Magazine in the U.K., as reported by Computer and Video Games, Rockstar's creative vice president Dan Houser acknowledged that the Xbox 360's lack of a hard drive in every unit has made things more difficult than they should be.

OPM asked, "On PS3 you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage, whereas on Xbox 360 there's no guarantee of a hard-drive and you're working with the DVD format. Does that create limitations?" Houser replied quickly and succinctly, "Yep." He added, "To be honest with you we haven't solved all those riddles yet."

Ever since the Xbox 360 first launched, Microsoft's decision to offer a SKU without an included hard drive was a source of much controversy, with many in the gaming community labeling the core pack the "tard pack." After all, the hard drive not only provides valuable space for game saves, demos, videos and downloads, but it's also an extremely valuable tool for developers that wish to cache data. Without the guarantee that every Xbox 360 owner will have a hard drive, developers have to design for the lowest common denominator. That said, many developers have taken advantage of the hard drive anyway since many more people have purchased the premium SKU over the core version.

Houser's concern wasn't just for the Xbox 360, however. He continued by also pointing out that PlayStation 3 development is no walk in the park. He said speaking in generalities about both the PS3 and 360 that "both have enormous challenges" and that "both have their own particular pleasures and pains."

Why are you re-posting this? This interview is really old. And as far as I remember (from reading the interview) the original article said nothing about the hard drive.

Gamesdaily is reputable source, they did explicitly sight the hard drive in the PSM interview.

http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=16019

All the previews the Journalists had of GTA IV were the Xbox version because of a contractual agreement with Rockstar, but apparently the game chugged. More concerning however if they said it seemed unfinished, because of how rough it played.

Neither version is up to snuff, would be my guess, and I wouldn't be surprised if the 360 version game out with a "requires HDD" sticker.

Though apologies for posting an old article.

Nighto.

Did someone really just ask why Zenien posted something that puts Microsoft in a bad light when Sony is concerned?

I asked why Zenien felt the need to post it again, when it's been out and known for well over a month.

And the Official Playstation Magazine isn't exactly a non-biased source.
