Guillermo del Toro's The Strain coming to FX - Part 1

The producers mentioned that Season 3 would explore how the plague affects the world globally, but I didn't expect it to be through a rapid montage of recorded looking footage. Seeing how the strigoi spread globally was long overdue, however, it felt rushed and ineffective taking that particular approach, imo.

It is handled similarly in the books. The first chapter of book 2 is a diary entry, a few pages long, written by Setrakian that talks about how the world fell in just 60 days.

I enjoyed this episode well enough, but even with the stragoi overtaking the world, this episode felt so...stagnant, for lack of better wording. The show is running in place. It seems like every couple weeks the heroes come up with a plan to defeat the virus, they try it, it fails, repeat. There never seems to be any real progression of the plot.

I like The Strain but I wonder if it's going to get cancelled after this season

The showrunners said it will end either with season 4 or 5. They are trying to figure out how many episodes they need. Hopefully FX gives them the episodes they need to finish it.

Personally I think this is the best season so far.

Agreed with season 3 being the best so far. I love The Strain, I just wish the writing was better.

Well, that escalated quickly.

I remember the SEAL team leader stating **** was starting up in D.C. The reporter talking about staying in New York while everyone else evacuated. Now **** is all over the map and evacuating seems kind of pointless.

I think they did this so that killing/sealing the Master becomes a priority.

By the way, don't you think the bad guy team needs some more muscle? I don't mean this literally but the the vampire hunters have several varied and somewhat interesting characters (some more than others but even Eph has been surprisingly sympathetic and reflexive this season, then there's Feraldo, Quinlan, hell, I even like the police captain and his well-intentioned but still morally incorrect decisions). I feel like all the vampires have to offer in terms of entertaining obstacles is Eichorst, who still has to carry the weight mostly alone for the third season. Palmer seems to have lsotmost of his importance and offers little of interest as an antagonist, the Master is there mostly to look threatening and mysterious (which doesn't work as a direct interest), the mook vampires are as interesting as any zombie in any zombie movie ever and Kelly isn't really allowed to have a personality beyond being udner the Master's control.

I say now the Strigoi seem to be getting smarter it's time to give one (or some) the Eichorst treatment (the one Bolivar seemed to have last season, where he was mostly himself but still devoted to the Master).

Agreed. The show is a lot tighter and focused.

The request for less episodes seems like it worked. I'm not sure if they spread the budget of the three less episode season over the other ten but it feels like they did. The production value feels better than previous seasons.

Less Zack is always a bonus as well.

‘The Strain’ Renewed For Fourth & Final Season By FX

While for many series the decision to end it is a forced one by the networks, The Strain was always designed for a limited run.

Back at the pilot stage, FX topper John Landgraf in August 2013 said that The Strain would produce “39-65 episodes, no less, no more,” adding “What if a television show could be just the length that is optimal for that story?” His statement echoed Del Toro’s September 2012 comments to Deadline that he believed the book trilogy by him and Hogan, on which the series was based, had enough juice to fill three to five seasons.

It's for the best. This show's biggest problems stemmed from the fact that it never needed to have as many episodes as it does, so hopefully this means everything comes together tighter.

The writing and pacing seem to be a hit and miss with the show although they're improving. The visuals, creature designs and the music are top notch.

I'll be honest I think 5 seasons would have been better. We only got introduced to Quinlan in episode 7 of season 2 and then it will be ending next year?

Seems thing will go from stretched out to rushed real quick. We will see I guess.

My concern is the show is still in book 2. So they have a single season to deal with Book 3. Im not sure if thats good or bad.

Hopefully having an ending date can make the show better. I doubt it, though.

Yeah same here, not seen any of season 3 yet but looks to me like they are still on the 2nd book in terms of the timeline. The 3rd book was the biggest one and yet will only have one season dedicated to it? Seems a bit strange and I fear they will rush the ending.

Well that was certainly the proverbial hitting the fan.

You'd have to wonder who was calling the shots there though as Elchorst seemed surprised that the lair had been infiltrated. Can the Master still organise a ruse to that level without a physical body.

I wonder why no one thought to firebomb central park? At least as a Plan B. Surely they could get ahold of heavy artillery, helos, and high explosives from a base in new york. When the park was being over run there were thousands of strigoi sitting like fish in a barrel.

They should have sealed all the tunnels then hit Central Park during the day with multiple bunker busters. That whole operation took way too long. They started at dawn and burn all of the day light just to get to the nest. But it takes about 5 minutes to get out. lol

Aww... Zack got a pet spider monkey muncher.

That was my thoughts as well.

Why not just have a helicopters fly over the city at night and drop some silver bombs mid-air? Showering the city in little bits of silver would kill many strigoi.

I also thought Fet took too long getting to the nest. It took him a whole day underground to get to the Vamps nest while the previous episode made it seem like it took him a few hours at the most.

I was thinking this, too. It was pretty poorly put together. :(
