Fantasy Guy Ritchie Directing Disney's Aladdin

Time out there jai courtney was clubbed for his horrible turn in terminator and barely holding on with suicide squad.

Worthington is saved by avatar and if not for the sequels he would be doing nic cage level movies by this point.

I think the perception is there that they were given a lot more "opportunities" to fail because of their race, unlike Massoud. Courtney also got that Die Hard sequel. Worthington had a string of prolific lead roles outside of Avatar before Hollywood seemingly lost interest in him.

The Prince Anders thing is a head scratcher on the surface, but they're not going to make a spinoff featuring Aladdin and his supporting cast for obvious reasons. So if they're looking to spin off a live action property, what else are they going to do? Iago?

I would imagine Disney has some kind of hook for the proposed series that makes it worth pursuing. It's a weird enough choice that we might as well wait and see what the heck it actually is and why they felt it was worth making. Maybe they'll lean into the controversy and make it like, a Disneyfied Michael Scott in the Middle East.

lol, Worthington is doing worse than Nic Cage movies. Last thing I saw he was in was this "Touched by an Angel"-esque Christian movie called The Shack.

So, apparently "Spirit" from the Lion King remake got nominated over "Speechless". I'm not f-ing happy right now.

Honestly, I thought Speechless felt more shoehorned in than Spirit did, despite Naomi Scott's pipes.

Sorry, Speechless was what I was referring to. Naomi Scott, good voice yes. But that song was definitely shoehorned and didn't work for that story. And its effects were generally insignificant.

Wasn't a huge fan of Lion King remake either. So hard for me to really get upset about this. Generally, I find getting upset and emotional about the Academy Awards to be a rather fruitless endeavor.

Spirit was superfluous but fairly unobtrusive (just plays over a montage of Simba and Nala running through the desert). Speechless felt really self-consciously shoehorned in there just to give the #MeToo movement a shout-out.

I wouldn't especially call either of them Oscar-worthy.

Yes, I definitely don't consider either of them Oscar-worthy, especially Speechless. People comparing it to "Let It Go"...seriously, for realz?

Both those guys were part of that next aussie actor craze but there horrible equally and I curse you sir for reminding me of that god awful die hard movie.

Its all over when you start doing christian movies designed solely to get the bible groups to the theater

Finally saw this since it’s on Disney+ now.

It’s fine. It’s different enough from the cartoon that it kept my interest.

Will Smith is no Robin Williams obviously but he did a good enough job.

Mena as Aladdin was better than expected. He was flat in some places but he did a good job.

Naomi was fantastic. I hope she has a long and great career.

I can see why they went with a younger Jafar. The role as written is a younger character, not an old man.

The songs were well done. I liked Friend Like Me. They did good a good job of translating the energy from animation to live action.

I enjoyed it, Aladdin is my favourite Disney animated movie and I think this is the best of the live action adaptions so far. the musical numbers were well done both sonically and visually for the most part, only Aladdin himself struggled a bit vocally IMO but the young actor in the role had the right charm for the character.

I thought Will did a great job as the Genie given he had an impossible iconic act to follow, he was less manic than Robin Williams but still had flair and charisma, and I also liked the way they expanded his role with the extra scenes working really well. Naomi Scott is the other stand-out, obviously she's a beautiful girl, but she also brought the right amount of spunk to Jasmine and has a decent singing voice, I also liked the flip of Jasmine wanting to become Sultan, that was a nice tweak.

The actor playing Jafar was ok in his own right but lacked the gravitas in his voice and sinister menace of the animated version, and really that's the films only weakness, it's nearly a scene for scene adaption like the others, and it's hard to compare to the classic animated versions of these films, although I'd say the Sultan not being a bumbling goof was an improvement, and I thought the switch up in the finale with the addition of the magic carpet chase was also a step up. Overall it's an entertaining 2 hours of escapism, like the animated version.

8/10

Mena Massoud says that he has plans to host a viewing party of the film next month for fans to celebrate its 1 year anniversary.

AKA "I'm still available for roles!"

Finally saw this. I’m a massive fan of the original classic and this may have had some weaknesses but I really enjoyed reliving everything. Also a friend of mine had a cameo in the film which was really cool to see and I had totally forgotten about.

Did you see the cameo and what was it? Most people's cameos you can't even spot because they were just an extra on set.

I’ll watch again tonight and find the exact timing of it.
