Sci-Fi Lilo & Stitch-The Live Action Remake

Hot take but that post Renaissance string of movies is underrated.

The Emperor's New Groove
Atlantis
Treasure Planet
Tarzan
Lilo and Stitch

Amazing run.
The post-Renaissance run was fairly solid for a couple of years. I wouldn't say it's a hot take either now or then. With the exception of Lilo & Stitch, they got lost in the shuffle competing with CG animated movies that were getting more attention like Shrek, Ice Age or anything from Pixar.

Atlantis was such a big swing for them at the time. Those designs and animation were top notch.

Absolutely.

Man if they got Tom Holland and Zendaya to be Milo and Kida, and just make it a visual feast like the OG animated movie, they'd be on to something.

Tom Holland is the Michael J. Fox of our time. :o

Wow the summer movie event of the summer!

I can totally see Disney doing a Stitch in space movie after this.

Some of the spoilers I've seen, I'm going to need the movie to give me some heavy, heavy context. Because just the one line spoilers I've seen, hooboy, there are changes that completely miss the point of the original.

I have 4 daughters who all love and adore the OG movie. We LOVED this movie. We laughed a lot, and cried a few times. It really is the perfect summer family movie. I hope Maia Kealoha becomes a star. She crushed it as Lilo. The changes made sense to me. But I can understand how some wouldn't like them. Definitely my favorite live action Disney remake. 8.5/10

Full spoilers since I know what you're talking about.
Lilo moves in with the neighbours who are basically extended family after their house is destroyed while Nani goes to college which she's been putting off to support Lilo, but Nani nabbed a portal gun used throughout the movie so comes back to her all the time and the movie ends with her showing up in Lilo's room and going to sleep with her.

Jumba is straight the bad guy here, goes rogue halfway through to try and capture Stitch, they do the climax from the original but it's his ship now and he's kidnapped Stitch so he can make him more evil and take over the galaxy sort of thing.

Both cases I thought worked perfectly fine within the context of the film, even if the latter I have much less fondness for than the original. I don't think I'd raise concern if I hadn't seen the original though. Movie's very endearing. The original is one of Disney's best and one of my favourite films and I don't think this is nearly as good as it, but it's a worthy movie that nails the sister stuff and the narrative swerves help justify its existence more than most of these. The kid playing Lilo is stellar. Hilarious. Had the crowd rolling with her deliveries.

I saw it yesterday and really loved it. The changes are a really good choice actually, I think people need to see social workers aren’t the enemy. And the actress who plays Nani is incredible, I really want to see more of her. She gives me Aubrey Plaza vibes

I'm much too attached to the original for the live action to ever live up to it, but I very much enjoyed this nonetheless. What mattered was that it had heart and that Stitch & Lilo were well realized, which this film possessed. Lilo is not an easy part to cast, especially when you're looking within a small sample size of Hawaiian 6-8 year olds, and she's about as well cast as you could ask for. Stitch is incredible to watch in live action. They nailed him, and his plush is going to make ridiculously more money.

I was very critical of the casting of Nani, but in the end I was sold. I'm happy and very curious how they'd handle a sequel which I'd imagine would be an original story and not an adaptation of any of the existing sequels.

This is why they shouldn't let us Millennials be grown ups because I see a ton of adult people on Twitter CRASHING OUT over this damn remake.

It's for the children! LOL

Hmmm….

Stitch is always fun to watch.
The actress playing Lilo is perfect.

The movie at times felt both rushed and slow. I think it ultimately was just missing energy in most scenes. I do think I like where they took Nani at the end but also still very much appreciate the animated films ending for her. One thing I didn’t like was her not believing in the Ohana saying. Also didn’t like how they changed Cobra Bubbles nor the climax.

Also AMC is gonna get sued for that new XL format lol. That screen was no bigger than it has ever been.

I saw a comment on TikTok:

"Ohana means giving up on your sister."
