Warners Locks Cast Into `Hangover' Deals
By MIKE FLEMING | Tuesday March 30, 2010 @ 4:47pm EDT

EXCLUSIVE: Even before The Hangover opened, executives at Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures had commissioned a script for another installment. Who knew it would take six months of headache-inducing negotiations to make it happen?

Finally, the participants have completed talks and are ready to sign deals to reprise. I’m told that Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms will each be paid in the vicinity of $5 million against 4% of first dollar gross. Director/producer Todd Phillips will be paid around $10 million against 10%. For Phillips, there are also escalators and bonuses that insure if the sequel does anywhere close to the original’s $467 million worldwide gross, Phillips will not make less than his income on the original. That meter is still running, and it has passed the $50 million mark.

Why was The Hangover 2 such a difficult deal to put together? It was a perfect storm of leverage: the three stars made less than $1 million collectively on a film that became Hollywood’s biggest grossing R rated comedy ever. Those stars did not have options locking them into a sequel. What they did have were teams of managers, agents and attorneys who negotiated together, determined about one thing: Warners and Legendary weren’t getting another Hangover unless the trio got paid well.

Warners didn’t make option deals with the cast because the studio never envisioned a raunchy comedy would become a juggernaut that begged for an encore. In fact, Warners’ uncertainty over Phillips’ casting choices were the reason the filmmaker gambled his upfront fee in exchange for slightly more than 15% of the film’s overall revenue that allowed him to make the movie for the $34 million budget ceiling that the studio established for that cast. At the time, only Cooper had any feature name recognition.

Cooper made slightly more than Helms and Galifianakis, but none made more than $300,000 to star in the original, I’m told. While Warners eventually cut each actor a $1 million bonus check right before sequel negotiations began, the cast was a bargain the first time around. So reps of the thesps were dug in for a long battle when the studio initially came to the table offering each actor $3 million against 1% of the gross, with a deadline attached. That deadline passed, and I heard that twice during the talks, Warner Bros chief Jeff Robinov walked away from the table and pronounced that the sequel was off.

Finally, the deal-making got done. The sequel’s still being honed, but an October start is considered likely if Helms can work things out with his NBC series The Office. The sequel will be considerably more expensive than the first film—upfront salary alone for the trio and Phillips is around $25 million, and the original costs $34 million all in. But even if the original budget doubled and Warners is paying over 20% of first dollar gross, I think this is a good bet on a film with an established audience that wants more. A studio that wanted to establish itself in comedy has a beachhead franchise, and most likely its big comedy for Memorial Day weekend, 2011.

UPDATE: Since many commenters asked, Justin Bartha, who played the missing groom in the original, will be back for the sequel. I have no idea what he will be paid. As for the writers, I believe the script is currently being worked on by Todd Phillips and Scot Armstrong, but there might be others contributing.

There are rumors that Hangover 2 will take place in Thailand.
Yeah imagine Gafliniakis going all out on male thai prostitutes :hehe:

Also can a mod either change the thread title into Hangover 2 or split this thread ?

Änd finally i really hate to be the one bringing bad news but i'm hoping that this is all just a joke from Philips and co. even though the interview seems dead serious. Not to mention the fact that WB has said that they are releasing 9 movies in 3-d in 2011

THE HANGOVER Sequel Starts Shooting In November, It Will NOT Be In Vegas And It Probably Will Be 3D!!!

Jim here. THE HANGOVER sequel is definitely going to happen - but even more interesting is that director Todd Phillips wants to make it stereoscopic 3D! I asked him about his interest in 3D and specifically about the use of the format for THE HANGOVER - more on that in a moment.

First things first, Todd confirmed to my friend Robin Leach that the sequel is happening and that he is actively writing the script (75% done). The director also revealed that they are going to start shooting at the end of November (subject to talent schedules). Leach also pressed him about the location of THE HANGOVER being Miami, which was never clearly answered.

ALL of the four core cast members are returning.

THE HANGOVER 2 will definitely NOT be set in Las Vegas. Phillips said: "In reality, those gentlemen would never return to Vegas." So true. :-)

The original movie has made $467 million so there is ample energy to get this thing done. Phillips said the original investment to get the movie out was $32 million.

Getting on to 3D Phillips said that he agrees with the statement that "pretty soon everything will be in 3D" and backed that up by saying that its like the older statement that "pretty soon everything will be in color". Further, he said "Why wouldn't you shoot in 3D" and that it was all about restraint. He liked how James Cameron showed the world that it was "not about poking you in the eye but instead it was pulling you in."

I asked him "Would you consider 3D for a comedy?" to which he said "I don't see why every movie is not going to be sure in 3D in the next three or four years..."

Of course I wasn't going to let him off quite so easily so I clarified with "And specifically THE HANGOVER sequel?" Phillips replied that he had actually talked to Jim Cameron about this because it would be the perfect movie to do in 3D. He has some issue with the mobility of the 3D cameras as they shoot with a very loose style, but he is looking into it. Cameron invited him down to show him things that he has been doing and Phillips has totally invested himself in 3D's future!

Such an amazing thing to hear from him because no one has done a modern 3D comedy and he could be the first to do so starting as early as THIS November! I am totally stoked about this sequel now. SO many things could be done to draw in audiences for THE HANGOVER 2 and imagine the morning after shown actually the way you would see it through an alcohol induced haze LOL.

So what about you guys? Excited about seeing those characters get in some more trouble in 3D? :-)

Just checked this with Hunter and he says it's okay to create a new thread.

Yes there is going to be a 2nd hangover.
The deals have been done , the release date for now is Memorial day 2011.

Also according to Gafliniakis the sequel may be set in Thailand :

I'm still hungover and I wanted to ask after watching Hangover where you'd like to see your character go in 'The Hangover 2'?

Galifianakis: Well, 'The Hangover 2' I think we're going to Thailand. The problem with 'Hangover 2' is that we have to up what we did which is very difficult. So we get, I think, kind of kidnapped. It has nothing to do with the bachelor party. We're definitely not doing that again but we do end up in an exotic location. That's all I know. I want the character to be in really good shape. I told the director that. I said, 'Can we surprise people? He takes his shirt off?' He was like, 'No. No one wants to see you in good shape.' (Laughs)

Kidnapped in Thailand. I really hope this works and doesn't become another Weekend at Bernie's 2.

Yes to the sequel, won't bother with 3D.

Yeah, I think this would be the DEFINITION of a movie where 3d is completely unnecessary. What's next? Jennifer Aniston Rom-Coms in 3D? Good grief.

I honestly don't know or could think of one person who would want to see a movie like this in 3D.

Who wouldn't want to see Zach Galiwhatchamacallem's bare ass in 3D?

the bad part of the interent is that leaks like this happen.

this should never come out. a suprise is a suprise.

I agree. Zombieland has one cameo that does good to keep in under wrap.

Thanks for spoiling it dude. Now I can no longer see Father's Day because you spoiled his cameo.

****ing amateur.

They're filming this late, aren't they? Then again, it's fast to shoot so it doesn't matter.

Zach Galifianakis Hates ‘The Hangover 2′

After explaining to host Scott Aukerman that he’s turned down several projects on moral grounds, Galifianakis said, “But a movie you’re acting in, you don’t have a lot of control — you just show up and vomit your lines out. I’m not the boss. I’m in a deep protest right now with a movie I’m working on, up in arms about something. But I can’t get the guys to [listen] … I’m not making any leeway.” Galifianakis cut Aukerman off with an abrupt warning sound as the host began to mention the film’s title, but after Aukerman pressed, “I know you’re filming The Hhhhhhhh … ” Galifianakis admitted, “It has something to do with a movie I’m working on, yeah. I’ll tell you about it later. It’s very frustrating.

Well this isn't good...

If I had to wager a guess over what a potential issue may be based on his comments...perhaps they're going a lil' too over the top and with the sequel (perhaps with Alan in particular) and he's probably upset about it.

I mean, I know that for me, my biggest fear about a sequel of The Hangover is that they're going to get too outrageous, if that makes sense. :cwink:

I mean zach's character in the first movie provided majority of the laughes. They should let him improv or do whatever with his character without question. Anyway, Mike Tyson is confirmed to have another cameo in the movie and Mel Gibson. I really dont like the Mel Gibson cameo lol. I use to like him but now that he has gone off the deep end, yelling out racial slurs and other crazy things I am no longer a fan.

At least he's being honest about it, and really, it seems like he doesn't want to completely sell his soul to Hollywood.

yet he is on the set and he will get the paycheck.

since the first movie was a hit he will get a bigger paycheck for the sequel. he is payed to do what they told him.

but noone is forcing him :cwink:

There's a good chance that he's joking being as he is a comedian and everything and seems to have a good working relationship with Todd Phillips (hell, this interview stemmed from him plugging Todd Phillips and his newest movie). I'd want to see the video and his tone before I jump to conclussions on this.

I was just about to say this. I don't know if you guys have ever watched Zach's stand up, but he gets laughs for acting serious and pissed about things. In other words, he has an EXTREMELY dry, sarcastic, and overall, has a satirical sense of humor, which is what it kinda sounds like in the interview.:cwink:

Also, check out "Between Two Ferns with Zach Galfinakis". He comes off like an ass, but it's just an act. That's just Zach. The only time I have ever seen/heard Zach be serious in an interview, is on Marc Marons: WTF podcast. Other than that, he always comes of "smug" or "rude", it's his shtick.

But it is forced if it's a contract from the get-go.

I have a filling Zack is BSing with people about that. As mentioned above that rude, dry humor is kind of his shtick so I think thats an extension of it.
