Harley Quinn Girl-Gang Movie Based on "Birds of Prey"

Because this film features female villains like Harley Quinn... Its not like this is a female JL film consisting of Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, Zatanna, Vixen, Jessica Cruz, Mera and Supergirl...

And?

Villains are different from heroes. You want a female led team up to market to girls (any age), go with the heroes, not the villains. Basically you'd have a point if this movie was about the female JL, but since it's not...

Yeah, a teamup movie with Supergirl, Batgirl, Mary Marvel would be different than a teamup movie having Catwoman, Harley Quinn and Huntress.

Harley Quinn is not your typical villain.
She’s loved by millions of kids.

Sure, you CAN make an R-rated Harley movie, in the same way that you can make an R-rated Batman movie (which many fans would love to see)- the characters can easily live in that kind of world.
Is that the smartest decision to make with characters that have enormously broad, cross-generational appeal?
I don’t think so.
Deadpool was created to live in a hyper-violent, adult-humor comic book world.
Harley Quinn was created to live in an all-ages cartoon, and continues to thrive as an all-ages phenomenon.

There wasn’t a little kid in the world who knew who Deadpool was before his movie came out. Millions of little girls know Harley and would be excited to see her movie.

I didn’t say that this movie would misfire. I said, above, that it would probably gross around 750 million- a nice hit- and around half of its potential.
Why would you severely limit your box office?

At Disney/Marvel, if they ever even think about what’s happening at Warner/DC, this movie certainly concerns them more than any DC project, because- with Wonder Woman- it represents a real threat to a merchandising line that had been owned by Disney, and solidifies what could be DC’s dominance of female heroes and villains.
And boy, are they happy to hear that Warner/DC is doing it this way.

What ages are we talking about here? While Harley originated in a literal cartoon (that no small child today has seen because it's dated), there are many R-rated aspects about her. She's basically a crazed sex bomb. In this movie she'll probably use her sexuality to her advantage, bash people to pulp with her bat or hammer. I'm not sure what a 9 year old girl is going to get out of that.. but if she really wants to see the film she can ask her parents or older sister to take her. Or she can enjoy Harley in entertainment that is catered to younger children.

If the movie makes 750 million that would be a HUGE success because they're not going with a 200 million dollar budget this time. Everything points to it being a smaller, edgier film. If Robbie wants to make it this way and WB is willing to oblige her, cool. I don't believe in sanitizing her idea so hypothetical little girls can see the movie because I'm not a little girl. If the R-rating ends up hurting the movie's QUALITY that is a different conversation.

Harley like Logan and batman can work both ways.....they will still remain popular with kids and adults.

It does feature the Birds of Prey, which last time I checked, are heroes.

I think WB might ask Margot to settle for a PG-13 rating for this movie, once it starts pre-production. They may even agree to release an R rated Cut on Bluray afterwards.

You have just described a niche version of Harley Quinn.

Harley Quinn, broadly, is not a ‘crazed sex bomb’.

These are the universal, broad stroke characteristics of Harley Quinn:
She is physically on the adorable to sexy scale, her harlequin/clown design having mid-twentieth century pinup roots.
She is fun, and funny. Zany.
She is often very bad. But not evil.

Have you seen the DC Super Hero Girls? I can assure you that the version of Harley there is not a ‘crazed sex bomb’. And yet she is very much recognizably Harley.
The audience for that version is also very likely much larger than the audience for her comic, which sells about 30,000 books a month.

If WB/DC wants to make a movie about Harley that limits the largest possible audience, that’s fine (I, in fact, will be first in line to see it). But I thought it was called the movie BUSINESS.

Makes sense, actually. Put a niche, audience-limiting version of a character with enormous broad appeal onscreen, just like your larger universe of broadly appealing characters are on their way to also becoming a niche.

Have you seen the DC Super Hero Girls?

No, I'm not really the target audience.

I don't have a vested interest in WB, I don't own shares. The only share I own is in my own enjoyment. Give me a raunchy, violent Harley.

Oh and Harley is definitely a sex bomb. Just because there are versions out there where she isn't doesn't mean she isn't one. The sex appeal is a HUGE reason why she is popular at all. That's not a bad thing, just reality.

I am happy they are making this film for you.

And there will undoubtedly be a porn parody of Harley’s Girl Gang Movie!
Enjoy that as well!

Having watched the interview it doesn't sound like its going to be so much a BOP movie as she talks about who is going to be in "Harley's Gang" and not who is going to be in the movie with her.

I hope they can fit the Sirens in this movie somehow

I’m all for the R rating. Harley and Huntress are inherently violent characters, and now they don’t have to hold back

I'm cool with it. The three Suicide Squad movies so far (the live-action SS, plus the DtV animated Assault on Arkham and Hell to Pay) have all been rated '15' here in the UK (only '18' is higher). I know this isn't SS but I think the higher rating sits well with some characters.

For the record, I’m not a prude. Harley is sexy, and ought to be in her movie. And she could be very sexy in a movie that kids can see.

Over a half century ago, Catwoman made her first live action appearance on film in the Batman television series. In her first scene, wearing a skintight, glistening brocaded catsuit, she told a henchman that, if he was good, he could ‘brush her pussywillows’ later.
Over a quarter century ago Catwoman appeared in a Batman movie. Clad in black latex fetish gear, she straddled a prone Batman and licked his face.

Those Catwoman were pretty sexy.
And they were in projects that kids could see (in fact, as I looked back at the Entertainment Weekly article about parental backlash regarding ‘Batman Returns’, it was mostly about the grossness of Penguin’s spewing black bile and eating raw fish).

Harley and her friends can be very sexy in this- that stuff will go right over kids’ heads- and it doesn’t have to be rated R.

I’ve yet to see any Batman product that actually deserves an R-rating or an M-rating.
