It’s so odd how this works. Cast a POC as a white character, like Laurence Fishburne and Will Smith, no one bats an eye, but when Gal Gadot* and Anna Diop get cast as Wonder Woman and Starfire, characters who aren’t identified by their race because they’re not human, everyone loses their minds.

*Gadot is Israelite and one of the big criticisms to her casting at the time, other than being too skinny, was she wasn’t a white woman

I rather they have an open casting call then limiting it. That's how majority of roles should be lead until they cast family members.

It depends on the case. Back in 2010 people lost their minds when Idris Elba was cast in the Thor movies. And I'm guessing part of the reason for the whole Zendaya as MJ being treated as a twist at the very end of the movie in Spider-Man Homecoming was someone not wanting to deal with the online freakout over a biracial actress playing the MCU's Mary Jane equivalent had they just announced it from the start.

And of course the infamous Human Torch controversy.

Maybe because something in the plot requires her to sing? As others have said, the character has been known to be a singer. It's not as if musician biopics are the only roles that involve singing.

I think Black Canary was the role Lady Gaga was sought for, and she's no WOC, so maybe the source did conflate Black Canary and Huntress with this mixed race aspect.
