If you're a House MD fan, the article is very spoilerific.

Kal Penn Leaves Acting for White House Staff Job said:
Kal Penn is leaving the show "House" to work in the White House (or at least, in the Old Executive Office building next door). The actor, best known for his role in "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," tells Entertainment Weekly :
I understand it was your decision to leave House. True?
KAL PENN: Yes. I was incredibly honored a couple of months ago to get the opportunity to go work in the White House. I got to know the President and some of the staff during the campaign and had expressed interest in working there, so I'm going to be the associate director in the White House office of public liaison. They do outreach with the American public and with different organizations. They're basically the front door of the White House. They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House. It's similar to what I was doing on the campaign.

Safe to say you're taking a huge pay cut?

PENN: Oh, yeah. There's not a lot of financial reward in these jobs. But, obviously, the opportunity to serve in a capacity like this is an incredible honor.

How long has this been in the works?

PENN: I've been thinking about [moving into politics] for a while. I love what I do as an actor. I couldn't love it more. But probably from the time I was a kid, I really enjoyed that balance between the arts and public service. I went to a performing arts high school, but I still took a bunch of those dorky political science classes. It's probably because of the value system my grandparents instilled in me. They marched with Gandhi in the Indian independence movement, and that was always in the back of my head. So the past couple of years I thought about it a little more. And in '06 I started this international studies program at Stanford, where they actually let you do most of the course work online. So it was something I could do while I was acting. And I thought this might be the right time to go off and do something else.
Penn's character on "House" committed suicide. Read the rest of the interview here.
Penn urged two undeclared college superdelegates to support Obama in an open letter published on The Huffington Post in May. He was a floor whip at the Democratic National Convention, and starred in a pro-Obama online ad

Does this mean no Harold and Kumar 3? :csad:

Ha. Is this for real?

To be fair it was either this job, or work in the Taj Mahal, otherwise no one could make clever puns out of the headlines.

But seriously...I know Obama wants to be the "hip," president...but what exactly makes Penn qualified for this? He majored in theatre at UCLA. He doesn't really have the credentials for this job and I can't help but wonder if this is little more than a massive PR stunt.

He's just a public liason who does outreach, so it's not a very weighted position. I'd say someone with his acting experience in Hollywood is actually overqualified.

The question is though, will he really do the job or be on the payroll for PR purposes?

finally someone is representing the American South Asians

I kind of doubt that considering he's giving up acting to pursue a career where he makes peanuts.

Does he need the money? Is it going to kill him to not get it for a couple years? I'm sure he wants to help...but I just can't see him getting down in the trenches.

You know him personally?

I can only assume Tommy Chung turned down the position.

Also...how long till we learn he didn't pay his taxes?

from wikipedia:

In spring 2008, Penn served as visiting lecturer in Asian American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He taught a course titled “Images of Asian Americans in the Media”.

Penn is currently working on a graduate certificate in international security from Stanford University.

I know that any paper Penn wrote about "international security" will piss me off.

That being said, I do salute Penn for taking the position.

I'd rather Clooney get into politics. I'd vote for him just because he is so damn dreamy.

Dwayne Johnson will run for Governor of California in 20 years.

Just watch.

The skeleton in Penn's closet is not unpaid taxes.

This is the skeleton in Penn's closet:
