The Dark Knight Harry Potter breaks TDK's midnight screening record!

IMAX only added a little more than half a million to TDK's midnight numbers. Now since they're adding fake IMAXes, it could have helped HP6 a little more. :funny:

Wow, that little? I did not know that. I thought it was more, good to know.

Wow, that little? I did not know that. I thought it was more, good to know.
There have been a huge number of "IMAX" theaters (or at least ones charging IMAX prices :oldrazz: ) from when TDK was released to when TF2 was released. I think TDK opened with 94 IMAX theaters, and TF2 opened with 160ish. TF2's midnight IMAX take was a little over $1 million because of this.

There is a pretty new "IMAX" that opened up near my house that is getting a lot of buzz and business. Most people dont know what a real IMAX theater should look like so they are flocking to all these fake ones. I'm not real surprised that HP6 beat TDK, but at least the overall one day record held, regardless of the midnight numbers..

So seriously, what are all of you who are catching feelings gonna say when this thing actually is topped (which is going to happen the way ticket prices are now.)?
I mean TF2 (a great movie btw) is at 700 million right now. It did that pretty f'in easy I think. And the pace Potter is on right now, he's got one hell of a shot to pass this movie. So what's gonna happen if it does? I mean in all seriousness, will you cry, or protest, or just ***** unconditionally about how it's unfair and it must be a mistake?

Seeing as how everyone in this thread has been pretty calm I think we'll take it just fine.

speaking of potter & dark knight, WB ripped off their own selves for posters...see for yourself lol

Yup, that was the first thing I thought of when the Malfoy poster was first released. Sneaky, sneaky Malfoy... :cwink:

HP was bound to break a record or two so soon because the anticipation for it has been even stronger after the movie got pushed back for a long time. Half-Blood Prince is this year's TDK for WB, they planned it and wanted it that way, hence the delay from last year to this year.

Sure, some fans have been moaning they're boycotting the movie because WB's been toying with their patience long enough by postponing it (and there was a lot of screaming over it, it was epic) but the box office shows people are dying to see Potter more than ever. It's also the funniest book in the series and they're milking the lighter tone for all its worth and changing things around so it appeals to tweens even more. So much for potentially losing your audience, heh.

Now, part 2 of Deathly Hallows... That one will be a real record breaker IMO. Not only they're getting two films out of one book and therefore earning even more money, it's also HP's curtain call. I'm beyond curious about it already and am sure it'll smash quite a few records. Quite a few.

We'll have to see if the movie expands its audience first. :funny: HBP seems to be doing better than OOTP in terms of drops and overall numbers, but it not by much. It just opened huge. But for a sixth installment of a series, it's not bad at all. I mean, it could be doing worse. :funny: The series has been remarkably consistent in terms of general box-office performance.

I'm kind of over it, actually. No matter how another movie performs in the future, we'll always have TDK.

Though I was a little miffed that TF2 was SO huge, and only because audiences wanted a big blow-em-up movie and didn't care if the movie had absolutely no substance.

TF2 did lose money though. The short clips I saw online dissuaded me from seeing the movie in theaters at all. I know several people who did the same. One of them even thought downloading the movie and watching it was a waste of his time. :funny:

Actually now going through the various box office forums, I don't think many people are all that hyped up for the huge openers this summer. TDK probably set a new standard in huge openings (plus it had Oscar-caliber reviews and fantastic WOM so people were rooting for it), so when it starts happening on a regular basis, it will never be as exciting as when it happened the first time. Seriously, when you back on the World of KJ forum, the entire first page of posts, and most of the second, from that week in July are TDK-related. :funny: One of them is even titled, "WHAT. THE. F-----------------------KKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!" :lmao: :lmao:

At any rate, what led to the most  among the box office gurus wasn't the huge midnights or absurd opening - it was the fact that the demand did not burn off at all until after the opening weekend, and even spilled over to Monday and Tuesday. If you take out the midnights, the first 3 days barely dropped, which is unheard of in any blockbuster, and those percentage drops I dare say will be the least-replicable in the years coming. It absolutely floored these guys. :funny:

And speaking of TDK's records being broken, this one's obscure, but someone over at Box Office Mojo pointed out that The Hangover just beat TDK in terms of consecutive days over $1 million. TDK had 40 days, The Hangover hasn't dropped under a million yet and it's on its 42nd day. :funny:

:lmao: Pretty funny how the person who hates TDK is the one that has gotten the most worked up in this thread.

Anyway...

FRIDAY PM/SATURDAY AM: Sources tell me that Warner Bros' Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince made $26 million Friday for what's looking like an $80M three-day weekend and a $160M first-five-day total.

"I guess the answer is pretty straightforward: No, Harry Potter 6 won't get close to Transformers 2," a rival studio exec emailed me tonight. "And it's faltering quickly, getting farther behind TF2 every day." (2007's Harry Potter And The Order of the Phoenix finished with a $77M weekend/$140M first five days.)

On Wednesday, HP6 broke the worldwide box office record for opening day with more than $104 million by combining the domestic gross of $58.18M and the international totals of $45.85M. And the PG film based on JK Rowling’s books still has many countries, as well as many Imax locations in North America (nationwide July 29th), to open. It added $21.9 million domestic Thursday.

Funny, how that studio exec mentions that HP6 won't get close to Transformers 2 five day mark as if TF2 holds the record for that(when of course TDK actually does). That exec must work for Paramount. :funny:

Good. I hope it breaks them all.
TDK had a lot of things going for it, but one of the big things was Batman and the Joker, two iconic characters that are recognizable to everyone, young and old. Potter's fans are mostly younger. Also, the director of the new HP film said he's not going to bother explaining the storyline of this movie in regards to how it connects to previous films. So it's only accessible to people who are already fans of either the movie series or the books. TDK did not require anyone to have seen Batman Begins to understand the film, since it was mostly a self-contained story. You can keep hoping, but it's not going to happen.

The only person I see throwing a fit here is you. That TDK's record will be broken is inevitable. It's only a matter of time. But that will never diminish its accomplishments, much to the chagrin of people like yourself, I'm sure.

I don't even see the big deal over TDK's record myself. It's what, the #2 movie of all time (before inflation)? How many people even know that outside of BO trackers and batnerds? I'll be interested if HP tops Titanic. That would be a feat.

I completely disagree, it IS a big deal. Especially when there were questions within the halls of WB if Batman was even a lucrative frachise anymore(after the release of BB which did not exactly set the BO on fire). Why do you think WB was developing Justice League? For chuckles and grins? They were losing faith in Batman and Superman as stand alone franchises.

Lets not forget the numerous box office predictions(myself included) on SHH who did not even give it a shot to reach $300 mil. And those that believed it would do less than BB! :wow: Lets not forget predictions such as those from Entertainment Weekly who predicted it would be the #6 top movie of the summer grossing $255 mil!!!

Of course, hindsight is now 20/20 and I'm sure a lot of people will go and on and on about how of course this movie would be a complete smash, blah blah blah. Fact of the matter is, what this movie accomplished is remarkable. This character has once again placed itself in the public's consciousness and TDK has catapulted Batman right next to HP as WB's franchise to be reckoned with. Think about the character's positioning in 1998 compared to where it is now. That's no small feat.

What this movie accomplished, including all its records, is in fact, a big deal.

wait for DH parts 1 / 2. that's harry's grand finale. i wont say it will be titanic numbers, but..it will most likely give TDK / Titanic a serious run for it's money.

Records are made to be broken. TDK was amazing, that's all that matters.

The fact that TDK made a lot of money is important, but the record itself isn't terribly significant, IMO. Would WB be much less happy if TDK made over a billion but was "only" the fifth highest grossing movie of all time? If HP passes it that won't take away TDK's billion dollars, it'll just drop to third on the highest gross list. #1 is an important record to me, everything else is meh. That's just me, though.

Believe what you want but........

It wont pass TDK for 2nd.

Misleading thread title, it may have beat the midnight record, but as to the other 23462345 records that TDK made, including passing 1 billion, the wizard wont come close.

^So was the first and that didn´t stop people from going to see either, sadly.

I´m sure HP6 will pull huge numbers, easily. Beat TDK is a whole other game.

Oh and I almost forgot.

I'm worked up? Get real. I'm annoyed at everyone taking it personal when ever something is announced to be getting close to their precious Dark Knight. Mostly people like you. The ones who can't see their own bias. Especially when you've gone to great lengths to put words in my mouth. I never said it would "diminish any "accomplishments", whatever they are, seeing as though its the second highest grossing film of all time in an era where ticket prices are soaring. You know why people can't just walk into Harry Potter's new movie and enjoy it if they haven't seen the others? Because it's a SEQUEL. Generally thats what happens with Sequels, their continuations. And I don't know where you live but Harry Potter strands ALL ages. But then again, that has abolutely nothing to do with anything other than (big surprise) you throwing subliminals at the Potter films. And let's get something straight. In YOUR world, it was BATMAN and the Joker who sold the movie. In the real world, It was because the guy who played the Joker died, and people wanted to see the role that was so heavily rumored to have killed him. The Joker sold the movie. And I'm sure you hear that all the time, much to your "chagrin" no doubt. There are plenty of whiney little fanboys all over this board upset at the very idea that TDK will be surpassed. And you know it. Once again to your chagrin no doubt. Of course theirs lots of people who don't care. So, obviously I wasn't talking to them. However, their are PLENTY little fanboys who are seemingly highly upset about it. Oh and I don't hate the movie. I just don't like it. :whatever:

kinda lost you there...

Least you didn't **** on me and call me a mindless idiot for liking it.

till 2012

Yeah. In fact arguing is probably a moot point. Because that **** ^^^^ is inevitable. I probably just wasted my time, once again.:csad:

I do something many people dont here - respect peoples opinions, (no sarcasm intended here) if you liked it then, you liked it :woot: and, really, im one of the many in the minority who actually liked SPIDER-MAN 3, so...

Yeah. In fact arguing is probably a moot point. Because that **** ^^^^ is inevitable. I probably just wasted my time, once again.:csad:

but also, then again, if BB3 is the final Batman Film, for a while at least, then thats gonna make serious serious bank. it's all about anticipation, that being the final sequel, and good word of mouth. I really dont care, as i enjoy BOTH Potter & TDK, so if he surpasses it, so what? as long as complete and total **** like, say, home alone 4 (which i know was a tv movie btw, just saying if an epic fail like that was ever in theaters) or gigli doesent pass it, then, I'm calm :woot::woot:

I stopped reading right there...

Everyone? I must have a reading comprehension problem because, in this topic at least, I don't see anyone taking it personal, let alone everyone. Where are these masses that are frothing at the mouth over the possibility of their precious movie being upstaged? :yay:
Mostly people like you. The ones who can't see their own bias. Especially when you've gone to great lengths to put words in my mouth. I never said it would "diminish any "accomplishments", whatever they are, seeing as though its the second highest grossing film of all time in an era where ticket prices are soaring.
I never claimed that you said that. That comment was made in regards to you being so unnecessarily aggressive in your post. Seriously, take a look at your post and then look at the ones that preceeded it. There wasn't anyone getting worked up about anything, and yet your post would make one think that everyone in this topic had their torches and pitchforks at the ready. My point was that nobody's going to forget about TDK or its significance just because a movie makes more money than it did. B89, like TDK, was also immensely successful and also redefined what a comic book movie could be, and people certainly haven't forgotten about it yet.
You know why people can't just walk into Harry Potter's new movie and enjoy it if they haven't seen the others? Because it's a SEQUEL. Generally thats what happens with Sequels, their continuations.
And TDK wasn't? If you'd taken the time to slow down and read what I was saying, you'd see that I was explaining that TDK can also work as a stand alone film. The new HP doesn't have that luxury, so it can't bring in new fans in the same way that TDK could. People that had never seen Batman Begins and didn't have much knowledge about Batman could just walk in and see TDK and still have a good understanding of the story. I'm not so sure the same could be said of the new Potter film.
And I don't know where you live but Harry Potter strands ALL ages. But then again, that has abolutely nothing to do with anything other than (big surprise) you throwing subliminals at the Potter films.
You're trying to read an aggressive meaning into my words where none was intended. When I said that Potter's fans were mostly younger, I was not referring to just children. I meant 30 (maybe even 40) years and younger. Think about the ages of these two franchises for a minute. Harry Potter's been around for 12 years. Batman's been around for 70. There's a lot more people out there that are familiar with Batman than with HP, just because he's been around so much longer.
And let's get something straight. In YOUR world, it was BATMAN and the Joker who sold the movie.
That duo made a blockbuster in 1989, and did it again almost 20 years later. Why is that so hard for you to believe?
In the real world, It was because the guy who played the Joker died, and people wanted to see the role that was so heavily rumored to have killed him. The Joker sold the movie. And I'm sure you hear that all the time, much to your "chagrin" no doubt.
Actually, I appreciate you giving me something to laugh about. :funny: I have no doubt that Heath's death did bring some extra money to the film, but not enough to make it a blockbuster. While he was a rising star after Brokeback Mountain, his movies simply did not bring in that kind of money. And what is actually his last movie, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, is coming out in the next couple of months, and isn't going to be nearly as successful as TDK was. So your theory that it was Heath's death that brought in all that money is quite silly.
Where are they? They seem to be steering clear of this topic for some reason.
Oh and I don't hate the movie. I just don't like it. :whatever:
I never said that you hated it. Although I do find your behavior towards it and its fans to be unusually aggressive and mostly unwarranted. I mean, there definitely are people who put TDK on a pedestal (I'm guilty of it myself, sometimes), but there's nobody here going "OMG HARRY POTTER SUCKS, DEATH TO POTTER!!11!!!!111one" just because of this silly box office thing. Hell, I'd not be surprised if a lot of people posting here are fans of both franchises.

This thread is dated and pointless. HP6 took five days to make what TDK made in a weekend.
