Has Batman hurt the genre where costumes are concerned?

I agree. Now back to the argument that the GA doesn't care. Why are the filmmakers trying so hard to cater to nonexistent demands, huh? Who exactly is out there asking for comic book movies to be more realistic?
Something else I've thought about; I've defended and will continue to defend the choice to give the X-Men a team uniform onscreen. (Say what you will about the execution) But what about the villains? The Brotherhood do not conform to the standards of society. They don't live like humans, they don't accept their human names, so is it really such a stretch that they wouldn't conform to "human" standards of dress? Mind you, I'm not saying I would want to see Ian McKellan in red tights & purple trunks, but is it truly unbelievable that his followers could have looked a little more ostentacious?

It comes from film makers who arent fans....in their minds they have to explain why a person would put on a costume and fight crime. Two fan directors Raimi and Favreau being fans of Spidey and IM knew what they were doing. In fact these two probably have the most faithful costumes in comicbook history...count Superman the movie amoung that number.
Nowhere was the Spidey costume justified or explained away...although people complain that a poor kid couldnt make that suit(these tend to be the same people who want the mechanical webspinners which to me would be more expensive to make)....same can be said for Iron Man. Yes we see Tony Stark build the suit but its so beyond modern tech that its not a real suit.
These movies took advantage of the fact that people paid 12$ to see a superhero movie.
It bothers me that a plot point had to be added to Captain America to explain the costume..a staple of comic book movies. Let me rephrase that. It bothers me that they didnt use the excuse from the comics to explain the costume. Imagine if one of these top directors were given the task of remaking Star Wars....are we going to have a few scenes to explain "lightspeed" or "the Millenium Falcon" of Chewbacca the wookie.
or a remake of Dick Tracy....are we going to do without the grotesque rogues gallery because they arent realistic????

There is much truth in your post, roach. But Spider-Man's costume was justified a little bit; the color scheme came from the markings of the spider that bit him & the costume itself was needed for the theatircality of the NYWL.

I just dont know what goes thru peoples minds.....funny that the same director that feels the need to explain the suit didnt feel the need to explain why a man could turn into a wolf

he got bitten by another werewolf... that's not an explanation??

I think it has to do with visual cues....we've had tons of werewolf movies over the past 4 or 5 decades

I think there is a lot of trepidation when it comes to Captain America and I think both Marvel and the director want to be as careful as they can...think about it, why has there never been a Cap animated series??

he got bitten by another werewolf?? that's not an explanation

No I got that. In the universe of the werewolf pics being bitten by a werewolf turns one into a werewolf....my point is it was never explained away like Caps suit is...because there is no way the GA will believe a man can turn into a wolf.

the GA likes american idol....they're morons....if I had my way, you wouldn't be allowed into a super hero movie unless you passed a short 10 question quiz....if you fail, you don't get a refund for the ticket and you get slapped in the head for being a dumbass

in the 90's there was going to be a Cap cartoon by Saban

"was" does not count....he's the perennial guest star as he's appeared in almost every Marvel animated series and they make it known that he is a very important guy

his adventures are damn near tailor made for an animated series, so why has there never been one?? I think it's because the character scares people and no one wants to be the guy who ****ed up Captain America

the GA isnt the problem...its this percieved notion that the GA cant wrap their minds around superheroes

but they watch **** like American Idol and Desperate Housewives....Im honestly surprised they can feed themselves

might have more to do with his villains being mostly nazis and you cant show the swastika and vastly other restrictions that cartoon makers ran into.
In the Spiderman animated series: Spidey wasnt allowed to punch anyone, no children could be in peril,no vampires could behave in traditional ways....

Nazis!!!! ruining my entertainment

Im sure the Iron Man armor was easy, its armor, its solid, you don't have to worry about it being "form fitting" like Spider-Man or the X-men

And if everyone wore armor in the comics the filmmakers probably wouldn't have a problem. So in truth, it's not that the directors are so much worried about the costumes appealing to the audience; the costumes don't appeal to them.

Ironman and this new pic of Thor as presumably Cap will prove wearing costumes is never a problem. Hell kickass has been widely accepted with open arms.

The movies would flop. We are the minority.

If some filmmakers had their way there'd be no costumes at all. Remember what Kevin Smith said about his doomed SUperman project? The producer wanted no tights, no flights.

yes I remember that....apparently the costume would be in different pieces and would look more like armor and he didn't want to see Superman taking off or landing....

I didn't understand that at all

the whole change from supervillains to "agents of Fate" would precipitate the removal of the costumes

I have friends who like the movie but have ZERO knowledge that it was a comic

Well, did we ever hear that from Peters himself or just Smith?

Nah, not that I know of anyway. But I see no reason for Smith to make up something like that. Besides, Peters has had HOW many years to refute it?

yea Smith has even said he knew he was getting paid to just execute a preset concept

and when you read it, it really just reeks of that studio exec arrogance

Yup.
I'm still a little surprised they didn't try to put Spidey in leather.
