Has Batman hurt the genre where costumes are concerned?

I agree. Now back to the argument that the GA doesn't care. Why are the filmmakers trying so hard to cater to nonexistent demands, huh? Who exactly is out there asking for comic book movies to be more realistic?
Something else I've thought about; I've defended and will continue to defend the choice to give the X-Men a team uniform onscreen. (Say what you will about the execution) But what about the villains? The Brotherhood do not conform to the standards of society. They don't live like humans, they don't accept their human names, so is it really such a stretch that they wouldn't conform to "human" standards of dress? Mind you, I'm not saying I would want to see Ian McKellan in red tights & purple trunks, but is it truly unbelievable that his followers could have looked a little more ostentacious?

It comes from film makers who arent fans....in their minds they have to explain why a person would put on a costume and fight crime. Two fan directors Raimi and Favreau being fans of Spidey and IM knew what they were doing. In fact these two probably have the most faithful costumes in comicbook history...count Superman the movie amoung that number.
Nowhere was the Spidey costume justified or explained away...although people complain that a poor kid couldnt make that suit(these tend to be the same people who want the mechanical webspinners which to me would be more expensive to make)....same can be said for Iron Man. Yes we see Tony Stark build the suit but its so beyond modern tech that its not a real suit.
These movies took advantage of the fact that people paid 12$ to see a superhero movie.
It bothers me that a plot point had to be added to Captain America to explain the costume..a staple of comic book movies. Let me rephrase that. It bothers me that they didnt use the excuse from the comics to explain the costume. Imagine if one of these top directors were given the task of remaking Star Wars....are we going to have a few scenes to explain "lightspeed" or "the Millenium Falcon" of Chewbacca the wookie.
or a remake of Dick Tracy....are we going to do without the grotesque rogues gallery because they arent realistic????

There is much truth in your post, roach. But Spider-Man's costume was justified a little bit; the color scheme came from the markings of the spider that bit him & the costume itself was needed for the theatircality of the NYWL.

I think it has to do with visual cues....we've had tons of werewolf movies over the past 4 or 5 decades


I think there is a lot of trepidation when it comes to Captain America and I think both Marvel and the director want to be as careful as they can...think about it, why has there never been a Cap animated series??

No I got that. In the universe of the werewolf pics being bitten by a werewolf turns one into a werewolf....my point is it was never explained away like Caps suit is...because there is no way the GA will believe a man can turn into a wolf.

might have more to do with his villains being mostly nazis and you cant show the swastika and vastly other restrictions that cartoon makers ran into.
In the Spiderman animated series: Spidey wasnt allowed to punch anyone, no children could be in peril,no vampires could behave in traditional ways....

And if everyone wore armor in the comics the filmmakers probably wouldn't have a problem. So in truth, it's not that the directors are so much worried about the costumes appealing to the audience; the costumes don't appeal to them.
