Has Goldeneye's popularity been influenced by the games?

At one time, I was under the impression that Goldeneye wasn't considered to be one of the better Bond movies. Decent but not a classic. But for example, on imdb, it's one of the higher rated Bonds, beating out all the George Lazenby, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton movies. On the other hand, all the other Pierce Brosnan movies are among the lowest rated Bonds.

I get the impression that due to Rare's Goldeneye being considered a classic in the fps genre, the movie it's based on is considered a classic by association. Does it stand up on its own? Or are a lot of its fans people who enjoy watching it to pick out the source of their favorite levels and characters?

It's probably true for some of its fans, but speaking personally, no. Goldeneye was the first Bond film I saw in the theater when I was 12. I even remember that the theater was freezing cold. I loved it. I saw it again, took a friend with me who had to lie about what he was doing because his dad was a strict Mormon. A few months down the line I taped it off of HBO and watched it dozens of times. Then the game came out, and I freaked for that too.

I still like that movie quite a bit. Still consider it one of the better Bond movies. I love the tank chase, it's got my favorite Bond song, Famke Jensen is a top five Bond girl, and the fight at the end is probably second only to the train fight in From Russia With Love.

Does this need it's own thread?

Anyway, I'm sure the game helped continue its popularity, but the game came out almost two years after the film was released and only ensnared children of the mid-late 1990s. GoldenEye is simply considered one of the best Bond movies because it had most of the trappings people wanted from a classic Bond movie (action, chases, quips, gadgets, a great villain, a great femme fatale, evil Russians, etc.) and Campbell executed in a very dynamic way. He brought a darker, more atmospheric tone to the proceedings that matched the sense of loss and Cold War nostalgia the character was going through.

In short, it tackled the fact most people thought Bond was tired and boring head on (ex: "Cold War relic," as said by a woman M) and proved the assertion wrong. Plus it was much more exciting and entertaining than the two Timothy DAlton duds that audiences rejected in the 1980s. Brosnan was the heir apparent since 1986, so fans and the GA ate that up as well. It was in short, the perfect Bond film for the 1990s, just as Casino Royale was the perfect Bond movie for the post-9/11 2000s.

Personally, I rank GE among the top 5 Bond films ever released.

This should be merged with the Bond thread. No need for this to have it's own thread since it's been discussed in the Bond thread several times. I'll PM Hunter.

I was gonna say something, but DA beat me too and said it perfectly.

Also, Goldeneye is my #2 favorite Bond movie behind From Russia With Lov

I'll admit it, the Goldeneye game turned me into a Bond fan.

The movie was my introduction to the Bond universe. The game was my introduction to FPS and the world of video games outside of Mario and Sonic.

The game was awesome but it never influenced my opinions on the film. I remember when it was in theaters people I knew were raving about it. Goldeneye would probably still be regarded as one of the better Bond films without the game.

Yeah, people forget that after it came out people raved about Brosnan the way Craig's fans rave now.

Same for me. I spent many a weekend shooting and karate-chopping my friends in that game. Though in contrast to what the OP is suggesting, I actually kind of hate the movie. :/

The film and the game, which is very influential, have a strong nostalgic following with the generation of people that grew up with them. IMO they both stand up on their own two feet.

Haha, its hard for me to answer the op because both were completely new to me. Do I like the movie only because it was the first bond film for me? Or because of the game? Or was it simply a good flick?

In retrospect, I do think it was a good film. The best of the brosnon era (though that doesn't say much at all, the rest were crap). I guess I would have to say that my enjoyment was a perfect storm of a decent movie igniting my love of the franchise with a game that completely blew me away. Both were great for what they were, and being so connected made it even better.

Anybody got Reloaded?

Yes. I quite like it. It plays alright. I thought it was fun to see certain things updated to a modern setting but keeping the general spirit. I prefer moving forward with original stories like Everything or Nothing and Blood Stone, though.

GE is great Bond film. I like TND. TWINE is his weakest IMO. And the first half of DAD is good. But yeah, this thread should be merged.

I played Reloaded when it was just GoldenEye Wii. ;) It is probably the best Bond game since EON. It's not as good as the original, but it's better than any other Activision effort and the motion controls were surprisingly amazing. It was both nostalgic and refreshing to play a good shooter that wasn't called COD. But I'm finding it harder to be interested in that genre.
