Has Marvel gone too far

Just off the top of me head

-pretending to be dead to his students,
-using his mutant powers in school to read his teachers minds,
-reading his classmates minds to gain avantages in sports
-pretending to be powerless to his xmen and sending them to fight magneto (!) as part of a 'test'
- Mindwipping Beast's X-girlfriend (yes that was intentional) and most of his close friends.

- Threatening to mindwipe Blob upon his attempt to turn down X-Men membership.

- Keeping feelings of actual love from Jean Grey, some may say that was the right thing, however it still hurt Jean's feeling he felt that way.

- Mindwipping Magneto

- Trying to control his x-girlfriend, Amelia.

Professor X is probably more of an anti-hero, come to think of it, though the reason they make him like this is most likely to display that he and Magneto are just as ruthless as each other, just fighting for different beliefs.

I normally don't post on this site (only the movies but just had a thought to share). Does anyone else think that Marvel is going too far to try and get sales? The stories are cool but they are stripping away from the characters in my opinion. Change is always good but there are some things you can't undo. Off the top of my head:
  • Spiderman has unmasked
  • Wolverine's origin is being untold
  • Prof X is an ******* that shoots people.
It just seems that they are taking away from the fundemental characters to increase sales. Spidey's secret identiity was a core part to his character. Wolverine was the mysterious bad ass. After Origin he became a guy that was a ***** as a kid and accidentally killed some chick. Prof X was the equivilant of Malcom X in the Marvel Universe. A peaceful protester hoping for equal rights.... Just food for thought.

well. spidey unmasking is kool, it's new and he was getting boring. (but i still liked the boreing stuff)

i don't care what they do with wolverine, as long as he's kicking ass and taking names.

and Prof X was ALWAYS and assh***. he use to always yell at his students, i swear i thought his was gonna back slap them at any given time, and he was a predator lusting after jean like he use to (ok, may have gone to far with that)

my point is, Marvel will get stale every now and then so some things are gonna have to change. and just because spidey is spidey doesn't mean that they CAN'T change him. saying unmasking was a core part of his character is like saying "College is a part of him, he should still be there" or "he's suppose to be the single, puny parker. marvel killed him" unmasking is a sign of growth IMO, and i, for one, welcome it.

Used to be, they made a good product to make a profit. Good product=money. The two were interchangable.

They still are. You just don't realize that "good product" isn't just necessarily something that you like - it's something that causes controversy.

Just for the record I am enjoying these stories for the most part. Civil War is really good as is Origins and Endings, it's just a concern that I have. Due to the unmasking there can never be another story about Peter accidentally leaving his mask somewhere that could blow his identity. I'm not even a huge spiderman fan so it won't effect my reading habits of the book. I am a wolverine fan but am feeling indifferent about the character. He's no longer the mysterious bad ass with an internal conflict. He way more bad ass but has now the whole air of mystery is gone. It just strips away from the character in my opinion. For the record Prof X may not have been the greatest guy in the world but he wouldn't have taken out a gun and blown someone's head off or everything he did in deadly genesis.

i liked what prof did in Deadly Genesis. it was kool

I think some things are crossing the line,Wolverin`s "origin" and history is one.But the main one is Spider-Man reveiling his identity, this is something that will be re-conned someday, people can bet their lives on it.

True but it takes away from the future stories.... Just like the Pheonix dying means nothing anymore

I think now they're really starting to detract from the essence of what Spider-Man once was.

They still are. You just don't realize that "good product" isn't just necessarily something that you like - it's something that causes controversy.

1 - I happen to like the product right now.

2 - So anything that causes controversy is good? What's your reasoning here? Please don't argue semantics about the meaning of "good." You know what "good" means.

i'm tired of people forgetting that marvel is a damn business. and like any business, their one concern is making a profit. plain and simple.

used to be, making a profit was releasing 8 varient covers per issue, new costumes every other month, and the clone saga.

recently, fans have matured a bit, and making a profit means putting out solid stories, with big name talent. i think civil war places under this umbrella. it's thought provoking, and i think most will agree, a pretty damn good read. also, wolverine can only go on so long before the mystery grows thin. while, i wasn't a fan of origin, it was well written and well drawn (marvel's current way of profit-making)...

so, is marvel going to far? i don't think so. i'm not afraid of change. so long as it's entertaining change that's drawn pretty.

Agreed. It was like someones arguement that Spider-Man is unrecognizable now than from the 1960's. Well, of course! It's 45 years later. What do you want them to do, keep everything the same, don't make ANY changes to anything what so ever. If you keep everything the same, and keep things into the same simple formula, over, and over, and over, and over again...you're not going to gain any kind of new readership.

As time moves on the world around us changes. And these fictional characters that we all love are going to have to change with the times as well. Whether it's a good change or a bad change is what brings us all here to debate. But to keep the characters fresh with the times and with the changing generations...you HAVE to make some kind of sacrifices with characters...and take chances.
