Have You Ever Competed In A Karate Tournament?

Which, as everybody should know is the song played when Daniel-San kicks Cobra Kai ass in Karate Kid: Part I.

EDIT: Feeling majorly stupid for not getting the 'spleen' reference at first, thereby now ruining the joke. Ain't it grand?
boyscout didn't get it, apparently :(

I like it how in the second one, Chosen just blocks that kick, thus making Daniel-san look like a ******-san

I also believe he actually laughs in Daniel-San's face and berates him for using such a ******ed technique. Which it is, by the way, but it made for a great scene, to be remembered by all. Except boyscouT :(.

i wonder how many times that move has been attempted in a real bout?

i also wonder many times it's been sucessful

Anyone remember "No retreat, No surrender". It was far funnier than Karate Kid or "The Last Dragon" with Bruce Leeroy.

it's basically just a jumping front kick, with his arms held up in the air like a ****** when they should be blocking his face from getting crushed.......

It's genius, if you haven't already check out no retreat no surrender it's a low budget feast including an early Role for JKVD as "The Russian" and Bruce Lees ghost replacing Mr Myaghi in training the teen hero. So bad it's brilliant.

Exactly. The 3 finishing moves from Karate Kid, consisted of a jump kick, 2nd was blocking, and the 3rd was just what some sort of kendo sequence?

can anyone tell me the advantages of competition fighting, i've never quite understood since most of the time it differs from what would be encountered in a real life situation.

except for accolades, i can't see a beneficial reason for them.

Unless you fight opponents you don't react quickly and it depends on the type of competition how effective the techniques used would be in real life.

but this can all be dealt with during a sparring/fight session during a training session.

I suppose it does perhaps give people the experience to fight against other people if they come from a small group.

Within a club you are always going to get that clubs style tricks etc. It's not really the same specially at a decent level. In particular in Vale Tudo type styles. Although that's not Karate. Check out a Kyokushinkai Karate tournament to see the benefits. It's the only type of Karate I have any time for.

It's not meant to simulate actual fighting. It's more or less to help you refine techiniques with a live opponent. Tournaments just up the competitive anty to see who's the best at it. In my experience, it was more for the dojo's to thump their chests than anything else.

I took karate for about 7 or 8 years, and whenever I got into a real scuffle, there was only ever a handul of moves I'd use, most simple kicks and punches, with a few akido techniques to put the person into submission. Sure I could've thrown a jumping, spinning crescent kick, but it's too fancy and expends too much energy, and if you miss you're screwed. In a tournament, you try to pull off the more difficult techniques to surprise your opponent and score points.

I didnt do too many tournaments. Competed in the Garden State Games a few times, and each time got eliminated in the group semifinals when I got disqualified for hitting people in the head. Our dojo didnt teach people to shy away from head contact, like they do at tournaments. So I was pretty much at a competitive disadvantage in a tourney, but i would've cleaned their clocks in a real fight.

I competed in a karate tournament(open to all styles of martial arts) two days ago & I got 3rd in forms & first in sparring.

If you have ever competed in a karate tournament, what was your experience like?
I competed in tons, but i guess my shining moment was during a USTU(United States Tae Kwon Do Union) state tournament. I pulled first in forms and first in sparring. Undefeated state champ biotchs!
