He-man Sequel Series (Netflix)

I think lespaul had a fair assessment.

I think the show would've been better if they had say an extra five episodes or an extra season to set up the new status quo rather than break it all up at the start.

The lengte of the show is fine the way it is, I think at least. More episodes would probably just mean more solo Teela stuff. They would stretch that storyline out. I think you could actually cut one or two episodes, that final battle felt a bit long.

The people who are really hating on this need to go back and watch the old show. I loved it as a kid, I had the toys, but if you watch it now it kind of sucks... Skeletor is basically the only good thing about it. So I'm not expecting much from a He-man show, as long as I'm not bored I'm cool with it. (Though it did annoy me how little of He-Man and Skeletor we got in part 1)

Also I love the new He-Man theme.

The old show is very dated. To people who complain about woke and identity politics, the old show was highly sanitized and constantly preaching moral messages. It was in syndicated so they made it as sanitized as possible so parents wouldn't come after them.

Exactly and I will add : so parents would buy the toys for their kids.

Well there were a lot of parents groups who were against that and not OK with shows being big toy commercials. So they tried to make it so the show was "good" and their kids were watching wholesome entertainment.

Then these parents were not very enlightened. Most big TV shows such as GI Joe, Transformers, He Man/She Ra etc were made to sell toys. There's always (most of the times) a show made to sell X new toys.
He Man TV show was always meant to advertise the toys, the toys came first and Mattel ordered a show to sell.

I'm aware of that man, and some parents and parents groups protested this. He-Man tried to present itself as a quality show for children with its strong moral messages to avoid getting hate from parents. I'm simply talking about why the show was written and formatted the way it was.

I still genuinely love the Filmation show. Sure there is some nostalgia to my love of the show but its more so I'm still entertained by it. Yes some stuff is super cheesy but there is also some really good stuff as well in my opinion. When I was 5 or so I realized that under the snake armor Teela looked like she does in the cartoon and after that the snake armor never went back on. Yes I know the figure and cartoon don't look exactly alike but to 5 year old me she was the same. A very cool moment in the Filmation show is in the episode Origin of the Sorceress you can see She Ra's Sword of Prtection for the first time. This shocked me because this episode aired on Sept. 26 1984.

I next want to watch The New Adventures of He Man I had the toys but I don't really remember watching the show.

So I just finished watching Part 1 (first 5 episodes).
What I liked:
+ Teela's new appearance and confident swagger (yes, I'm partial to female bodybuilders upload_2021-12-3_23-10-8.gif)
Ditto for Evil-Lyn (and apparently she gets even bigger in Part 2!).
+ I liked the story, to a degree: Teela and her friends trying to survive in an Eternia without He-Man and with all the magic gone. Sworn enemies Teela and Evil-Lyn forced to team up, along with Orko, Beast-Man, Roboto, and Man-At-Arms. And of course the Skeletor twist at the end.
+ Voice acting was great. Stand-outs were Mark Hamill as Skeletor and Lena Heady as Evil-Lyn. Nice to see the great Susan Eisenberg (Wonder Woman) return as the voice of the Sorceress.
+ Sound-track was great.
What I neither liked nor disliked:
+/= Animation was by the same studio that did the Castlevania series. It wasn't bad, I just felt the series would have better served by another studio. This studio does "fantasy-horror" (like Castlevania) brilliantly, but for straight up fantasy would have preferred another studio.
What I disliked:
- The story felt very flimsy. This post-He-Man version of Eternia was not sufficiently fleshed out. For example, Cyclops and Trapjaw and the weird cult they had put together. What was that all about? It wasn't properly explained. Who was the undead-sorceror that confronted Teela in the Land of the Dead? Was that Evil-Lyn's sorceror dad? Again not sufficiently explained. All in all, just not enough world building.

I'd give it a 6 out of 10. Not all bad, but judging from the internet's frenzied reaction, I was expecting a radical departure from the old story, but there was really nothing radical about it, other than Teela's eccentric new haircut and bulging muscles. Hoping Part 2 is a little more interesting.

I just finished Part 2, and I loved it! 8 out of 10 for me. A couple of twists and turns I wasn't expecting and found satisfying and entertaining.

The outrage on the internet over this series I find laughable. "He-Man" the original series was hardly high art, like say, the Lord of the Rings or even the original Star Wars trilogy. It was a kids cartoon, nothing more, a vehicle for selling toys, not unlike Transformers and GI Joe, two cartoons from the same era. That Kevin Smith decided to take a fresh approach with Revelation can hardly be considered "sacrilegious" or "blasphemous", because the original series just wasn't that good to begin with. In short, this was a dull series that was overdue for a make-over. Revelation may not have succeeded in every way, but I appreciate the bold and daring risks taken in making it.

To quote a certain abridged series, “Never in my life have I needed something so much and never known until I received it.”

Seeing that definitely gave me certain...feelings.

Is it getting hotter in here, or is it just me?

A fellow female bodybuilder fan like myself. When I saw the way they depicted Evil-Lyn in Episode 8 I flipped out! Not a knuckle-dragging brute, by the way, but an exquisitely shaped female bodybuilder -- so much care and attention to detail went into her creation!

Nice to know I'm not alone in appreciating beautiful female bodybuilders!

Aside from the visual appeal of seeing what is traditionally considered the “weaker” sex (total bs, considering I’m on the weaker side and could get stomped by most female athletes) in a physical position of strength, I appreciate that getting to be that physically fit, whether for health or fitness, takes a lot of time, patience and perseverance. It’s hard enough for us guys to do it, let alone women. You see a woman built like that, you know that wasn’t nothing. That’s sexy.

Nothing sexier than seeing the fruits of a strong, confident woman’s dedicated labor to get “swole”.

I personally find fit, strong, and buff women attractive, so I don't get the complaints about this Teela. I mean I find women of all shapes and sizes attractive, not just strong and buff. But when people say this about Teela as an insult, I don't get it. Plus, she's been a strong warrior since the 1980s.

Same!

Exactly. She's Captain of the Royal Guard at the Palace of Eternos, and she has to confront adversaries like Beastman, Merman and Trapjaw, all of whom ridiculously huge and musclebound. It would only make sense for her to be strong and fit too.

Seeing Evil-Lyn transformed into a Ms Olympia-sized bodybuilder was a bit of a surprise, however. But not an unpleasant one :)

Like the meme says, "I'm into that ****!"

So with the current discussion I figured it would be a good time to give my thoughts on a few characters.

Teela
I think the classic Teela redesign/update looks great and is a logical evolution of her classic design both original toy and Filmation look. I still think her Revelation redesign is generic and watching the show didn't change my opinion. And for those who may have missed my reason for this, I basically feel you could put MOTU: R Teela in any fantasy property and she is just going to blend in. And I also think classic and now Sorceress Teela would stand out and be a character you immediately wonder who is that. I think Sorceress Teela looks amazing and I love it. By the way Mattel should have announced the Sorceress figure like last week. You can also add me to the Teela being muscular being a non issue camp. I think it makes complete sense that the Captain of the Guards being more muscular.

Evil Lyn
So please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think they changed Evil Lyn's classic look which I'm fine with as I've always loved her classic look. I also really like her Revelation redesign. The one thing that it does make me wonder is why cut Teela hair but give EL long hair when to the best of my knowledge she's always been depicted with short hair. Don't get me wrong I like the long hair look and plan to buy at least one more EL figure to display with long hair. Sorceress Evil Lyn is also amazing maybe not as amazing as Sorceress Teela but amazing none the less. I also think powered up Sorceress Evil Lyn looks great as well. I say great instead of amazing because I'm not a big fan of the thing around her head and her hair. Evil Lyn's hair being short isn't my issue but rather the fact that I think this is the first time we've seen a major change is a person's hair after transformation. Even if we just look at what we see with Adam in Revelation his hair doesn't go from long to short it stays about the same length. And on top of that her hair feels like a continuity error because it goes from long to powered up and short to powered down and short then back to long with little passage of time. I also have no issues with powered up EL being as muscular as she is as I'm also a fan of female bodybuilding. Also come on Mattel where are the Sorceress and powered up EL figure announcements.

Man at Arms
This is probably the first time I've ever wanted more Man at Arms. The only thing I question about MAA is why make his first figure his classic look and not his part 2 look? I mean it doesn't spoil anything major like Teela and Evil Lyn figures would.

Moss Man
When I first saw his figure my first thought was, that reminds me of Swap Thing. Then I watched the show and was like yep Moss Man comes off too much like a Swamp Thing rip off. I'm not up on my MM lore but if that is how he's always been portrayed when use him?

Savage He-Man
This I'm not sure about as the mini comic version was not a Hulk smash rage monster but it kinda makes sense in the story. Which brings me to the how did he do that is never explained. You have Adam change without the sword and imply there is something going on the bad guys don't know but then the story just falls by the way side. And my biggest complaint is the needless killing of the Manticore. We already know he is a rage monster and I just feel this was a needless dark/edgy moment that doesn't add anything to the story.

One last thing is I wasn't a fan of Beast Man being turned into powered up Evil Lyn's dog like mount. If she would have turn him into something closer to a werewolf I wouldn't have much of a issue.

Sorry for responding to this late, I missed this part. The outrage over the show was totally overblown and it was an over-reaction that was stoked and provoked by reactionary anti-woke, anti-SJW YouTubers who like to provoke outrage in fans that Hollywood is trying to ruin their favorite shows or characters with "identity politics, feminism, wokeness," blah blah blah. I've not forgotten one of the original talking points from Clownfish TV, who spearheaded a lot of this anger claimed "Teela has a girlfriend!" As in Teela is a lesbian now. So people see Andra and think she's going to be Teela's gay lover. The show didn't even hint or imply that. I mean Andra could be LGBTQ, not sure. But they didn't even hint at a romance with Teela. And it was dishonest for Clownfish to claim that.

But let's say for example if the show were to continue and say Andra were to have a female lover, I don't see what's wrong with that.

I love the He-Man mythology and universe, but I'm not blind to what it is. The original show was a product of its time and it was primarily made to sell toys as you said and teach kids good moral messages. I'm more interested in the general mythology, dynamics, characters of the world rather than the original cartoon. I mean I collect the toys as well, but I like that Masters of the Universe was this new fantasy toyline that was built from the ground up with its own lore.

So rather than make a Conan the Barbarian toyline, Mattel made its own sword and sorcery fantasy thing that was toys first, but they backed up with a whole lore and mythology to go along with it. And that to me is cooler than all this whining about "But He-Man isn't onscreen enough, waaaah!"

I don't think the show is flawless. I do think some subplots could've been fleshed out and rounded out, but I did like that this was a more natural take on the fantasy world. People can get stabbed, hurt, and die. I liked the higher stakes in Revelation

I thought Evil Lyn looked fabulous in her new costume and wouldn't mind if she always looked this way even if she isn't a villain. It was a sexy look. Hope they'll make an action figure of her in this. Also liked the costume she wore right at the very end.

It looks like she always had white hair even as a child, and so do her parents. Before I used to wonder if they were suggesting she's older with white hair, but maybe she's the same age as Teela.

Wish they used the likes of Ram Man, Stratos and Buzz Off more. The latter two were mere cameos and were just the whole race, not specifically the characters.

Wouldn't mind if Teela had wielded the power too. Then she could've had this Battleground Teela look from the early mini comics and MOTU Classics line:

Most of the haters out there disliked the show based soley on Teela's haircut and muscular arms! That's it! They pretty much gave up on the show after that. You can tell that most of the people who post the critical youtube videos haven't even watched the show in its entirety. Its just sad.

As TheVileOne mentioned, the show wasn't perfect, (one thing I found annoying, for example, was the constant "sentimental moments" between Man-at-Arms and Teela, Teela and the Sorceress, Adam and King Randor and so on -- there's no crying in Master of the Universe!) but from an entertainment standpoint I thought it was a undeniable success.

(and "Ms Shoulders" Evil-Lynn was a definite bonus!).

I was hoping when Skeletor got assimilated at the end that he might look like the 87 movie Skeletor. He was dressed all in black and could potentially have had more cybernetic parts under that outfit.

Also when Teela became the Sorceress, I wish she could've had that brown snake armour like the original toy had which doubled as the Sorceress.

That'd be an interesting idea.

What are the chances that when Evil Lyn went into the forest at the end and dropped her orb that she went there to train and put on muscles? Maybe she would return built like she was when she was Dark Lyn, but just built that way naturally. She could now be more of a physical warrior when next called upon instead of a magic user.

Which honestly just made Teela even more attractive to me. Plus Teela getting bigger arms and the new look was a result of her leaving the Eternian Royal Guard and becoming a mercenary. And Eternia was becoming a dismal place. It was her post-apocalyptic timeskip look. It's for the sake of a story. Rejecting a show over that is so dumb and superficial.
