Henry Golding in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

I hope that Storm Shadow eventually sports a look that’s similar to his comic book one even if it’s only at the end. Snake Eyes’s costume looks pretty good overall (even if he rarely wears the mask) but Storm Shadow needs more than just a white jacket to look like his animated counterpart.

Agreed. I was never a fan of Storm Shadow's outfit (long trench-coat with white pants & plain tennis shoes).

I'd prefer more of a classic Ninja look or something close to the animated/comic book counterparts.

Oh wait Robert Shwentke directed this? The guy that made R.I.P.D. and tanked the Divergent series? Suddenly I have a lot less hope...

Schwentke has done some terrific work in Germany (His 2017 WWII film „The Captain“ was particularly good), but in Hollywood he seems to be more of the typical journeyman director brought in for generic action films.

According to an interview the Reel Rejects did with Henry Golding, the sword fight choreographer for the live action Rurouni Kenshin films did the choreography for this film.

After the last two GI Joe movies my expectations aren't super high. I still think this could be a semi-decent action movie.

If anything, the casting has definitely come leaps and bounds from Rise of Cobra. ''Who shall we get for Cobra Commander? Oh I know, that kid from 3rd Rock!'' Then they end up making him look like Keanu Reeves in a bad Steampunk cosplay.

The first one is objectively horrible but I will stop to watch it if it’s on because it’s like slowing down for a car wreck

Channing looks confused half the movie.
Black suits?
Random Brendan Fraser cameo and he doesn’t show up for the final battle
Fake Cobra Commander with scuba mask
Baroness who sounds like a teenager
Nanites solve everything

Well apparently people have figured out who's directing this......and it's the same idiot who directed RIPD.

BE VERY AFRAID.

Yeah it’s 100% garbage. I’m iffy on whether this Snake Eyes movie will be good but it wouldn’t be hard to be better than that trash. Retaliation was an improvement but it was still crappy. I’m glad this film at least seems to be ignoring those movies (although Storm Shadow’s white jacket might be an indication that they aren’t).

Eh, I agree that Rise of Cobra is garbage but I'll take fun garbage over boring garbage which is what Retaliation is.

I mean, Stephen Sommers be Stephen Sommers, and he's a kid playing with action figures as was so accurately said earlier. But that's pretty much the 80s G.I. Joe cartoon. So he delivers on that in spades.

Retaliation is just a snooze with zero creativity (at the very least they kill Channing Tatum in the opening lol). Maybe if John M. Chu brought the color and fun of Crazy Rich Asians, instead he dours it the same way he doured the Jem and the Holograms movie.

Unfortunately Snake Eyes looks closer to Retaliation. Zzzzz.

Anyway, I'll stop defending fun garbage vs boring garbage.

LOL I had no idea that the guy who made Crazy Rich Asians also did Retaliation and that Jem movie. Yeah his history as a director is spotty at best.

I can understand the argument that fun, over-the-top garbage is better than boring garbage. For example, I would watch MK Annihilation or Street Fighter again before I would watch MK 2021 or Legend of Chun-Li because at least the former films I could laugh at. In the case of GI Joe though... maybe it’s just because I know that Sommers was once capable of making a better film (I still love the first two Mummy movies) that Rise of Cobra is just unwatchable to me. I don’t know. Maybe if I watched it now I could laugh at it but at the time it came out, I just remember being pissed off at how bad it was. Retaliation sucked too but I didn’t adamantly hate it as much.

Hey I think Joseph Gordon Levitt is a good actor. I just didn't think they thought out his performance and execution as Cobra Commander. Plus, Levitt hated the role anyway.

That movie was pretty awful, but the extended chase through Paris is a better executed action sequence than most we get these days. It's a low bar I guess, but a clear objective, good sense of geography, and every character having a purpose makes for a fun scene.

God I haven't seen Rise of Cobra in forever, but I do kind of remember having some fun with the action sequences in it atleast more so than Retaliation which seemed low budget to me in comparison.

It also felt like they didn't do much with either The Rock or Bruce Willis in that movie, especially Willis who they pretty much showed all of his scenes in the trailers.

I think its fair to say that we deserve better than either of those movies honestly which is why I had higher hopes for this movie, but who really knows now since Paramount doesn't seem to have much faith in it anyways.

If we can get quality superhero movies there's no reason why we can't get a pretty damn good or great G.I. Joe movie these days, but Paramount needs to put some serious effort into it.

One thing I hated about Retaliation is that London gets completely obliterated and there's next to no reaction over it. And they pretty much let it happen.

There shouldn't be celebrating or medals being given out at the end when London got wiped off the map.
