Henry Golding in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

He’s pretty good in Crazy Rich Asians and great in The Gentlemen and A Simple Favor. But he needs good material. Not sure if he’s one of those actors who can elevate a bad script.

The script and direction here did him no favors. Same with Andrew Koji. When he got mad, he looked like a pouting kid throwing a temper tantrum. It didn't look natural. And I know Andrew Koji is capable of better from Warrior.

I never thought about Golding for Bond, but I did think he could make a good Reed Richards

I'm not so sure, he couldn't maintain a flat accent here at all. It was clearly something new and uncomfortable for him. In some scenes its passable, in others it's clearly starting to fail him.

How shaky cam still exists in 2021 is beggars belief.

Looks like I will be waiting for season 3 of Warrior to see proper fight scenes again.

Just for example in First Man, I recall a scene where it's like just two dudes casually walking and chatting outside and it was shaky cam and I just don't get it. It didn't feel natural or cinematic at all. It didn't make it feel more real or anything.

I think the thing about frenetic handheld camera work, there are ways to use it and make it look good to add to the frenetic pacing and style. This movie didn't do it.

He’s tall and good looking but I don’t think he has the gravitas for a leading man role.

Honestly from the trailers I feel like I’m not gonna buy him in the role at all. I like to reserve full judgment until the actual film but his action faces in the trailer make me laugh.

Been asking people who seen the movie to spoil if he ends up disfigured and mute by films end. The silence isn't welcoming.

I don't know what irritates me more, the inevitability of the film being a misfire because Paramount is seemingly run by dopes with no IP respect, or the critics throwing shade on the fandom for us pointing out this isn't the Snake-eyes film GI Joe fans wanted.

Lorenzo DiBonaventura already spoiled this in an interview.

Is it about the character actually being mute and fugly by the end? That's a make/ break point for me.

Snake Eyes Trailer Breakdown With Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura – Exclusive

"Snake’s injury and his speech issue would be in the next movie, if we're lucky enough to make it," di Bonaventura explains. "But to make a movie with Snake Eyes in it and not have him in the costume? We would’ve gotten killed by the fans! The question was, how to have the most fun with it. This was the exploration of the human, not the guy in the suit, in a sense, so we hold back the suit until he’s earned it as a character.

Please fire this man from GI Joe and Transformers.

the only interview I see them talking about it, they are intentionally vague. TBH, I don't have much faith at this point, given what I just read about how he "gets" his code name, and they screw up a GI Joe origin thing in regards to Snake-eyes family in regards to Cobra.

Edit: Seen that quote, WTF... Hey, now I can fully blast this In name Only garbage.

I can't believe they shot this in Japan, and they did that thing with Storm Shadows code name, and nobody Japanese told the Americans that the name is already there.

"That lady said i have stormy and shadowy eyes. So I should probably call myself...STORM SHADOW!"

Also, FYI, the trailers spoil A LOT of the movie.

I just had someone else confirm we see the last shot of the film, is in the trailers. Showing a pretty, talking star. Ugh... so angry.

The code names stuff is honestly embarrassing between Snake-eyes and Storm Shadow. as stated, they did shoot this in Japan, around people who speak Japanese...

Also, I hope Paramount gave GI Joe creator Larry Hama a sizeable bonus for destroying his trust with fans, endorsing this garbage.

I don't blame Larry Hama. What is the dude supposed to do? Even Bob Kane publicly endorsed Batman & Robin. Akira Toriyama endorsed Dragon Ball Evolution.

Also, the existence of Dragon Ball Evolution is actually what got Toriyama to start doing more Dragon Ball again, and the stories we've gotten since then have been pretty good.

They rolled out the red carpet for Hama and brought him onset, and it looks like they treated him nice.

To me it's like James Cameron "endorsing" all the ****ty Terminator sequels. He's doing it to be nice. I'm not going to hold it against Hama. He's the guy who gave us the modern, contemporary versions of these characters.

Sure he could do the Alan Moore thing and disown everyone, but Hama isn't that type of guy. He's a nice guy.

Sucks to hear that this is indeed another misfire for the franchise, but I really do think Golding is a talented dude beyond his good looks atleast in the stuff I've seen him in.

I'm honestly more disappointed to hear the injustice they have committed with my boy Andrew Koji who I was hoping would breakout after this, but it doesnt sound like it all.

Now, I don't even want to know how much they screw over the rest of the cast in this movie like Samara Weaving and Iko Uwais who I was also really looking forward too in this, but not anymore.

Iko Uwais actually shows more charisma in his limited screentime than Henry Golding.

Samara Weaving doesn't leave much of an impression. She's only in this movie as sequel bait.

This movie is like all the bad tropes of films that try to set up failed cinematic universes and future movies but fails to do so.

Always worried about the setup for sequels and not the actual movie we're watching now.

No, I can blame him. The comic book Snake-eyes was clearly his baby (and IMO his biggest retaining work he's done), and seeing him take part in the promotion of this INO flick just is sad. I hate it when creators sell out to sell a crappy adoption to their fans. Always been my beef with guys like John Carpenter, Jim Cameron, Stephen King, etc.

Meh it is what it is. Hama played nice with them because they probably treated him nice. It's better not to burn bridges in business.

Secondly, none of these movies ruin the actual good stories and comics he created.

To hold that against people, IMO it's not a good way to live life. It's just petty.

Thirdly, MurkeNyou, Hama has next to no control over any of this. Hama can't exactly go on set and tell Lorenzo DiBonaventura Robert Schwentke what to do. Hama is a hired gun and he always has been. He has no creative control over this. He can't call any shots.

Hama has no ownership of these characters at all. The characters belong to Hasbro at the end of the day.

Oh I know he has no 'control" over production, just disappointing even the creator can't even get his work adopted properly, still promotes it to fans like myself that have had issues with this film with almost everything they shown. The only thing the previous films in this franchise got close to right was Snake-eyes. Then because Henry Golding wants to play a Ninja, they change everything ven more to suit him.

The dice thing is beyond stupid, and not even the reference to this character even being called "snake-eyes".

Hey maybe Hama actually likes it for all I know. Either way, I'm not going to hold this against him. It's Hollywood politics at the end of the day. Hama is just playing along and being the nice, affable gentleman he always has been.

I saw it. I thought it was awful. It's the GI Joe equivalent of The Legend of Chun-Li.

Awful script, dialogue, editing fight choreography and direction. This is not how you shoot elite ninjas who are so highly trained their abilities look superhuman.

Direction and writing put this a couple steps above those schlocky action movies you see in your recommendations queue on Netflix and Prime Video. Except there's no wacky Nicholas Cage performance to marvel at like that Jiujitsu film.

To give an example at the film's awful dialogue, at one point another character tells Storm Shadow, "That look in your eye...like a shadow before the storm!"

His name is Tommy Arashikage. His clan's name is Arashikage. Arashikage is literally translated into English as STORM SHADOW. Good god...

Wait until you see how Snake Eyes gets his codename. If you didn't like how Han Solo got his last name...oh boy...

Yikes!
