This is for heroes whose portrayals you liked-not ones you like in general but came across badly in your eyes-in films whose stories may not have grabbed you. Mine include:
Christopher Reeve in Superman III & IV
Michael Keaton in Batman Returns
Jennifer Garner in Elektra
Vincent Perez in "The Crow: City of Angels"

i'm not sure if it's possible to like a leading man who a story is based around and not the story itself...

but that's just me...

i guess the closest answer for me would be maximus in gladiator.

Sure it is; the actor brought his/her "A"-game to a substandard script. happens all the time.

Qui Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace
Blade in Blade Trinity

Billy Zane in The Phantom. Actually, I did like the movie, but only because of his performance.

George Clooney in Batman and Robin. I think he did the best that he could under the circumstances. He was like the closest thing to a normal person in that universe. His Batman seemed really uncomfortable, even slightly embarassed. Probably how the real Batman would act if he woke up one day in Bizarro World.

Y'know, almost every still photo I saw of Clooney in that costume shows him smirking. Like he knows he looks ridiculous.

brandon routh in superman returns. Awful, meandering and pointless movie, but with a decent superman.

And I'll also add Billy Zane. Of course it wouldn't be the first or last time he was good in a movie that wasn't.
