Yeah it's a fascinating remake this one. The original hasn't agreed very well but the concept alone has so many interesting possibilities.
Highlander is an enigma for sure. The original has become something of a cult icon, but it’s a very flawed film and certainly wasn’t a critically loved film even when new. Some of the dialogue was very cheesy, there are plotholes, questionable casting choices when it came to accents, and it has a few pacing issues. But what makes it work, for me anyway, is the overall concept and the charisma and ability of the 3 main immortals actors, Connery, Clancy & Lambert. I liked how the film wasn’t shy in showing that being immortal isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, especially when you outlive your loved ones. And the exploration of some different time eras. Those are things which a modern reboot could really delve into in more detail. There’s also the memorable soundtrack from Queen, which really lifted the whole tone of the film.
The sequels were awful to the point that I’ve only rewatched them once and have no desire to do so again. Even the whole concept of a sequel goes against the fundamental hook of the first film, that there can be only one immortal left standing at the end.
I liked the TV series, though rewatching it in recent times really hammers home the limited budget they had. We are a bit spoilt with production quality on modern shows.
Yeah for a guy who wants to do big, high-profile action movies, Cavill hasn’t had many hits. I liked Ungentlemanly Warfare but that thing flopped so hard that it was on-demand like a week after it premiered in theaters. And Argylle was absolute garbage (not his fault but whatever star power he may have didn’t sell tickets). Maybe Voltron will fare better.
I feel like this is the heart of the problem for him. He doesn’t seem to get that sort of action star doesn’t exist anymore. Like you can’t just do action over and over and over. The cost of a movie ticket is not worth seeing you do that same **** you did in your last seven projects. Audiences get bored of that very quickly now. Keanu gets that. The Rock seems to have realized that. Even Tom Cruise does other stuff.
That said, this is Stahelski. That’s the real selling point right now.
No one would fight him because The Kurgan ordered it so he could behead Connor himself.Haha yeah there are some really awkward scenes in the first movie, like that part at the beginning in old Scotland where Connor is walking around on the battlefield yelling, “NO ONE WILL FIGHT ME!” I mean, I’ve never been in a medieval war. But something tells me that people on the opposite side won’t just not hack your head off because they don’t think you’re worthy lol.
Referring back to what was said about ensembles, one of the things that really helped and made the original so successful was the fact that you had all of these other great actors, like Clancy Brown and Sean Connery, surrounding Christopher Lambert to make up for him not being a huge draw, at least at the time. Whenever people bring up that film, most of the time they usually always first mention either the Kurgan and Ramirez and MacLeod second. It’s not that Lambert isn’t a great performer, it’s just that the other actors have more star power behind them and stand out more.I feel like this is the heart of the problem for him. I just cannot get hyped for Highlander, lol! This franchise has 1 good movie, 1 okayish by 90s standards network show, and lots of garbage. I just cannot see this doing well, and we need to let some of these IPs go

I dont think it's a sacred movie you can't remake. I just don't see this doing well. This feels like one of those times the suits think to themselves "I remember that movie, and I love it! It's a big cult movie, so if we do it again but give it more money, it will be huge!" And it will end like most of these do cause the appeal is too niche. I loved Blade Runner 2049, but that's an example of this same mentality.Even as a fan of the original, I concede your point here is spot on. Hollywood has an increasingly well recognised problem with lack of fresh ideas and creativity, which means we get more reboots, reimaginings and so on that ever before. Not to mention increasing reliance on long running franchises.
With that said, the Highlander concept is very interesting and there were things about the original film which could be improved. So maybe a new version will do that. I never viewed it as some sacred original (like Back to the Future, or The Matrix) which should never be remade.

I'd never complain about Blade Runner 2049 existing. Don't care if it underperformed.I dont think it's a sacred movie you can't remake. I just don't see this doing well. I am not complaining it exists, I love Blade Runner 2049. I think it's great a studio invested money into a movie I could have told them would flop. But that doesn't mean I think remaking Highlander or a Rambo prequel are wise financial investments.I'd never complain about Blade Runner 2049 existing. Don't care if it underperformed.
It's not my money. Or yours.I am not complaining it exists, I love Blade Runner 2049. I think it's great a studio invested money into a movie I could have told them would flop. But that doesn't mean I think remaking Highlander or a Rambo prequel are wise financial investments.
That's all fine and good, but I can still have my opinion about how they're spending that money and voice said opinion as I pleaseIt's not my money. Or yours.
Not like it mattersThat's all fine and good, but I can still have my opinion about how they're spending that money and voice said opinion as I please
That same thing can be said for every post on this forum and 99.9% of the internet. Not going to stop me from voicing my opinionNot like it matters
NO.
That's not a point I concede anymore.
There have been too many (potentially) crowd pleasing movies that weren't sequels / prequels / remakes / reboots of already established movie franchises that were completely let down by audiences, which would then turn the very next sequel / prequel / remake / reboot into a huge box office smash.
Hollywood is a business. They can only do so much if audiences keep ignoring original movies for the most part.
There are plenty of original things coming out in the coming years. Maybe let's actually see those in theaters, instead of bemoaning the alleged "lack of fresh ideas and creativity"."

Love Crowe as oddly enough, the "Spaniard", yet I hope he's not Ramirez, when they have Bardem out there.
