Fantasy Highlander Remake

I mean, it was a pretty sizable and important role in the original. But she was a part of the main character's story. Not everything is going to be a starring role. Also, I don't think she's the main love interest of the film. Pretty sure it's Marisa Abela, who was cast before Gillan.

I don't want Heather to be an immortal because then what point does it serve? It's like giving the Shelly character a larger role in The Crow remake. Did it really serve or benefit the story? Beforehand, everyone claimed they were "fixing" the Shelly character. They did no such thing.

The whole reason this movie is getting made is that the original is an enduring classic, almost 40 years later. Did anyone complain about Heather's role in the original? What is the goal here? A new Highlander film franchise? Do we really need a franchise? None of the other sequels were particularly good.

Yeah, I don't have any interest in seeing Heather portrayed as an immortal. I just like the idea of Karen Gillan in a more physically demanding or proactive role.

That's not what this role is or what it was originally written as. Also, Gillan has done those types of roles before. And she's probably doing another Jumanji movie.

Remakes change things, they might do with Heather. It could just be an expanded role or a new twist on the character. Casting Gillan indicates something like that, so we'll see.

FYI, someone else made that suggestion about Heather. I don't disagree with you on this. I'm pretty familiar w/ the lore.

So what? She's played love interests in several films and television shows before as well.

It is what it is. I don't feel that strongly about it one way or the other. It's just a modest preference on my part.

Truthfully, I'm not keen on a Highlander remake, and I feel like it's a bad idea. My main interest in it is because Cavill is starring in it and Chad Stahelski is directing it.

I feel like it should at least be better shot and more action-packed than The Crow remake, which was one of the worst movies of the year.

I like the concept behind Highlander, but at the same time, I don't really have any interest in seeing a remake that closely follows the original. Connor, in particular, has never been particularly interesting to me. Duncan, having benefited from the long-form storytelling structure of an ongoing series, is more well-rounded and just a better character in general.

Cavill's involvement with the film is the aspect of it that I'm least interested in, so we won't agree on this one. Aside from the IP, Stahelski and the other cast members are the main draw for me.

My main interest in this is that Chad Stahelski's directing this.

I believe he can do something pretty great with the material.

And I also have a good feeling about Henry Cavill in this role.

He's pretty good at being the stoic man who feels the weight of the world (or in this case, immortality) on his shoulders.

Also, the supporting cast's pretty lit: Crowe, Abela, Bautista and Gillan.

Yeah I’m kinda meh on this to be honest. I’ve never found Highlander’s lore all that compelling. The original movie is fine but I watched it once and never felt the need to revisit it. I watched the TV show in the 90s from time to time but only because it was one of those dumb, syndicated shows that was always on and the TV was never off in my house growing up. But I never found Duncan interesting (or Connor for that matter). I don’t think I ever watched any of the awful sequels.

As for this, Cavill’s career trajectory is getting a bit sad to watch at this point. I know he wants to do movies but how is this all that different from The Witcher? He’s just going to be another angsty guy swinging a sword around. So if I want to watch that, I’ll just rewatch him as Geralt. It’s a shame Ungentlemanly Warfare was such a flop. He was actually a lot of fun in that and I’d like to see him in more roles where he loosens up a bit.

As for Stehlinski… I’m so bored with John Wick movies at this point but I guess it’s good that he’s doing something different. Hopefully this turns out better than the last two Wick films, which I just found insufferable. Of the two OG Wick directors, David Leitch has proven to me that he’s the better of the two, easily. Atomic Blonde kicked the living **** out of any Wick movie, Deadpool 2 was pretty good, The Fall Guy was an absolute action/romcom blast, and Bullet Train was so much fun. Yeah, Hobbs & Shaw sucked but you can’t win them all. I always look forward to what he’s doing next. Hopefully Stehlinski can do something interesting here but it’s a tall order. Bautista and Gillen should be good though.

I've no issues with a remake of it. Highlander is a film that had fairly mixed reviews on release, then spawned some God-awful sequels, some spin-offs and (admittedly) a decent TV series. I don't see it as some untouchable feature like Back to The Future, which should never be remade.

One perspective is that the Highlander concept has a ton of potential but it was squandered in those original sequels, so I'm curious to see what route they go with this one. It has the same characters but I don't know if it will retread the same path as the original film or add some concepts of its own to flesh it out. The best comparison I can think of is Superman 1978 and Man Of Steel - both explore the same fundamental plot of Krypton exploding, Kal-El being sent to Earth by his parents, etc - but MOS takes a very different aesthetic approach and adds in all the lore about Kryptonian society, selective breeding and genetic manipulation, and so on.

Yeah I mean I feel like it’s a property they can easily expand upon or improve. I just don’t honestly know if there is enough there to build upon to make something really great and/or if this creative team is the right one to do but I guess we’ll see.

Since the original film ended so conclusively, with Connor becoming the last immortal and winning "The Prize," I think Panzer had little choice but to retcon the story moving forward. That said, reimagining the immortals as exiled aliens from the planet Zeist was probably not the most effective way to do that. :o :funny:

I also maintain that the series did a much better job of expanding the mythos by shifting the focus from Connor to Duncan and introducing several new and interesting characters such as Darius, Amanda, and the Watchers. In spite of its shortcomings, it was pretty cool for its time.

Once again, the traps of franchises. Not everything needs to be a franchise or have sequels. It forces bad storytelling and bad writing.

Look at Joker 2. It should've just been a standalone one-off. Forcing a sequel was a disaster.

Yeah so many franchises out there never should have been franchises, or at least didn’t need to become franchises with multiple sequels. Take Terminator for example. Everything wraps up so neatly in T2. There is nowhere else the story should go at that point. They stopped Judgment Day in pretty much every conceivable way. And yet in every movie it somehow happens again. It’s just painful to watch. All because the studios see dollar signs.

I tried to watch GladiaTwo on a plane and stopped after 20 minutes. To be fair, I should probably at least try and watch it on a regular sized screen. But it just felt so unnecessary.
