Nice gesture, but it will never pass in the Senate. Even if it does, President Bush will veto. There in not enough of a majority for an override.
isn't there a thread about this?
I think this is good...but with the wage going up (in three parts over a 26 month time frame)...you know the businesses will have to increase their prices a little bit. Maybe...

He can't stop this now that democrats have some power.
Bush can veto it, but the Senate can go ahead anyways.
We haven't raised it in about a decade.![]()

We'll if it is vetoed, it takes a 2/3 majority to pass it. I just don't think it will pass with a 2/3 majority.

Bad News: To override a Presidential veto, a 2/3 majority is required in the Senate. Something the Democrats do not have.
Good News: Bush has stated some time ago that he is willing to sign the minimum wage bill that the Democrats would most likely push on account that he knows that in order to get things done, he will need to work with them instead of pushing them aside like he has in the past.
Personal Opinion: Having Congress raise the minimum wage is rather pointless on account that at the state level, most states have already raised the minimum wage above the federal level. Minimum wage and abortion rights were huge winners in 2006 (unlike gay marriage which took further blows)
Are you on crack? NO Democrat is going to vote against this, they have the majority. Also I'm pretty sure some Republicans will vote for it. If the Republicans are seen stifling a minimum wage increase after over a decade without an increase, it will only further hamper their efforts to regain the majority.
This still isn't great, but its a start. Personally I think it should be a scaled system, a living wage, based on different factors. There should be a higher minimum wage for someone who works full-time and has kids than some high school kid working part time and living at home.
I personally don't think states should get to make that big of decisions but that's a whole other thread.
I feel the same way Kritish.
State's rights in today's world are often code for "here in Alabama we want to vote in something unconstitutional and you yankees ain't gonna tell us otherwise".![]()
I am not on crack. I am a realist. The Democratic majority in the Senate was 51-49 (That is assuming the 2 Independant senators vote with the Democrats) George W.Bush has made no indication he will sign this into law. My gut feeling is he will veto this. Which in the senate for an override The Democrats will have to convince 16 Republicans to jump party lines. Could it happen...maybe. If those 16 are up for reelection in '08. Do not mistake this for my personal beliefs. I want the minimun wage increased. Will it happen, not sure.
Well said, you can't have a strong country if you're devided either.
Bush has said that he is willing to sign a bill dealing with an increase on the minimum wage as long as it provided releif to small businesses which will struggle to pay for this. He said that the day that the Democrats won control of Congress.
Currently this bill lacks that releif and it is why he opposes to this version of the bill.
Chances are that it will get amended a little bit to provide such releif and Bush will sign it.
He has to. Failing to do so will only make matters worse.
