Thanks Dems, maybe people can learn that there's a difference between minimum and poverty.:whatever:

The small businesses can find ways to come up with the money.

Minimum wage just went up where I live(Pennsylvania) to 6.15. Then in July, it goes up to 7.25.:yay:

Nice gesture, but it will never pass in the Senate. Even if it does, President Bush will veto. There in not enough of a majority for an override.

Bush can veto it, but the Senate can go ahead anyways.

We haven't raised it in about a decade.:whatever:

 isn't there a thread about this?

I think this is good...but with the wage going up (in three parts over a 26 month time frame)...you know the businesses will have to increase their prices a little bit. Maybe...

It probably will be hard to notice; it isn't that much of a difference.

He can't stop this now that democrats have some power.

We'll if it is vetoed, it takes a 2/3 majority to pass it. I just don't think it will pass with a 2/3 majority.

Are you on crack? NO Democrat is going to vote against this, they have the majority. Also I'm pretty sure some Republicans will vote for it. If the Republicans are seen stifling a minimum wage increase after over a decade without an increase, it will only further hamper their efforts to regain the majority.

This still isn't great, but its a start. Personally I think it should be a scaled system, a living wage, based on different factors. There should be a higher minimum wage for someone who works full-time and has kids than some high school kid working part time and living at home.

The Democrats Do not have the 2/3 majority needed for an override in either House of Congress. I would like to see it raised, but it may not happen 'til '08.

I think it could pass, even some of the Republicans were for it.
It's a bad sign when even the Republicans are ready for change.

Bad News: To override a Presidential veto, a 2/3 majority is required in the Senate. Something the Democrats do not have.

Good News: Bush has stated some time ago that he is willing to sign the minimum wage bill that the Democrats would most likely push on account that he knows that in order to get things done, he will need to work with them instead of pushing them aside like he has in the past.

Personal Opinion: Having Congress raise the minimum wage is rather pointless on account that at the state level, most states have already raised the minimum wage above the federal level. Minimum wage and abortion rights were huge winners in 2006 (unlike gay marriage which took further blows). Also, there is no solution to this issue. Sure Wal-Mart and other huge corporations can afford this, but what about the small businesses which make up the bulk of businesses in the United States and most are teetering on the brink of success and failure. On the other hand, we can't just have people living with such a pathetic wage.

Let the Senate Republicans go ahead and do that, its just shooting themselves in the foot. They aren't just going to lay down for the Dems on everything however certain issues they're going to get massacred if they stand in the way of things, such as the minimum wage increase or Congressional ethics reform.

I personally don't think states should get to make that big of decisions but that's a whole other thread.

I feel the same way Kritish.

State's rights in today's world are often code for "here in Alabama we want to vote in something unconstitutional and you yankees ain't gonna tell us otherwise".

I am not on crack. I am a realist. The Democratic majority in the Senate was 51-49 (That is assuming the 2 Independant senators vote with the Democrats) George W.Bush has made no indication he will sign this into law. My gut feeling is he will veto this. Which in the senate for an override The Democrats will have to convince 16 Republicans to jump party lines. Could it happen...maybe. If those 16 are up for reelection in '08. Do not mistake this for my personal beliefs. I want the minimun wage increased. Will it happen, not sure.

I mean do you notice how the Conservative movement truely latched onto the states' rights issue after the Civil rights movement? I've always thought it had a racist subtext.

It's not about states-rights, it's about this being completely pointless. The majority of states have already passed legislation and propositions to raise the minimum wage and that number will continue to grow.

I'd rather see the new Congress deal with more important issues such as ethics reform, the situation in Iraq, implimenting the recomendations of the 9-11 Commission, and prove to me that they will be more than simply the Anti-Bush Bloc.

Well said, you can't have a strong country if you're devided either.

Bush has said that he is willing to sign a bill dealing with an increase on the minimum wage as long as it provided releif to small businesses which will struggle to pay for this. He said that the day that the Democrats won control of Congress.

Currently this bill lacks that releif and it is why he opposes to this version of the bill.

Chances are that it will get amended a little bit to provide such releif and Bush will sign it.

I don't see it that way. While I do beleive that the federal government should have a lot more power than the state governments and should even take over a few state functions such as education; the state governments prevent the power and size of the federal government from getting too big.

He has to. Failing to do so will only make matters worse.

It's not like Bush will get any less popular if he doesn't. He really doesn't have anything to lose if he doesn't pass this bill because he has nothing to lose in the first place.

If the Democrats seriously want this bill to pass. They will compromise with Bush like he has been willing to do so since November and add in the relief to small businesses.
