Superman Returns How about Alex Ross?

Uh, I live out in the country. None of the "farm boys" I know look like that. Generally they're bigger, but they don't have what looks like man boobs.

Neither do Ross' Superman illustrations.

I do believe he was talking about BATMAN BEGINS, not Returns.

Ah, crap! You are right. I meant BEGINS, I typed RETURNS. D'oh.

LOL...though I love his Superman suit (even with the enormously huge \S/)... I dislike the muscular looking Superman he draws so even if he did say something I'd be apt to dismiss him on that anyway.
uh, what are you talking about?... compared to other artists, he probably the only one that doesn't make him look like a body builder...

Nerial,
Im not so sure being older and wiser doesnt pay today.I mean look at the animated Batman , he's a more mature looking , hulking man, but hes not less popular because of it. We are so used to having young pretty people jammed down our throats, maybe it is time to revert back. That way the pretty ones will look even prettier;)

Animation can have such a wide range, however. In JL Season 1, they put these lines on Superman's face (which looked terrible--they made him look harsh instead of just a little older), and then got rid of them by the second season.

I'm not putting off older by any means--look at Harrison Ford. The man was labeled "Sexiest Man" in 96', and he was 53. That's impressive, and as a female, the 'distinguished look' has many appeals.

I'm just saying the trend these days is to be young or you're not as important. I think it's silly, but it's the trend.

So true!

the only things I dont like that he does is make Superman look like he's in his 50's...

and that enormous symbol...

I think he's refering to this picture, even Alex Ross doesn't like this painting he did! Al the other Alex Ross's paintings Superman has no man boobs, it was just this one. :p

Nice picture, but those aren't "manboobs" they're pectoral muscles under a shirt. That's what they would really look like rather than the "painted on" shirts etc. we usually see in comics.

They still look like manboobs.

Are you stuck to Ross's ass or something?

Here we go...that the best you got? What a great comment.Be proud of yourself.

Takes one silly 18 year old to ruin a great discussion.

Look, sorry, that was rude and immature. But they do look like manboobs.

Apology accepted. I do agree they do look wierd but I did say that above.

Havent looked? You know me that well?
Well enough to know you stated you hadn't seen one single pic of a fat superhero done by Mr. Ross. Just reading what you had written. That's all.

mickmike said:
Arguments aside, you are right, his pecs do look odd on that pic. But it seems to me you are plucking at straws. What about the hundreds more painting where his Superman work is incredible.
No, they're breasts. I didn't dispute the quality of his other work. Hell, I own two hardbound books with his art spread throughout.

Seen as my post interrested you so,any comments on the wierdo, child molester thing?
None that I can think of. Talking about pedophilia isn't exactly how I get my kicks.

Though he does have those, this is one of my all time favorite shots by Ross. The re-imagining of Superman #1. Sweet.

And I stand by what I said.I havent seen a fat superhero by Ross. His Pecs look odd but he aint fat on the pic.

Ross meant them to be pecs not breasts, regardless of how they look.So they are pecs.He drewthem,he knows.

I should hope that isnt how you get your kicks.

Nerial,
Im not disagreeing with you..just discussing.

MH

I know. I love discussing interesting topics from someone who might share a slightly different perspective on the matter (in this case, because you're slightly older than me). Nothing more complex than that. :)

Actually, the one where he's sitting down in his Clark getup he looks chubby.

His Wonderwoman looks like a man sometimes, also. : /

OH, and his Flash in one picture had enormous balls. More so than Superman usually has. O.o

^^Yeah, that picture of Clark in his chair is one I hate. He looks fat there.

I guess the biggest reason I criticize Ross more than other artists is that his work looks so realistic compared to most comic artists, and therefore, when he makes someone look unrealistically big it doesn't fit.

No the look like well developed but not ripped (e.g. 1% body fat ) pectorals under a heavy tight fitting shirt.

He didn't look fat, he looked like and large man does when he sits and slumps in a chair.

It's unrealist for a man to fly and lift a train, why not complain about that in Ross' Superman illustrations too?

^^Don't take it personal. This is my opinion.

And, to answer your question, this isn't about the story, the mythos, or the characters. It's about the illustrations. If one of Superman's abilities was to look fat, then yes, Ross' pick would be peachy.

I like most of Ross' work. I have his mythology book. I just don't believe his interpretation of Superman is what I feel is correct, and since it is based off a character instead of someone in real life, Ross' interpretation is only that...an interpretation.
