I mean as this season starts he work at the Daily Planet and everyone has seen him for years now running around without his glasses and his mom is a public official which means they do keep tabs on her son. So how can Clark become Superman with out anyone saying hey that is Clark Kent.

How can anyone see Superman and then see Clark Kent with glasses and not realize they are one and the same.

The whole character is built upon everyone being the most oblivious set of people ever.

As far as Smallville goes, Clark can just say his eyes are getting bad and start wearing glasses and then you can just accept the fact that noone knows that he and Superman are the same. You can use the excuse that he shifts his personality to throw people off, or that he blurs himself slightly like the comics have explained.

It's easy to explain.

mass mindwipe

or perhaps have something in his costume that gives his superman persona some sort of aura

either way, it's hard to think lex hasn't figured it out by now and superman would pretty much confirm his suspicions.

they'll probably just leave it and say we should give him the benefit of the doubt

IMO the whole glasses as suoperman's idenetity is lame in a 1st place i don't know how those comic book writers came up with this idea

exactly and the irony that the one person who is most oblivious is the paper's top invertigative reporter

It's more than just glasses, though...

Jor-El will just wipe everyone's mind of ever knowing Clark

or

Jor-El will change their perception of Clark to be seen as the bumbling fool he is with glasses and greasy hair.

I don't think the smallville writers really care about this problem. They've f**ked up the whole glasses/dual identity thing through out the series because they know that they'll never have to explain it. Smallville will end before it needs explaining. The closest smallville will ever get to superman is a quick shot of clarks chest after a shirt rip in the final scene. Therefore we'll never need to get into the whole argument of people knowing that clark is superman on smallville because it won't be shown.

Either that or 'J' from M.I.B. will turn up with his mind wipe gadget and ask everyone to look into it

:-) :-)

Yea i really wish they had clark start wearing classes back in whisper all the time and to everyone else he can say his eyes are still hurt from the temporary blindness so then with lex having him around clark for a few yrs with glasses on all the time he would start to forget what he would look like before and then it solves lois/jimmy knowing clark early. With the way things are now. In smallville's world superman will probably have a mask/goggles take on costume.

With no disrespect to the thread starter, I am very often stunned at how some people can't seem to figure this out, more so by the apologists than anyone else, as they use this as one of their main arguments against smallville.
Fact is that we will never see a grown up superman, not as we know him, or any other version of it. Because that's not what the show is about.
This was said at the very beginning by the creators.

No offense but its real simple to explain how they'll get around the dual identity thing. Sure we probably wont see it but John Jones the Martian Manhunter is the answer. He is a telepath and shape shifter. He could easily plant a suggestion in someones mind that Clark is not Superman, alter peoples perceptions so they never figure it out or better yet shapeshift into Clark so Superman and Clark can be seen together for Jimmy to take a photo. Does anybody remember when they did something similar at the end of the return of superman with the non Kara Supergirl? Simple stuff.

Why is it even an issue. Like I said earlier, the whole character is built on the fact that everyone Clark/Superman is around (ALOT) are completely oblivious on a regular basis. It is just something that is accepted. Lex/Lois/Jimmy/Perry, all who are around both people regularly should have figured it out years ago that they are the same person.

Having Clark decide he needs glasses is easily explained and something they actually don't have to on the show...it can happen later.

Or he could adopt something he has done in the comics, which is vibrate slightly, just enough to obscure his features.

It's funny cause the logic of having Clark wear glasses to disguise his Superman persona is similiar to a little child thinking that if they close their eyes nobody else can see them. It's even funnier that some people use the fact that Clark doesn't wear glasses in Smallvile as something to bash the show for. Let's get real wearing glasses is a lame disguise.(unless those glasses are attached with a rubber nose and a mustach:cwink:) So just like other posters have been saying there's alot of avenues that the producers can go on seperating the two persona from everyone else.

Exactly and well said.

"How can you give SV Clark dual identities?"

The same way a police officer look different in uniform than he or she does when out.
The same way a friend or family member appears different with contacts instead of the glasses that you are accustom too seeing them with.
Have you ever seen a teacher or someone you see everyday outside of the usual place that you would normally see them and totally did not recognize them.?
Same thing with Tom Welling's Clark Kent, put that fellow in a Blue suit with bright red boots and a big red cape, flying around like a big Blue bird.
Trust me Momma Kent wouldn't recognize her boy. :woot:

At some point I thought about this and couldn't exactly see a logical way around it. One thing was that something would happen to Smallville on a larger scale to prevent people from going: "Bird? Plane? It's that Kent boy!"

At first I thought that it would've been enough to have people closest to him stay at Smallville when he'd leave for Metropolis, but then they had to shove Lois there and that was that. Perhaps if he'd get a haircut and with that the glasses might set someone off - if they find scissors strong enough to cut his hair with... not that I'd like to see him go running around with that bush on his head.

This or that, I guess they won't even try to explain it since Supes has gotten away with it from the beginning and at least I can't come up with anything that'd sound believable and logical so quickly. Migu-El and Billy Watson made good points and I think people should try picturing their friends (close and those more distant) flying around with blue tights and glasses and consider if they'd be recognizeable or not :)

Manhunter can also mimic all of Superman's powers. How about an easier explanation. Have Jonn shape shift into Superman, and have him and Clark together in a public setting. in the news. on film.

They did something similar to that in Lois and Clark.

Everyone's coming up with some good ideas and insight. There's tons of possibility's that the producers can come up to tie this identity crisis in a neat littele bow.

Superman Birthright;Clark returns to Smallville, determined to learn more about his alien heritage. He tells his mother Martha that he wants to unearth his spaceship. He and Martha use the data tablet that came with Clark from Krypton to examine holographic records of Kryptonian history. Clark realizes the S insignia had great significance on Krypton and seemed to symbolize the Kryptonian's hope for a better tomorrow. He refuses to wear a mask while taking flight. Martha's solution is that only Clark's human half requires a disguise. She dresses him in professional, nerdy attire that stands apart from his usual look and gives him prescription glasses to wear. She promises they will refract light so no one will notice his startling blue eyes (which would otherwise give him away). Clark learns to slouch and act nervous and clumsy, to distance his civilian identity from tall, self-assertive Superman. Secret Identity:Years later, Clark has moved to Manhattan, where he is a writer for The New Yorker. While his colleagues tease him about his name from time to time, he genuinely likes his job. He continues saving lives dressed as Superman, using the idea that nobody would believe someone saying he had been rescued by Superman (government agents continue to investigate his exploits though). One day Clark is called in by his boss. Fearing that he is getting fired, he is pleasantly surprised to learn his boss has gotten him an appointment with a publisher. She points out, however, that his work is 'all head, but no heart', and that he is like an alien observer. Reeling from a potential book deal, he accompanies his colleagues to a café for beers and burger, unaware that they have set him up to introduce him to a woman called Lois. She storms out and he follows her, telling her that he's quite familiar with the usual set-ups, being named Clark Kent. She introduces herself as Lois Chaudhari. He decides to ask her out, and at the end of the evening, the two kiss. They start a relationship, though he feels guilt for not telling Lois of his secret.Later, seeing a civilian in danger, Clark is lured into a trap and is captured. He awakes in a government facility with scientists attempting to extract samples from his invulnerable skin. Clark manages to escape and finds bodies of various others marked with powers, including babies in a dissection lab. Clark evacuates the occupants and destroys the building. Afraid, Clark hides in his apartment for four days before forcing himself to go out into the world. As a precaution, he decides to wear glasses (much like Superman) to prevent from being recognized from a distance. Clark publishes his first book, with people commenting on a more 'alive' tone to his writing that still retains his unique perspective. He continues his rescue work, but is more cautious and remains wary of Superman sightings on the Internet. After a row with Lois, Clark angrily leaves, but patches it up with her and reveals his secret in the process. She swears to keep his secret and the two are more in love than ever, and Clark is no longer alone, ready to face whatever lies ahead.

I know people like to say that it won't be addressed on the show but Al/Miles have mentioned before they had come up with a plan, but that not everyone would like it. They had also mentioned before that they wouldn't have to worry about things getting that far (which I believe was before they knew just how long this show would last). I am really curious what it is they came up with and if the new showrunners have their own plans or will stick with it.

I guess there is always the possibility that it won't be addressed, just depends on how they chose to end this thing.

I personally vote for the Martian Manhunter option that some have mentioned. That is a good throwback to the old comics and I think would fit pretty well in this universe.

Superman's disguise takes a tremendous suspension of disbelief anyway you slice it and that will be no different for this interpretation.

I personally don't mind Lex knowing his secret, I think that could make for some good drama. But I like Lois not knowing it at first at least. Just the fact that she is so taken with Superman and dismisses Clark so easily is always fun.
