This seems like an important enough plot element to warrant a discussion. Are they close enough for their falling out to be tragic? Explain why you think they are(n't).

Personally? Kinda close but not Bucky/Sam and Cap close. But Team wise they know for the greater good they must work together. They're locked down when it comes to team wok.

I don't think so at all and as a matter of fact, the MCU has shown them as almost rivals more than anything. They've had a few moments where they worked together but when they aren't in the heat of the battle working as a team they seem to be at each others throats quite a bit.

I'd consider them more like co-workers than friends.

They've been through a lot together, along with the relationship Cap had with Tony's father. I'd imagine them showing a bit more chemistry at the beginning to make the separation that much more intense.

I know this is gonna get weird. Waiting for it.

Steve and Tony are really close on Tumblr.

I would say that they two aren't particularly close, but share a strong common bond through Howard. Howard's obsession with Steve, shown in both the ending of CA:TFA and Agent Carter, likely had a profound impact on L'il Tony. There's a bit of a sibling rivalry in their interactions.

The tragedy won't come from the break up of the friendship - we've seen in both Avengers films that it was always fragile - but to the impact Steve and Tony's falling out has on their friends and colleagues.

It's funny, Steve and Bucky was meant to feel tragic between best friends at the end of the second but it didn't work because the buildup wasn't there. They had moments in the first and flashbacks in the second but it never felt like a true genuine relationship.

Tony and Steve on the other hand aren't meant to be that close but because of their interactions together throughout the movies and that buildup, it'll feel all the more tragic than the Bucky relationship ever felt.

It depends on who's POV. Steve considers Tony a work buddy, that's why he easily will choose Bucky over him. Tony on the other hand actually considers Steve to be one of his closer friends. Gotta remember Tony is pretty weird and dysfunctional, and isn't exactly the nicest guy with his own friends (Pepper, Happy, Rhodes).

This actually makes the betrayal in CW even more poignant, for Tony that is. Not only is Cap siding against him philosophically, but he's also telling Tony they're not really friends. Bucky having been responsible for the Starks' deaths rubs even more salt on Tony's wound. Given this backdrop, RDJ nails the delivery in that trailer scene, IMO.

Bucky/Sam are close? I'd say IM/Cap are closer than they are. Yeah I agree, IM/Cap are work buddies. I'd say Thor/Cap are closer than IM/Cap.

Steve doesn't tell Tony they're not really friends though, just that he's helping Bucky because Bucky is his friend. Bucky needs him. Steve's friends with Nat and she's on the other side a well. It's not about prioritizing friendship but in this case Bucky needs him. I think if Tony, Sam or Nat needed him in the way Bucky does now he'd stand up for them as well.

I think Evans put it best when he said it's more than friends, they're all family. They're more than work buddies, these people have lived together and fought together.

AOU jumps into the action but before that they'd been living together at Stark Towers as a team for quite a while. It's not as if the punch a clock and see each other 9-5.

Just like in the comics. :funny:

In other words, they're as close as Barton and Banner.

I think Cap considers Tony a work buddy,he's closer to Thor imo. But Tony,as lunatic as he is,sees more in Steve, that probably has also to do with his father working with Cap during WW2. The interesting thing for me is that they are the Avengers' face and the two most important members. Without them there's no Avengers,so their 'war' will certainly affect them on a personal level, but will also shake the foundation of the Avengers, what they stand for and how people look at them.

The movie needs to do a good job selling me that they actually have a friendship, because the "So was I" line seemed really forced.

In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it was taken out of context or stitched together from two different scenes.

I'll have to agree with the "work buddies" label. They seem friendly enough when **** isn't hitting the fan, but Steve seems to have a more cordial relationship with every other Avenger before Tony, namely Natasha and Thor. Tony's the only one he's really argued with. Not to say that friends don't argue, but those two were at odds for half of The Avengers and what felt like most of Age of Ultron.

Bucky: Guys I went to see Joan Baez last night. It was such a great concert.

Cap: I was at the Joan Baez concert last night too!

Tony: So was I.

I feel like that probably happened a few times in the trailer, including the parts with Steve and Natasha on the phone.

I don't think that scene is out of context especially since the actors have spoken about it.

As for the relationship there's emotionally and dramatically more going on between them as characters over the Avengers two films than any other pair of Avengers. It's a complicated relationship but it's a rich one to play with.

There's certainly on screen far more between them as characters than there was between Steve & Bucky entering TWS (and maybe even exiting) where they felt they had to give us a flashback to make the audience remember who Bucky even was and why the relationship was important. But even with that the end scene was sold because of the writing and particularly the acting by Chris. I don't have any doubts that RDJ and Chris will be able to sell what the story dictates.

They had a flashback that to set up their final confrontation. "I'm with you till the end of the line" would have come out of nowhere otherwise.
