How does a person stay true to themselves?

Does it mean staying true to your nature or staying true to your ideal self?

Is it worth it even if it means conflicting with society's expectations?

Your going to have to be more specific I think...what you're asking is kind of a loaded question.

How is it loaded? What about this?

Is it possible to stay true to yourself?

Ask Tim Hardway.... :yay:

And the thread immediately descends into a discussion of Blind Fury's hookers and gay bashing ...

It's a dumb question, because the answer is simple.

Just be yourself, who gives a d.a.m.n what everyone else think or feel. There will always be a sigment of people who like you or hate you, agreeable and disagreeable, attractable or unattractable, etc. There is nothing else you can do and be true about it, than to be yourself...... that's what make you unique.

What does it mean to stay true to yourself? From a philosophical standpoint of course.

To cut off your nose to spite your face?

Give us more of an example.

Like if you a faithful boyfriend and you could have a one night stand with a girl and your gf would never find out would you still do it type?

This one's easy. Just do what you want to/feel is best.

Does it mean staying true to your nature or staying true to your ideal self?
Sometimes these two are the same, but IMO the ideal self is a mixture of your own natural instincts and the society around you. Both can be either good or bad and just depends on the situation. I mean, you could feel deep down that being true to yourself means killing people while molesting 3 year-olds, but society tells you that is wrong (hopefully). This is where that balance comes in.

Is it worth it even if it means conflicting with society's expectations?
It's IMO a personal decision. I think that if being true to yourself goes against some of society's norms, but doesn't hurt anyone else really, then you shoudl feel free to do whatever. It's when being true to yourself can hurt others that you need to take a step back and analyze it more.

I see. Is that what you feel in your heart or does that perspective come from your idealized self?

For me it comes from my belief system. I have a moral and ethical code that I believe in.

Doesn't that mean, I'm infallible, self-righteous, or better than others?

No not at all.

It just means that I set the standard on how I would like to live my life. I'm not perfect, but I'm striving for perfection in my every day life and pursuits.

It's not that simple. How do you know your true self from your idealized self?

What if the two are at conflict with each other?

Finally, someone with a brain.

So you have created an idealized self you aim to become rather than be led by your natural instincts.

What if there's no afterlife, would you have regreted not staying true to your nature.

Desire. That how you stay true to yourself. Desire to life according to your terms regardless of the circumstances and regardless of how many times you fail...even if it conflicts with society's expectations.

You say nature vs. your ideal self. How do you define nature? The only nature I'm concern with is the original and unspoiled nature of every human being.

If I'm in touch with that then my ideal self mirrors my the human nature I was born with and I live the rest of my life trying to retain that.

Finally, someone with a brain.

No.
All of that is freaking obvious.
Well, I mean he does have a functioning brain, but so does everyone else in the thread.
The answers to the question are common sense.

It's amazing that any time Jag's name comes up you pop out of nowhere to defend him.

amazing and sad. :csad:

Being called sad by you is like being called irritating by Paris Hilton...

First lets figure out what it means to stay true to yourself.

Is it staying true to your ideals or staying true to your impulses?
