Just curious how many of you have the same interests as your parents? Are your kids interested in the same things you are?

My dad was a mechanic and loved stock car racing. Mom liked watching sports. I wasn't really interested in either.

My dad is very passionate about cars, classic cars and motorbikes and I haven't 'followed' him into that pursuit as a interest or pastime as such. His working trade was in Road Safety Development and Passenger Vehicle Safety that I knew in my time growing up with him but prior to me being born, he was a camera man and assistant within television and so I suppose that's a pursuit or background we have 'shared' in terms of interest, given I am a film maker myself these days, and hold such passion for cinema, film, film history and film making.

All the geekiness and nerdism is my own though.

My mum's passion has always been flowers and gardening and I love the therapeutic qualities of being out in the garden so yes, you could say, I've shared this as well.

Not having children of my own, I can't answer whether they would have followed my geek ways.

Mom was a great cook and i have taken a very keen interest in cooking as well. I guess my interest in movies and news in general comes from my dad.

I'm definitely the nerd of the family. I call dad a low grade nerd. He used to watch The Next Generation, and he took mom to see Star Wars when they were dating. I saw Predator because he was watching it on TV. But that is as far as his sci fi interest goes.

Mom had no interest in it at all. My brother knows comics because I read them. He likes them but is really just a fan of the movies.

Dad was a comic book fanatic and scifi lover, I inherited that basically. He had first editions of most of the Marvel books back in the 60s and his mom tossed them out, which he hates to this day.

Not sure where my nerdism comes from (to the depth and level it is, particularly in superheroes, as there is very little interest in my immediate or extended family in it), my brother, who is five years older was age appropriate for the first in-take of Star Wars and has an interest and low level passion, but I am full on across all aspects that this forum represents and also a collector as well. My bro's real hobby is military modelling, painting and war history really.

I’m sure my children will aspire to be message board moderators.

My parents don't really have any hobbies. I've never really seen them do anything just for fun that you could classify as one. Cooking is done out of necessity. They aren't musical. They aren't really artistic. They aren't sporty. They don't collect anything or aren't into anything.

Nope, can't think of a single thing.

On the other hand, if I ever had children one day, I would have a ton of hobbies that they might find interesting.

Regarding my parents and I... there's nothing there, but I think it was more out of circumstance than anything. My dad wasn't around enough for me to really learn what interests he had. My former stepdad was a car guy, but he was also an alcoholic who we didn't really spend much time with. I know nothing about cars. And then my mom never really had any hobbies or anything of that nature. She spent all her time with us five kids and took no time for herself.

That said, all of that made me determined to really spend time with my kids and teach them anything I can... introduce them to everything that interested me, etc. I loved the idea of them following in my footsteps regarding my multitude of interests. What I've noticed is that no matter how much I try to get them to love comics, Hobbits, writing, reading, and anything else... they always find something more akin to their own tastes. My oldest quickly fell in love with video games and technology... two things I couldn't care less about. My youngest is closer to me in tastes, but she came across her love of art naturally without my influence as I hadn't done anything artsy since shortly after high school. She has shown some interest in the hobbit, and my oldest has developed an interest in fantasy overall like I have, but no matter how much I try to lead them toward things I love... they tend to go another way.

Once they get past a certain young age, I think kids just find their own path, influenced more so by people their own age than their parents. The exception I've noticed are boys and their fathers. Sadly, I never had that opportunity and have no sons of my own.

My parents loved movies and sports, especially football. Yeah, neither of them read comics or anything, but they are heavy readers and encouraged me to read whatever I wanted. So, I got a fair amount.

Sex, right?

I wouldn't really call that a hobby. Otherwise there's lots of things we could classify as hobbies like watching TV, surfing the internet.

My father, little brother and wife are into photography. Meanwhile me along with my mother and father are amateur musicians.

My dad is insanely passionate about football and I couldn't care less. However, we both bring an obsessive, borderline-on-the-spectrum level of granular detail gathering to the things we get into. He can rattle of stats the way I can rattle off filmographies.

My daughter is 3, and she's picked up a few things from me. She has her dollhouse full of Peppa Pigs and My Little Ponies, but Batman also lives there and Godzilla comes by to visit Kong. I'm hoping she'll pick up music too. I have an array of keyboards I let her fiddle with or I'll hook up a microphone, drench it in effects, and let her play with that. Who knows though. She'll eventually figure out that I'm not actually the coolest person ever and get into her own things.

I think they only tend to be interested if their parents happen to be into stuff that is interesting.

I owe my love of music and books to both of my parents. It was my love of comics that finally got my daughter to read for pleasure. :)

My Dad has never been a big reader as such, even less now, bless him, with suffering Macular degeneration, Mum has to a greater extent, has been and my reading interest and wish to read has grown as I've got older. Due to me so ill as a child, missing a lot of schooling time and not getting a formal educational start until later than most, I didn't get to read or write and so was a late developer behind my peers but once I'd grasped it, I just soaked every book I could find.

My main hobby has been cosplay for a number of years and there is no way my daughter would ever be interested...!
In fact, she may secretly be ashamed of me! :cwink:

my dad was and is, a huge sports fan so i've inherited that from him. third generation atlanta braves fan, lord help us lol

my mom used to play competitive pool, my dad played for fun and gambling and was apparently really good, but my brother picked that up, i didn't. i have played on occasion but it never struck a fire in me

my mother was into drag racing and cars, my brother picked that one up too lol

Depends of their age and attitude you interest them with.
