How should super speed be portrayed?

I think that would be the best way to do it. Maybe the can explain his speeds during those times so that we know if everything is moving slow he is moving at a certain speed and when he is just moving fast and everything around him is normal he is moving closer to the speed of sound or something.

Not so much something I want as something I *don't* want: an excess of "does ridiculous feat of speed, gets hit in face by guy who is moving like subjective molasses". Inexperience provides for some leeway, but really, the guy should never get hit by an ordinary human swinging at him, unless his powers aren't working or he doesn't see the guy at all ( and is for whatever reason not moving ).

If you absolutely have to have normal-ish speed opponents challenge him in a direct fight, then write him as having some endurance limits. That way, if you want to have such a fight, all you need to do is write into the plot something to tire him out first, like a set of bombs all over the city that he needs to stop in seconds. Bam, you now have a Flash whose reflexes are comparatively crappy until he has a chance to rest.

I always remember being blown away by the season 4 episode of Smallville where the Flash turns up for the first time. The effects in SV truly were way better in the earlier seasons, because of the bigger budget no doubt. The final scene were Clark is racing Barry (or Wally, I forget which he was) both running really fast, and then the Flash turns it up to 11 and just goes even faster was so good.

Stuff like that really gets across just how fast the Flash can move. You think he's already running at top speed, and then BOOM, he quadruples it. Hope we see something similar in this show.

Clark was racing Bart. I liked the reveal of him being much faster than Clark too. But, who could Barry do that to since he's the only speedster we'll likely see at the moment?

Unless you're just talking about them showing how fast Barry generally runs and then revealing he could go faster if he felt like it just like any other person who runs.

Probably not a season 1 thing (or at least not early in season 1) but they could use Jay Garrick.

It could also happen the other way around with a Reverse Flash proving to be faster than the Flash. I can imagine Barry chasing after the Reverse Flash only to quadruple speed in him.

    I hope it will :)
Even the season finale should have one, if possible

DC animated features did a better job with Flash animation
This one is good, but it looks like Dragon Ball movements, fast attacks not feeling that super fast, and teleporting

I think it's pretty cool for a CW show.

Sorta reminds me of the table tennis game Barry and Wally would've had in JLM.

Effects in X-Men: DOFP look great !

Edit: Can't wait to post a Avengers AOU's version of Quicksilver gif for comparison.

    Here's Smallville's Impulse, not bad.

(In the second X-Men DOFP gif, the bearded dude looks straight from Hangover movies)

    This.

The white streaks they added reminded me of the way Carmine Infantino used to draw Barry's speed. The DoFP approach is serviceable but doesnt have the 'oompf' factor for me.

Or as close to it as possible.

As far as depicting him learning he has super-speed powers....

I remember the scene from Spider-Man, where Parker catches the tray, and at the time thinking - Wow that's totally the scene how they should portray Barry's classic origin scene and him realizing he has speed.

Then quickly realizing- now they'll never use it for fear people thinking they ripped of Spider-Man.

well, maybe. But if TBBT can do a half decent flash, I've got high hopes for the
    series.
I reckon a mix of slow-mo, for Barry's perspective, and blurring, for those watching him do his thing.
