First Avenger How will Captain America do internationally?

Marvel will emphasize more on the "First Avenger" tag than Capt. America oversea, and while I don't like it I think it might broaden its appeal. Also, the international community actually have a better relationship with U.S. now, which is why President Obama enjoyed a pretty good standing in other countries. Coupling that with the recent successful kill of Osama bin Laden, I think these factors will help Capt. America's WW BO.

killing instead of capturing on foreign soil without informing the authorities is nothing that makes the world go "America, F*** yeah!".
It may help Obama inside the US, but in Europe it sure didn't boost his popularity.

So THAT factor will not necessarily help Cap

Can't say I saw much condemnation of Obama myself. There were some people who were concerned about the circumstances and if the killing was legal, but I never heard anyone outright condemn Obama (well anyone European). Plus most people seem to agree that the situation with Pakistan meant they pretty much had to go unannounced.

Not that I'm saying we should all go 'woot, America'. I doubt you'll ever see Europe do that (well maybe France that one time, but...). But by the same measure I don't really think Obama's image has really taken much toll in Europe.

I still think Captain America is going to do well regardless of the killing of Bin-Laden.

This may come as a surprise, but here in Europe, we tend to watch our movies if we expect to be entertained by them, just like anywhere else, and not based on any political agenda. If the trailer delivers, and if the word of mouth is good, people will see it, regardless of what Obama may or may not have done a week ago, or whether the word "America" is in the title or not.

Edit: At least, that's my impression. I can only speak for myself, obviously. There may be the odd fanatic who thinks otherwise.

I don't think it's so much the title of the movie itself that would put non Americans off. It's that the title of the movie leads to the assumption that the movie will be a Team America: World Police... but played straight.

Although I do think the trailer did well not to be all jingoistic and what not.

And the Bin Laden thing? I doubt anyone is too concerned about the legalities of the hit. Everyone knows, well, should know, that the Pakistan government is corrupt as all hell. It should be common knowledge by now.

Im looking forward to the movie, i could not give a **** if America is in the title.
I think they should make a Captain Britain movie, how would that sell in the states??

lol, it wouldn't, if the comic sales are anything to go by. Critically acclaimed as one of the best Marvel comics of it's time... still didn't sell above 20k a month!?

Not because it has Britain in the title, but because people not in the know would just think he's a British rip off of Captain America.

See thats kind off ironic, many Americans are either worried or complaining about the rest of the world not seeing Captain America because it has America in the title. These are probably the same Americans who would not go see a Captain Britain movie for the same reason...

I'm Australian, and me and my friends recently saw the trailer that played with Thor, and I gotta say the reaction was really positive, I mean Im the only one of my friends who has read any of the comics, and yet they were all really eager to see it, one of my friends even asked why they hadnt made a Captain America movie earlier, I personally dont think that having "America" in the title will have too much of a impact on it's performance as most will simply see it as a movie about a superhero "Killin nazi's"

Now I could see a Captain Britain movie being made if that was its selling point. I think it would just be a matter of marketing after the character correctly. Whether that means the right kind of trailers, tv spots etc or naming the film something like Excalibur due to lack of brand recognition for Captain Britain, who knows.

I'd see a Captain Britain movie. Then I've worked at an ENGLISH/BRITISH Renaissance faire for 13 years based on Bristol over there. lol I had a guy working for the shop I managed that was over here from London for classes and ended up working in England during the 1500's lol

Most people here have never heard of the character, that all. Its not like theres some huge amount of anti-British sentiment in the States or anything like that. I mean, hell, The Kings Speech made over 135 million in US theaters with about another 20 million on DVD, or so I've heard.

I think that strategy will backfire on them. How can you expect to sell a product without using its real name??

Word of mouth is a big part of this thing. People who are not comic book followers will be like "What's a first Avenger?" and may not even think of going to see it because of that. But the name Capt America?? People know that name. Good or bad ......

I think this is ill-advised and self-loathing. I think, in an effort to get people to like us, it will do more harm than good.

Hey ....instead of "Superman" let's name it "Man from Another Planet".

It's going to look like a great action movie. It'll do fine.

Most Europeans I know don't care that its captain America. Every Hollywood movie is full of non-costumed captain Americas anyway.
