How will Thor fly?

Damn, I love Thor spinning the hammer. It iconic to the character and used for more then just flight. Dimensional, time travel. Summoning tornado/whirlwinds. And as an original pose starting action/fight.

They have to figure out a way to complete this visual, just like the Kirby Hulk flight pose they did in the first Hulk movie. Otherwise it would be like Superman w/o his red cape, the SS w/o his board, ... Thor w/o ... well his hammer!

C'mon Marvel make it work. He's gay enough with those Gugi pants he's wearing (I want the leggings)!

Reminds me of that 80's commericial with the New York Rangers

I think the Hammer should just glow and allow him to fly. that's all.

The spin and toss would be hard to pull off in live action. Thinking about it literally, apart from the take off, there's the flight itself: changing course mid-flight when he should just follow the line he threw the hammer in...Then there's the landing. He should just smack into the ground with the hammer, but we know from the comics the hammer loses momemtum and 'reverses' itself somewhat so Thor holds on to the slowly dropping hammer for a soft landing.
It works fine in the comics (it's a magic hammer after all) but I can understand why they have seen it as a problem trying to emulate that on film.

Like others here, I'd say have the thing glow, Thor raises it holding the hilt, and can fly holding the hammer out in front of him. That would work fine for me.

Exactly...and then the audience would be like "Oh it's glowing. Must be magic or something..." And never think anything of it.

But the whole throwing the hammer and grabbing on to it or having it spin...it puts too much attention of the reasoning behind the flying ability. Don't let people focus on something like that or else they'll pick it apart.

Remember this 80's hercules movie with Lou Ferrigno swirling a big block of cement rock attached to a chain over his head and throw it to carry him across space in a chariot
that was well done by Mr. Ferrigno because you could fell the power of his throw
and Thor should do about the same with is hammer just like in the "Buscemas, 'ron frenz's" comic books
any less would be an insult to the spirit of it.
by the way sir Antony Hopkins looks very good as Odin
he's one of the most believable character so far who looks like he is straight from the comic book .

He can fly because he swings his hammer so hard and so fast with his super duper strength that when he throws it the hammer pulls him along with it.
Stan Lee's reasoning of Thor flying.

i think he will only fly for emergency or urgent matters. In the Avengers he will have to when dealing with Iron Man and Hulk cuz Iron Man can fly and Hulk can just a mile plus each jump but with Capt America he wont have to he is just a normal man compared to the rest of the teams travel abilities

Does any one know if he will fly at all. In all the marvel movies the heroes are not nearly as mighty as in the comics including losing some abilities they had. So does thor actually fly or did they feel that made him to unrealistic. Now dont get me wrong i generaly agree with this decision to make it more beleivible then awww inspiring. But i am curious as to how might the mighty thor is. In the comics he is one of the strongest but based on what ive seen it doesnt seem like he is to much differnet then any other asgardians. I just wonder if he has any powers in this or if its all the hammer like instead of super strength the hammer just packs one hell of a punch

I dare anyone to try and spin a hammer in real life it doesnt work out so well because the shape and weight distribution of the hammer. Not to mention I can imagine thor sitting there spinning the hammer and practicaly i think it would look silly they would have to use CGI to make it look like it was moving fast and not like thor is trying to lasso some one with his hammer

Hammer pulls him because it's magical. No spinning and throwing needed. That's how I think it should be.

It's been done for HUNDREDS of years as a SPORT Pumpkin.

Not to mention a Sling has been used even longer to throw rocks by hand using the SAME technique Thor uses.

CGI with a sling kind of CGI SENSOR in Chris' hand shouldn't be that hard to do.

Well, I don't know what kind of bearing it has on the movie (probably none), but the upcoming Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon features Thor flying simply by holding the hammer. His first mini-episode went up a few days ago and it featured him just floating without spinning the hammer or anything. I was a bit disappointed in that, personally, since if you could preserve the spinning hammer flight anywhere, it'd be in animation.

maybe that is how he will fly in the thor movie as well. i am also disappointed by this. i liked how in this pick he is floating down

I can see a plain ol' swing of Mjolnir and then flying sure, but the classic spin should at least be used in the future at LEAST to throw Mjolnir or opening a portal.

In the pic he reminds me of Mary Poppins. I'm hoping the Avengers movie will have Thor twirling mjolnir. It's already gonna be cg heavy so what's one more thing.

he could swing the hammer and have it glow.

thor is called the god of thunder but he esentially a storm god rigt i think he fly by creating a wind vortex around hiimself

He hovers by using wind drafts to keep him floating...it's listed as on of his official powers. He also spins Mjolnir ALOT in Avengers:Eearth's Mightiest Heroes btw

True

Iron Man, War Machine, Colossus, Human Torch, & Ghost Rider all seemed far less powerful than they really are

I think Thor should be the strongest hero on The Avengers. And one of the most visual characters.

Lets hope he has at least one great flying scene on this movie.
