Despite all the chaos going on around the world these days, it's encouraging to hear about people investing themselves in such interests as you mentioned above.

I too was originally a Communications major, hoping to break into journalism. However, after interning at the State Department and realizing how fragmented the media has become, I decided to switch to IA.

I like this field particularly because of the endless paths one can follow, and I've heard plenty of cases where people have different majors and minors. Even if you take your linguistics/language skills into State or another agency, they can greatly benefit from your expertise.

Do you have any idea where you want to work?

I don't, although I've considered translation. Honestly not sure what I'd do with it. Life goal is to learn as many languages as possible before I die. I already speak English fluently, speak okay Spanish and Japanese, and started taking French. Most Italic languages are easy because they're all very closely related with lots of cognates (and I sing in Italian and Latin for my music major all the time) so that's not terribly hard. I could at least somewhat communicate in any of those countries.

In any case, I've no idea what I'd do. I just like the learning of it, lol.

None of my Arab/Muslim family members take off Friday (it's not required in religion). They also fast every Ramadan even though it is much harder in the US. Basically in the middle east, during fasting they change the schedule of everything including restaurants/shopping/etc... to accommodate everyone practicing. In the US it is much harder to fast because obviously schedules are not changed around in the same manner as it is not the predominant religion/way of life in US.

No, I'm saying you were asserting that others need to be more accepting of other cultures without knowing their actual knowledge or family make up. I made assumptions from having Arab family members in the US. I would assume based on how Aziz writes and the nature of this forum, that he lives in a western country such as the US because of it. That's far from being culturally ignorant, it is intuitive to the situation based on actual experience.

I know Ramadan is harder in the US. One of my close co-workers is Muslim and I have other Muslim friends. May family may not be Muslim, but it's not like I am ignorant of or have no experience with people who practice that religion here in the US.

When Aziz said he had Friday and Saturday off, I assumed he was -not- in the US because those are not typical "weekend days". And correct me if I'm wrong, but I was thinking we were talking about general weekends, not personal weekends (like if I had a job where I worked Sunday through Thursday, MY weekend would be Friday/Saturday but the culturally 'normal' weekend is Saturday/Sunday).

In any case, I did apologize for being wrong. I knew I was close to the mark, but no one's perfect. I was glad to be corrected about it. I'm not trying to argue with anyone or say that I absolutely know more about it than other people. But I digress, I should probably move to a different topic or bow out at this point.

had aziz not made a stink, he wouldn't be in here right now. SF declined for example and everyone respected that. when you make a spectacle, of course people are going to encourage you to keep it up, it's the internet after all. i even volunteered to not play so more fresh blood could participate but i got voted in so i'm going to play.

That's a good goal to have, regardless of whether or not you know exactly what to do with it.

Too many people are in college with jobs as a priority over knowing what they actually enjoy, developing their skills, or discovering themselves at a deeper level than the context of the job market.

I can't speak Italian at all, but I got the chance to go to Italy in 2011 and it was one of the best experiences of my life.

Keep doing it for the learning of it, and you'll eventually figure out where to go with it
