I am creating this thread to discuss song lyrics. If there are certain songs or songwriters that appeal to you, this is the place to discuss them. Or if you just want to share some lyrics with us you find inspiring, cool, funny etc. go ahead.

I'll start, with Joni Mitchell(surprise, surprise).

"They took all the trees, put 'em in a tree museum, and they charged the people a dollar and a half just to see'em"

That line is from "Big Yellow Taxi". I just love it, always makes me chuckle.

Wow, talk about thread failure.

Lesson number 1: Never post anything even remotely meaningful on the Hype.

"I’ve got the understanding of a 4-year-old
I’ve got the piece of mind of a killer soul
I’ve got the rationale of a new york cop
I’ve got the patience of a chopping block yeah

Trip like I do
Trip like I do (oh my God this is the best)

I’ve got the acumen of a season broke
I’ve got the lack of say of a billion souls
I’ve got the world on my back but I don’t seem to care
I’ve got the comprehension of a world unaware yeah

Trip like I do"

bad assssssssss, its from Filter's "Trip Like I Do" song, 'tis the best :o

LOL, great line. Joni Mitchell is a genius.

I don't think the line means anything, maybe it's a response to something that was going around in the environment at the time. It's a perfect example of how great music doesn't have to make sense as long as it's great.

Anyway, here's my submission, thought I'd get to it before anyone else does.

"If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now. It's just a spring clean for the May Queen."

If you don't know what song that lyric is from, you're a sad person.

I triumphed in the face of adversity
And I became the man I never thought I'd be
And now my biggest challenge, a thing called love
I guess I'm not as tough as I thought I was

Hail Mary 2003:

The mixtape that sent Ja Rule and Murder Inc. into Sales Hell and damn near bankruptcy.

Every day she fears her life will end
Every time the call rings they are late
They never come quite in time to see his fist
Leave its mark on the side of her disgrace
They'll never charge him anyway and you know it
Say we can't get involved today
So where's the choice and who protects her now
Bruised and battered the blood has stained her gown
Useless screams for help can't save her now
Choices rendered the house is burning down
No one will ever understand cause they don't have to feel his crushing hands
And the ears that ignored her screams before are now wondering what she did it for
But with a bottle of kerosene she found her freedom
And then burned the bastard to the ground and ran
The fire will now wash away the blood on her white wedding dress

"Damn it feels good to be a gangsta" By the Geto Boys
Verse 1

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
A real gangsta-ass ***** plays his cards right
A real gangsta-ass ***** never runs his ****in mouth
Cuz real gangsta-ass *****s don't start fights
And *****s always gotta high cap
Showin' all his boys how he shot em
But real gangsta-ass *****s don't flex nuts
Cuz real gangsta-ass *****s know they got em
And everythings cool in the mind of a gangsta
Cuz gangsta-ass *****s think deep
Up three-sixty-five a year 24/7
Cuz real gangsta ass *****s don't sleep

And all I gotta say to you
Wannabe, gonnabe, *****uckin', *****-eatin' prankstas
Cuz when the fry dies down what the **** you gonna do
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta

Verse 2

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
Feedin' the poor and hepin out wit they bills
Although I was born in Jamaica
Now I'm in the US makin' deals
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
I mean one that you don't really know
Ridin' around town in a drop-top Benz
Hittin' switches in my black six-fo'
Now gangsta-ass *****s come in all shapes and colors
Some got killed in the past
But this gangtsa here is a smart one
Started living for the lord and I'll last

Now all I gotta say to you
Wannabe, gonnabe, *****-eatin' *****uckin' prankstas
When the **** jumps off what the **** you gonna do
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta

Verse 3

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
A real gangta-ass ***** knows the play
Real gangsta-ass *****s get the flyest of the *****es
Ask that gangsta-ass ***** Little Jake
Now *****es look at gangsta-ass *****s like a stop sign
And play the role of Little Miss Sweet
But catch the ***** all alone get the digit take her out
and then dump-hittin' the ass with the meat
Cuz gangsta-ass *****s be the gang playas
And everythings quiet in the clique
A gangsta-ass ***** pulls the trigger
And his partners in the posse ain't tellin' off ****
Real gangsta-ass *****s don't talk much
All ya hear is the black from the gun blast
And real gangsta-ass *****s don't run for ****
Cuz real gangsta-ass *****s can't run fast
Now when you in the free world talkin' **** do the ****
Hit the pen and let the motha****as shank ya
But *****s like myself kick back and peep game
Cuz damn it feels good to be a gangsta

Verse 4

And now, a word from the President!
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
Gettin voted into the White House
Everything lookin good to the people of the world
But the Mafia family is my boss
So every now and then I owe a favor gettin' down
like lettin' a big drug shipment through
And send 'em to the poor community
So we can bust you know who
So voters of the world keep supportin' me
And I promise to take you very far
Other leaders better not upset me
Or I'll send a million troops to die at war
To all you Republicans, that helped me win
I sincerely like to thank you
Cuz now I got the world swingin' from my nuts
And damn it feels good to be a gangsta

Driving around in a Voltswagon van
thinking 'bout the people upside down in Japan.
Staring at the stars in a distant galaxy
wondering if there's someone out there staring back at me...

Yes you are

The lyric is from "Stairway To Heaven".

It is sad that alot of kids these days have never even hear Stairway to Heaven in it's entirety. I heard a guy at school saying he thought Led Zepplin stole Stairway from the tencious d song "tribute". I blame the radio stations.

Oh I love Led Zeppelin, I have about 20 different songs by them on my comp. It's just that I don't like the song Stairway To Heaven. It got WWWAAAAAAYYYYY too much overplay. It's overrated. Much like Freebird by Skynrd.

The best rock n roll song of all time is the live version of "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" by The Allman Brothers Band off of "Live At The Filmore East".

Freebird and Stairway can't be overplayed. It isn't possible.

My favorite Led Zeppelin song is "Over The Hills And Far Away".

Hey Lady--you got the love I need
Maybe, more than enough.
Oh Darling Darling Darling, walk a while with me
Oh you've got so much...

Many times I've loved - Many times been bitten
Many times I've gazed along the open road.

Many times I've lied - Many times I've listened
Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.

Many dreams come true and some have silver linings
I live for my dream and a pocketful of gold.

Mellow is the man who knows what he's been missing
Many many men can't see the open road.

Many is a word that only leaves you guessing
Guessing 'bout a thing you really ought to know, ooh!
You really ought to know...

So true.

And my favorite Zeppelin song is "Trampled Underfoot"

Greasy, slicked-down body
Groovy leather trim
I like the way you hold the road
Mama, it ain't no sin
Talkin' 'bout love, talkin' 'bout love, talkin' 'bout

Ooh, trouble-free transmission helps your oil's flow
Mama, let me pump your gas, mama, let me through your door
Talkin' 'bout love, ah, talkin' 'bout love, ooh
I'm talkin' 'bout

Dig that heavy metal underneath your hood
Baby, I can work all night, believe I got the perfect tools
Talkin' 'bout lo-ove, talkin' 'bout lo-ove, talkin' 'bout

A model built for comfort, really built with style
Special list edition, mama, let me feast my eyes
Talkin' 'bout love, talkin' 'bout love, talkin' 'bout

Factory air-conditioned, heat begins to rise
Guaranteed to run for hours, mama, let me pull your tires
Talkin' 'bout love, talkin' 'bout love, talkin' 'bout

Groovin' on the freeway, gauge is on the red
Gun down on my gasoline, believe I'm gonna crack your head
Talkin' 'bout love, talkin' 'bout love, I'm talkin' 'bout
I can't stop talkin' about, I can't stop talkin' about
Oooh, yeah, yes, a-drive on

Oooh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yes, I'm comin' through
Come to me for service every hundred miles
Baby, let me check your points, fix your overdrive
Talkin' 'bout love, I'm talkin' 'bout love, I'm talkin' 'bout

Ooh, yes, fully automatic, comes in any size
Makes me wonder what I did before we synchronized
Talkin' 'bout lo-ove, talkin' 'bout love, I'm talkin' 'bout

Ooh-ooh, feather-light suspension -- Konis couldn't hold
I'm so glad I took a look inside your showroom doors
Talkin' 'bout love, talkin' 'bout low-oh-hove, talkin' 'bout
I can't, I can't, oh, I can't stop talkin' about love
I can't stop talkin' about love

Ooh, let me come down, come down
Comin' down, comin' down, come down, yes
I can't stop talkin' about
I can't stop talkin' about lo-ove, baby
I can't stop talkin' about love, a-my baby
I can't stop talkin' about love, my baby-ah
My baby, my baby, yeah
Push, push, push, push, yes, push, push
Ooooh

Kashmir
Led Zeppelin
(Physical Graffiti)

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear
Oh, oh.

Oh, I been flying... mama, there ain't no denyin'
I've been flying, ain't no denyin', no denyin'

All I see turns to brown, as the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I've been.

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream
Heed the path that led me to that place, yellow desert stream
My Shangri-La beneath the summer moon, I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high in June, when movin' through Kashmir.

Oh, father of the four winds, fill my sails, across the sea of years
With no provision but an open face, along the straits of fear
Ohh.

When I'm on, when I'm on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you stay-yeah

Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, when I'm down...
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, well I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oooh, my baby, let me take you there

Let me take you there. Let me take you there

That's probably their best song IMO. I love it. It's not my favorite, but it's their most diverse and innovative. If I had to make a list of the best Zep songs ever, here's the list:

  1. Kashmir
  2. Stairway To Heaven
  3. Trampled Underfoot
  4. D'yer Mak'er
  5. The Rain Song
  6. No Quarter
  7. Black Dog
  8. Rock And Roll
  9. Whole Lotta Love
  10. I'm Gonna Crawl

Thanks.

And I hate to make this an all Zep thread, but am I the only one who thinks "No Quarter" is the creepiest rock song ever?

Close the door, put out the light
Y'know they won't be home tonight, oh-whoa-whoa-oh
The snow falls hard, and don't y'know
the winds of Thor are blowin' cold
They're wearin' steel that's bright and true, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
They carry news that must get through
They choose the path where no one goes

They hold no quarter, they, they hold no quarter
Uhh-uh-uh, uh-uh, uhh-huh

Walkin' side-by-side with death
The Devil mocks their every step, ooh, ooh-ooh
The snow drives back the foot that's slow
The dogs of doom are howlin' more, oh, oh-oh
They carry news that must get through
to build a dream for me and you, aw-whoa-whoa
They choose the path where no one goes, oh-oh, ooh-ooh

They hold no quarter, they ask no quarter
They hold no quarter, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, they ask no quarter
Ahh, ahh, ah-ah-ah-ha, ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah
Oh, the pain, the pain without quarter, oh, ho, oh, oh, oh
They ask no quarter/Ah, yeah, without quarter, quarter, quarter
They need no quarter/Won't they give me no
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ha-ah-ah ha-ah, ha-ha/
Dogs of doom are howlin' more, give me quarter
I hear the dogs of doom a-howlin' more

Pray For Death by Heathen

Conquering the ages with their endless plan
Threatening the future of the new world man
Ultra technology in our wake
Who will make the last mistake
Billions are espent for our defence
To protect our freedom at our expense
For us to exist we must live as one
Divide the wealth to feed everyone

The future is blind in the political eye
Bringing us down with their nuclear guides
It'll be too late when they finally see the light
Filling our heads with economical lies
Refusing to hear the people cry
Leaving no choise but to pray for death

The government builds machines that kill
And they use out money against our will
When will they build a means of peace
And maybe the future can live with ease
And what about the churches and all their wealth
There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display

Organized religion is deaf, dumb and blind
They think they see through God's eyes
It'll be too late when they finally see the light
If the pope would sell his robes of silk
He could provide the hungry milk
Leaving no reason to pray for death

They feed us the future through subliminal blinds
But we know the stories and we know the rhymes
So look in the mirror and see the lines
For it's just a picture seen through their eyes, eyes, eyes

Future Tense by Sanctuary

What do you see on the news when you watch T.V.
War in the name of God, or a playground killing spree
Politicians promise you the world, and a preacher cries
All he ever wanted was your money, and a ***** on the side
What went wrong? Did society twist him?

What do you see in the center of the public eye
Rock stars on smack, and a serial killer fries
Radicals blame suicide and murder on our form of art
Brainwash the youth, you know they claim we all play a part
What a shame that they can't think for themselves

Past tense to future tense let history unfold
So ends a decade now what will the nineties hold
You know we're verging on the edge of an age
Then another century will turn the page

What do you think they will say when they look back on this
Were the eighties just a time of spoiled innocence
We leave our legacy like dust in the sands of time
Let's hope the seeds we plant can carry the weight of our crimes

Past tense to future tense let history unfold
And when we're old and gray these stories will be told
You know we're verging on the edge of an age
Then another century will turn the page

We sail an ocean, a sea of doubt
Skeptics make no sense, can't work things out
I'll choose optimism, scream its name
Look to the future, a burning flame

Past tense to future tense let history unfold
So ends a decade now what will the nineties hold
You know we're verging on the edge of an age
Then another century will turn the page
Turn the page.....

Why I Don't Believe In God - Everclear

I heard the truth about you
And it really doesn't read at all
Like the whipping stick you raised me with
A scared woman in a private hell
Hushed voice like electric bell
Strange talk about Edgar Cayce and the long lame walk of the dark 70's
Strange talk about Edgar Cayce and the long lame walk of the dark 70's

I heard the truth about you
Yeah you
Mama they woke me up
I was deep in an idiot sleep
I was just eight years old
Heard big words with a horrible sound
Why'd they have to call my school
Tell me my mother had a nervous breakdown

I wish I believed like you do
Yeah you
In the myth of a merciful god
In the myth of a heaven and hell
I hear the voices you hear sometimes
Sometimes it gets so much I feel like letting go
Sometimes it gets so much I feel like letting go
Sometimes it gets so goddamn hard I feel like letting it all go

Letting it all go

I ran away, went looking for you
Back to Culver City and the old neighborhood
Need to know if you were really gone
Need to know if you were gone for good
I ran through the projects at night
Hide in the dark from my friends in the light
Hide from my brother-in-law
Hide from the things he'd say
Said you weren't losing your mind
He said you just needed a rest
He said you'd be coming home soon
He said the doctors there would know what's best
Said that maybe I could go live with them for a while

I know the truth about you
I know the truth
I know the truth
I know the truth about you

Mama they woke me up
I was just eight years old
Sometimes it gets so hard I feel like letting it go
Sometimes it gets so hard I feel like letting it go

Letting it all go
