Just came back from seeing the film. Jaw-dropping effects, great dialogue, awesome story, and Robert Downey Jr. proving that he was indeed perfect for the role. . At the very end of the film, I'm close to standing up and cheering. That is, until the very last line announced by Tony Stark... "I am Iron Man". .."WHAT"??? Part of the intriguing aspects of a superhero is their "secret identity". The reason they have one is to not only protect their civilian private lives, but also the lives of their loved ones as well. First they can't keep Spider-Man's mask on, and now this??? Why can't these film makers understand this simple fact? Aside from that "bungling mistake", I thought that Iron Man was one of the greatest superhero "epics" I've ever seen. And yes, he "CAN" fly.....:woot:

1) Everyone knows who he is in the comics.

2) "Loved ones"? WHAT loved ones?

3) Why make this like every OTHER comicbook movie out there? Why not think outside the box for once?

yes i thought the same thing.

this movie was very well done and i thought the "feel" was true to the comics.

but the fact that tony stark spills the beans is just frustrating.

IM's like the only movie hero who people know he really is. Only the villians know who SM is & they all die. Except Sandman & "probably" Venom, but that's another discussion.

That's what makes it decent, and basically just gives a big middle finger to all those comic flick cliches where the heroes hide in secret, and constantly have to avoid being found out. Dude's already got a massive security system, among other things, so villains that may know who he is and where he is will have a hell of a time trying to get to him, or even beat him.

If they can skip ahead to the modern armor, why not skip all the body guard stuff and make it like it is now in the comics? I like the idea.

For all the time I've read ppl know who Tony Stark is... I enjoy the idea

First, why do we need a separate topic for this? Secondly, it's a great turn. If you want a movie where the hero has to awkwardly balance his public and private identity, watch Spider-man.

i agree. it's a change of pace from the norm.......

the only question is.....how will this affect Tony Stark going forward in the sequels?

now that the goverment knows IM's identity, and
Stark's conversation with Nick Fury from Shield,
IM could be more of a "government-sanctioned" hero.

Not saying IM will become a "puppet," but more of a hero who operates out in the open and on the side of the law/government. Especially if the threats become global in nature, as the sequel seems to suggest with the "10 rings" organization......

The way I saw it was that Tony Stark couldnt resist saying it and he could easily retract it as a joke anyway, his press conferences being a bit hit and miss anyway, they wouldnt know if they should believe him or not. I liked that he did it, made a refreshing change.

He goes public (eventually) in the comics as well. yes, technically they could have gone a wile with the body guard cover, but that was always a bit cheesy and they just skipped the middle man. Good for them, it was awesome. And as said, we have the "protecting loved ones" side with Spider-Man and Batman already in movies. Besides the only real loved one that needs protecting for Stark is Potts and she practically lives with him. His mansion has tight security I'm sure and will likely get tighter in the sequel (Stark Tower, anyone?).

Also, to be fair to the Spidey movies, I do recall Iron Man's mask getting knocked off in the climax so we could see RDJ's face during the fighting.

That was hilarious! Iron Man doesn't have a secret identity...& the way he said it fits really well with the character. I thought it was a brilliant way to end the film.

I liked that he revealed his identity. I think Iron Man is the first superhero movie where the hero reveals his identity to the public.

And also not because he was forced to, he just felt like it! :woot:

interesting choice. i'm surprised they went with that route instead of the typical secret identity way, even if the world knows who he is.

I didn't get a sense that Tony just revealed himself as Iron Man, to me it just seemed as if he said it to get more gossip of him and that way the media hounds would always be doubting his every move.

After all Tony himself jokingly admits that he would never be a superhero.

that was my first reaction...that right at the beginning of the next movie, we'll have him deny it. especially since they "cut off" the movie. this reminded me of sopranos. gets people to talk.

i really thought it was cool when iron man revealed his identity i think that it really fits within his character

and plus-nice way to end a movie plus a sequel

No. It is clearly meant to have one intent. A ****ing hilarious send off to a fun summer movie where this character, obviously your anti-superhero, says "Okay, so I'm Iron Man. What you gonna do about it?" to paraphrase the tone.

And end it with the audience laughing.

Being a big fan of the comics I didn't mind it. Not to mention aside from Rhodes, Pepper and Hogan he doesn't have any real family to protect.

I thought they did it well in the film. With him talking to the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, saying it's his bodyguard sounded kind of flimsy and fake. That and when he talks to Pepper right after, was a quick and funny slap to the face of all the other superhero films were they try to hide their identities because of loved ones.

It was like this in the comics, no problem here. I also think its about time to have a heroe whos not afraid to come out in the opeaning about his idenity. Every heroe always keeps it a secret, this way for Tony he doesn't have to worry about the pupblic and the villains are the only guys Tony really has to deal with and who the heck cares about them? LOL. But yah seriously I feel they did a superb job with the ending.

The ending was Perfect.

Iron Man/Tony Stark is publicly known. I wasn't shocked and was actual hoping they would make him public.

The ending to this movie was simply refreshing. It's nice that someone tried something DIFFERENT for once!

No obligatory kiss between the lady and the hero, and no secret identity. I was impressed with that.

well Fantastic four don't hide it either. i actually liked that also. i don't think it was necessarily a slap to other superheroes, but he was following the comics. nicely done.
