Bishop2 said:Anyone who takes the law into their own hands is a vigilante. Superman is technically a vigilante, because he's out there trying to bust up criminals despite the fact that he's not legally charged with the agility to seek out crime and arrest people and whatnot. Hell, there was a whole plot arc on "Lois & Clark" about how the local D.A. wanted to kick his ass for that.
Many of the heroes of pulp fiction, such as Doc Savage and The Shadow, and comic book superheroes such as Batman and Daredevil have at various times been considered to be vigilantes due to their actions being self-motivated, and while generally aimed at the "good" result of bringing evil-doers to justice, being done outside the scope of what is permitted under the law.
I'm not saying that Spidey isn't "technically" a vigilante, but the majority of the public does not see him as such. Vigilante (while not necessarily "bad") is most often given a somewhat negative connotation. Most people see Spidey as a masked defender. A masked hero.
