It's not fact. It's an interpretation. One that people now seem to accept. Doesn't mean it's the end all, be all of Joker creation. And frankly, we have no idea what Nolan's doing with his Joker as of now.

In every version of the Joker's origin, his backstory has changed from being a family man with a wife and children to being a mob hitman, but one thing has always remained the same, and it's him falling into a vat of chemicals and it permanently bleaching his skin.

In every Bruce Wayne origin, his parents are always killed. In every Joker origin, he has fallen into a vat of chemicals and come out with bleached skin. Nay?

Yeah, actually, it is.

It was created 30 years before Alan Moores"I can't remember" bull. At the time of its creation, it was meant to be the 100% canon, definitive explanation for the Joker's appearance. And in every subsequent origin, it was the same: a criminal who escapes custody by leaping into a vat of toxic chemicals, causing his skin to be bleached white and his hair dyed green.

If it's never been anything other, why assume it's "just an interpretation" like it's some dumb fan theory?

I respect purists but I respect Nolan even more, he has earned his shot at the Joker.

He's not just any nut. It's still the Joker. Exact same personality. Only difference is that actually applies makeup. He's still a killer with no sense of guilt or morals. He enjoys killing. He's a sadist. How is that any less Joker than if hee had simply fallen into chemicals?

You must not read many Batman comics featuring the Joker.

The Joker is a lost soul, his skin being bleached was the last straw. He has no mask to take off, he will always be stuck in that body. One thing he never understands about Batman is that he has a choice and why he does what he does. After a night of crime fighting, Batman can wake up and take off his mask and become Bruce Wayne and live a normal life. It's the complete opposite for The Joker. The Joker sees in himself that he has no choice, he is stuck that way, completely unlike Batman. For The Joker, being bleached was the point of no return.

If I can get my girlfriends printer/scanner hooked up to my laptop, I'll personally scan the issue of Detective Comics 168 "The Man Behind The Red Hood". In it Joker tells Batman face to face that it was him under the Red Hood outfit and that he fell into the chemicals. He named himself the Joker because he was escaping his goal, of stealing from The Monarch Playing Card Company. He kinda blames the company for "making" his new face so he named himself after the card with the clown, the Joker. He also says "At home I looked at myself with growing horror..." "Then, I realized my new face could terrify people!"

Hope this helps nickyg641 with your argument. :yay:

I personally have a very open mind on the subject. Granted, I've only ever known the Joker as having white skin, but this is a very interesting take on the character.

You see, I'm a huge fan of the Ultimate Marvel Universe. For those that don't know about it (as if), it's a seperate continuity that has virtually every Marvel character reinvented for modern audiences. The characters and the stories are grounded in a much deeper sense of realism, even the god like characters. I'm a huge fan of these books, as it's a new and creative take on my favorite characters while still keeping the spirit the same.

Which brings me to the portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight. I'm imagining it in my head....

A cold, sadistic killer with a warped sense of reality and a truly demented sense of humor, easily amused with the death and fear of others. No morals, no feelings that could be considered rational human thought. This psychopath is horribly disfigured at the corners of his mouth, resulting in what looks like a demonic grin. Amused by this, he takes this look a step further by making himself up to resemble a demonic clown, complete with red lipstick that goes up the lacerations and green dye in his hair. Using this face, he proceeds to carry out any actions that come to his diseased imagination. And the more people hurt, and the more people die as a result of his actions, the funnier it is to him, and the harder he laughs.

:wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow:

Wow, you can't tell me that isn't frickin scary. When I think about it like that, it makes a scary amount of sense, and it actually stays true and builds on the character while giving it a fresh spin. I applaude Chris Nolan for being brave enough to try something different while not betraying the character. I think Heath Ledger's Joker is probably going to be the best interpretation of the Joker that we've ever seen. I personally can't wait!

Well said Figgy.

Some people just seem to want to make the source material seem illegitimate.

Good post. I agree %100.

Only problem is my gf tends to lose **** and can't find the driver c.d. for her damn scanner. :cmad: :cmad: She's getting a black eye tonight.

Just kidding.:woot:

I liked the tattoo idea, would be cool if he had demonic tattoo's all over his face and applies make-up on them.

:ninja:  :ninja:

If he were to apply makeup to random demonic tattoo's, wouldn't that make the makeup on his face patchy and not complete?

Demonic tatoo on the Joker's face, like Darth Maul ? Wow, best villain ever and worst one in the same breath.

Fair argument, but...

...there's that sympathy I was talking about. You may like that puppy dog-eyed, "Why don't you understand me?" Joker, but I don't. I like my Joker ruthless, chilling, and with a completely soulless face, even when he smiles. Just like he was in Batman #1. Perfect contrast to his outward clownish appearance.

Very well said.

demonic tattoos and puts powder on them................................

I hope the Joker applies make up on Batman and makes him his b***h.

I still don't understand why he would put White UP his nose. Perhaps it was just an artistic choice by the Makeup Artists for it to appear more complete.

Are you talking about Scarface or the Joker ?

Exactly. They're trying to convince the audience the Joker has flesh coloured skin. Make-up in the ears and nose is necessary for the effect but it requires a suspension of belief. AFTER the twist is revealed the shock will be all that matters, audiences won't really care or even think about going to back to consider how Joker made his disguise so convincing.

Hmmm...

I think the joker puts on pink skin.

But... WHat foundation does he use... Rimmel or Chanel?

Whichever one he thinks will lure Bruce into the Jokermobile for a game of Jack-in-the-box.

Actually, I don't think that, if he does wear flesh-tone makeup, it's really that strategically placed. I mean, think about it: if he applies flesh-toned makeup to his face and ears, and washes it off sloppily, some of it is going to remain. Especially since he would tend not to get every bit of every crevace of his ears and nostrils.

Or at least that's how I'd explain bits of flesh-colored makeup. Not necessarily strategically placed, but remnants from a bad wash-off.

I mean, Joker is a freak. Everyone can see that. Why should this be a drama and shock people that his real skin color is white?

Because that makes him even more of a freak, even more inhuman, and is a rather interesting twist.

No, I just don't see that. Besides it's nice to hear that you think people born with a real white skin (there live some people on this planet) are inhuman...
