Identifying a geek/nerd

I don't know about anyone else, but lately I've been hearing the words "geek" and "nerd" being tossed around by pretty much everybody when they're describing themselves; and it seems to me that people sometimes say that they're a geek/nerd just so people won't think of them as being a complete *******.

So is there a way to tell if someone is REALLY as much of a geek/nerd as they say they are?

Geek - anyone who geeks out over something
Nerd - bad social skills, nerdy looking

That is how I see it on a top level

oh, i do that :(

second question: what would you say was nerdy looking?

yer my friend calls this a nerd forum and she says im a nerd but she loves me... :D

theres no point denying what u like because its not cool.

yup :)

my boyfriend loves me for who i am and i love him for who he is..

he introduced me to Manga and Anime. :D which was the basis for me getting into art which is what i am now studying at college :D

Exactly.

But, first date conversation shouldn't be which is better Star Wars or Star Trek or who could win Batman vs. Superman. :o

I'm a semi-geek. I do get excited about stupid things like movie casting and comic books, but I also know the point of when it starts to get weird and then I stop.

Sometimes it's harder to identify a true geek/nerd than you might think, though. I for instance am an enormous sci-fi/fantasy nerd (among many other geekdoms) but I don't (always) look the part in public. I think that many people (if they notice me at all) just think of me as a studious girl that doesn't talk much.

So it think it may be true that a defining characteristic of many true geeks is just being a shy or quiet person. But then again, that's certainly not universal; there are many geeks who are very talkative (actually, I think that most geeks are very talkative if you put them in a group with other people as geeky as them).

I lost track of where I was going with this post, so suffice to say, if you see someone on the street that doesn't look geeky, it's entirely possible that you are wrong and that they are very geeky.

I don't look the part at all and sometimes it shocks people when they bring up a subject dealing with Sci-Fi or Super Heros. Then I geek out like a champ and leave little doubt.:woot:

Ok...

I'm into cool and wierd music... know little bit more than general stuff about music, films, books, art..

I love comics.. my name is from a character in Sandman and not a major one.. I know my stuff and I try to catch up with the current events in the comic media... not so big as I was 3 years ago, though

I'm a gamer.. like video games.. computer games... big into Starcraft.. I'm into the whole internet culture (long cat is loooooooooooong)

I'm an anime freak... right now I know more anime than I used to know a year ago and back then I was heavy into anime... own a Naruto t-shirt... read many mangas religiously fresh from japan... I consider myself one of the Sannin of the Hype... along with oakzap... by the way, since I'm Jirajya, oakzap is Tsunade.. who would be Orochimaru?

I play dungeons and dragons... don't own my own ubber pimped out die yet, but I'm getting big into the lore (Eberron KICKS ASS)

I know my stuff in computers... some programming... I'm good at sciences.. heck.. my major is Bio Engineering

so... I could be a nerd.. but I'm not that smart... I'm probably a dork.. but I know how to fend for myself... I'm a geek, but I can get laid.. heck, I just broke up with my girlfriend and I have a couple of candidates for those lonely days...

I fit like a shoe in those three categories and I have my background and credentials to prove it... but then again, I'm my own category

Stereotypes suck

Being a geek/nerd doesn't mean doesn't mean you aren't unique. However: computers, D&D, comics= definite nerd/geek.

I get that. I always tell people that I'm a fountain of useless information.:woot:

I really don't know what I am. I work out regularly, I dress nice, I'm (usually) well-groomed, I smoke weed, I'm not a big drinker, I love comics, I hate CCGs and RPGs, I have a decent ammount of friends, most non-friends I find to be ****tards, I like Doctor Who and Star Wars, I hate Stargate and Star Trek.

I simply am me.

Bottom line like I say on every thread like this one that deals with stereo types is that everyone has bits of everything in them.

I'm a good looking guy, I dress like your average guy today, I'm 22 and have a full time job as a Database Administrator and am finishing up college. Don't have a girlfriend but hopefully soon. I collect Spider-man and Batman comics, have a declining interest in video games, and play the guitar. I love music, can't listen to the radio though. Metal and industrial are my genres. I love superhero movies, geek out over superheros and music. Anime, not so much, but I find it interesting usually when I do watch it...never really take the time to actively watch it.

I don't know what I am. I do know I don't have a grilfriend because Im picky. I've had plenty of girls who I could go out with but I'm always looking at the girl that gives me butterflies who I never can get to. Its always someone who I see in a hallway, or is talking to a group of people. There have only been about 5 girls I actually met in college who I would go out with 3 had boyfriends, the others didnt work out.
