IDW Transformers Comics

Oh, man... where to start?

Let's see:

-Transformers vol.1 by Mike Costa and Don Figueroa- Costa's run (which culminates with the current Chaos storyline) starts here. It's a very interesting take, where we see the Autobots and Decepticons as they struggle to deal with a war that's all but come to an end. If you enjoy it, check out vols. 2 and 3.

-Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers is a really fun romp, and a lot of hardcore Transformers fans love it. The characters can be a little obscure, though, so I'd recommend this for the more hardcore TF fans. If you do enjoy it, check out IDW or Titan's TF UK reprints. The Wreckers made their debut there, and they actually have a very interesting history.

-The Transformers Spotlight books can be a mixed bag, but they tend to be self-contained, and would probably read quite nicely in a collected edition. My personal favorites are Spotlight: Galvatron, Spotlight: Blaster and Spotlight: Arcee.

-If you're a fan of the movies, I'd recommend The Reign of Starscream. It's a fun little "movie sequel." A couple of things don't line up perfectly with the films, but it does for the most part, and Alex Milne's art is gorgeous. I actually own a page of the original art.

-If you like Transformers Animated (a show I absolutely LOVED), check out the the mini/trade of that. It's written by one of the series' writers, and it features a bunch of fun little stories that fit in perfectly with the show. IDW also published a couple of books called the Allspark Almanacs. While not comics per se, these beautiful books show a lot of concept art and other fun things.

-IDW also reprinted nearly all of Dreamwave's comics. The best, in my opinion, are The War Within and More than Meets the Eye. The War Within isn't in IDW's current continuity, but it is a nice TF origin tale. MTMTE is a two volume collection of TF profiles. While some of the profiles also don't line up with the current continuity, they're very comprehensive, and a lot of fun.

Actually I kinda hated Transformers Animated. Really I was only a fan of that 80's series, although TF Prime is alright.

Do you know with Transformers: More than meets the Eye and Transformers: Robots in Disguise can you read one title without the other? My comic budget can't have two Transformer books in it. Someone at IDW said the two books would be closely tied but can you read them separate?

I would assume as much. The book is currently telling two different stories: one on Earth and one on Cybertron. I think it's safe to assume that that's where they'll split into two titles. The Earth stuff in one book, the space/Cybertron stuff in another.

If you're a fan of the old Marvel Comics run, I believe it's been confirmed that Simon Furman and Andrew Wildman will be continuing their old run with a brand new issue #81, as well.

Interesting. I wonder which book is which and what team members will be on each one. I guess we'll find out more after The death of Optimus Prime.

It's funny, I remember in the early to mid 90's I thought I was the only one who still loved Transformers. Now Transformers is almost bigger than Star Wars.

Here ya go:

Two New Series, One TRANSFORMERS Comics Universe
Thursday, Oct 20th, 2011
Debuting in January, the war for CYBERTRON is over. Now the hard part begins.

Perfect jumping-on point for new readers.

Launching in January, IDW Publishing is proud to offer TRANSFORMERS and comics fan everywhere two new ongoing TRANSFORMERS comics series, under license from Hasbro. The two, interrelated series are a direct continuation of IDW’s CHAOS event and the culminating issue, TRANSFORMERS: THE DEATH OF OPTIMUS PRIME, available in comic stores and online in December. Featuring two great stories under one IDW TRANSFORMERS universe, both comic series also offer a perfect place for new readers to join the series.

Written for both comics and TRANSFORMERS fans, TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE and TRANSFORMERS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE each explore the aftermath of IDW’s CHAOS event.

The war is over, and now the hard part begins. In the new world of CYBERTRON, there are only two choices: stay or go.

Helmed by writer John Roberts with art and covers by Nick Roche, AUTOBOT RODIMUS calls on his fellow TRANSFORMERS to leave CYBERTRON in search of the Knights of CYBERTRON in TRANSFORMERS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE. This lost tribe of TRANSFORMERS is, according to legend, the guardians of the original Cybertronian culture and RODIMUS and his followers begin a quest to find them and restore their culture to its past glory.

TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE, written by IDW’s own John Barber, with art and covers by Andy Griffith, follows BUMBLEBEE and the remaining AUTOBOTS on CYBERTRON. Without OPTIMUS PRIME, BUMBLEBEE finds himself in command of a world gone mad. TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DIGUISE follows the struggle to rebuilding CYBERTRON as the AUTOBOTS, DECEPTICONS and civilian TRANSFORMERS, who don’t distinguish between the other two groups, are all vying for control.

Each series will feature four interconnecting covers for issue #1. Marcele Matere creates the Cybertronian mosaic for TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DIGUISE, with Alex Milne bringing the explorers to life for TRANSFORMERS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE.
