... Could you handle it? Would you care?

This is obviously a silly "What if?" scenario, and the responses always fascinate me, so here's the scenario more in depth.

- No new movies are released in theaters for 2 years.
- Old classic movies are brought back to the theater during those 2 years.
- Would you be mad by the absence of new movies?
- Would you be excited to see old classics on the big screen for the first time?

And here's a bonus just for kicks:

The reason for the absence of new movies was so producers and writers could take 2 years in order to spend extra time making higher quality films.

In my opinion? I'm a huge movie buff, and I'd be perfectly fine with this scenario. In fact, it pains me that it will never happen.

What say you?

There would be an awful lot of people out of work for two years.

No. I have HBO, Cinemax(But thats mostly for porn), starz, etc to watch old classic movies. I like going to the movies to see new movies that I can waste two hours into. I can watch Friday or Saving Private Ryan or any other classic movies at home. I would not go to the theater during those 2 years.

2 years? Hell, I could handle 5. None of this stuff is essential, IMO. They never have been. There are plenty of books I could be reading instead.

I would handle it because I have pretty good patience. But I would get mad anyway. It doesnt make sense, why would making two years doing nothing get better ideas. Great writers doesnt force themselves writing stories and if they are not happy with it they spend more time. It took Tarantino 10 years to write Inglourious Basterds.

I would hate it initally. But after a while I'd get over myself and start watching the classic movies or read a damn book.

I reckon it'd give people the chance to enjoy world cinema, which actually produces lots of high quality stuff people don't notice.

an average world cinema film is generally better than most hollywood blockbusters or big hitting films

^ I am likeminded. It's just not serious.

I feel like it would give me a chance to catch up on stuff I haven't seen yet, but that's about it.

I think it would be terrible for the industry and economy. It might help blu ray/dvd sales though. Also a two year hiatus isn't going to fix everything. It would just be a delay of good and bad films.

I agree with bullets

This would be a bad sign for Hollywood. Not only the significant decline has been predicted for years already, but if it actually happens, I will be both pissed and happy.

Why pissed off? Well, that's quite obvious, as the biggest film industry in the world digs a hole for itself.

Why happy though? Because it will give enough chance for independent movie making to rise, which I will surely applaud!

Ah, but no movies from Hollywood does not mean no movies. Many of my favorite filmmakers would still be working or at least still be able to work if Hollywood shut down for 2 years.

Now, my answer is: Yes, I could handle it. It would be difficult, though. It's cool to hate Hollywood, especially if you're a "film person," which I am. Hollywood puts out enough really good films each year to justify its existence - maybe not exactly its current business model, but its existence.

- Would you be mad by the absence of new movies?

I don't know about "mad," but it'd be a major, frustrating adjustment. There are too many movies, though, every year, not just in Hollywood but in general. And I love cinema, I truly do - but there are too many movies.

- Would you be excited to see old classics on the big screen for the first time?

I think there should be more rereleases of classic films put into wide theatrical release than there are these days, so I would be happy about that. Depends on the films, of course, but for example, I'd love to see Burton's Batman on the big screen - I never have - or Goodfellas, or Ben-Hur, or Terminator 2, or the original King Kong, or so many more.

I barely go to movies as it is. Yes, I've seen many of the newer superhero movies and a bunch of the other sci-fi/fantasy stuff, but really that stuff's just a drop in the bucket as far as the total amount of movies out each year. I wouldn't notice really.

Another two years I'll have to wait for a new Del Toro project. :(

I see maybe 4 or 5 movies a year in the theater. Yeah. I could handle a 2 year drought. Easy.

I find it hard to believe that so much people on this board would be okay with this. This board is essentially all about movies, comic book or not, but movies nonetheless.

And no I wouldn't be okay with it. I probably watch 4-5 movies a year too but most of the time it is an enjoyable experience and to be deprived of that just because horrible writers need two years to try to make a better story is ridiculous. I already watch classic and foreign films. I also love to read a lot (watching 5 movies at the the theater over a year ain't gonna deprive you of significant reading time people, lol...thats only about 10 hours a year) so the change wouldn't do much for me especially given that I probably wouldn't be paying movie theater prices for a movies I could just watch on dvd

when you say 4 movies in a year you mean in theater right? you watch new movies ahome also right?

Yes, I do watch them at home too but in the theaters its usually around 5 times a year (sometimes even less than that).

i think I can...I would actually spend some time and watch the classics I have never seen.

I think they should start next year. :awesome: But no, I wouldn't mind five years off from Hollywood releases.

I'd be fine with it...heck, most of the movies that come out I am fine with not seeing ever or waiting for DVD. :)

If classic movies were released instead, I'd go to the movies more often. Hundreds of movies are made every year, but the amount of any that are actually good is a lot smaller. Good movies invoke your emotions and a movie theater amplifies your experience watching them. Everything is bigger, so your response is bigger.

I'd love to see films I've only watched on video on the big screen. I'm sure it would make me like them even more. Billy Bats' beating would be more brutal, Tony Montana's gun would be louder, Batman would be more striking, etc.
