IGN Releases HD Trailer! And New Posters!

i think in one interview in 2003 they said that the final burly brawl was insipired by DB a lot.
the big balls that were created when smith punches neo was IMO inspired by DBZ.

i think those explosions were influenced by anime in general. that's an anime cliche'.

Yeah, the big shockwaves when two big forces clash.

Personally, the fight in Matrix didn't remind me of DBZ in the least. It was just a lot of flying around and clashing into each other. More of a Superman fight than DBZ.

i thought of DBZ when i saw it, but only for a few seconds. i was too busy enjoying the movie to linger on that thought. however, now that i've seen it on video over and over again, it's only a little bit DBZ-ish. they don't have the lightning fast movements that DBZ does.

still, i think the Wachowski's could have pulled it off if they wanted to.

of course its not 100% like DBZ. but the fact that you think about it is prroof that they used ideas.
i think a lot of DB fans after matrix revolution wanted a movie. come on. in 2003 we were there with the technology to make a DB movie.

the way it looks like in DB there wont be any fighting in air. it looks like goku is firing the kamehameha in the air. so i think piccolo is flying. but nto goku.

Overall, I like the trailer.

It seems the film will have good action and cool ki blasts. Marsters seems to have perfected Piccolo (he is a proper Dragonball fan and had a good understanding of the character before he signed up), the bike transforming looked cool as well as Mai transforming. The kamehameha also looked epic, real feel of energy and power in that scene.

What I didn't like was Goku saying "Cool" and the character titles.

And on the origin of the Dragonballs being changed. They way I think they have handled it is as follows:

The "gods from the sky" are the Nameks, Kami is one of them. Isn't he Earth's god? Now Kami's evil side is Piccolo right. Kami's personality changes to Piccolo who has evil intentions and tries to destroy Earth or whatever. Kami then seperates Piccolo from his body and locks him away in prison in that urn thing. Kami along with six other mystics create the Dragonballs to protect Earth incase something happens again. Piccolo escapes from his prison and wants the Dragonballs to take over Earth and get his revenge, main objective to kill Kami and the other mystics.

Dunno just a guess. I haven't really seen the Dragonball anime so just have some vague general knowledge about the Piccolo saga.

yeah, the Wachowski's are the new kings of action as far as i'm concerned. they're pretty good story tellers as well.

Would it be fair to say that Goku in the DB film is a lot like Neo in The Matrix?

I think it's funny that if you removed the dragonballs from the posters, there would be absolutely nothing left of DragonBall.

not really. for one, Neo was born into his destiny and had to find a way to break out of it, while Goku was practically in control of his since he was able to walk. two, i can actually believe Keanu could kick someone's ash while i don't feel the same for Chatwin. yeah they have similarities (monotone speech, able to do superhuman feats, black hair, etc.) but i wouldn't say that they're a LOT a like. maybe a LITTLE a like.

regardless, i think the Wachowski's would've done their homework and realized that Goku isn't supposed to be like Neo.

They both had a choice. Neo knew full well what he was getting into, but pursued it anyway. Same with Goku. Both are unsure of themselves. Both have some latent power. You believed Keanu could be a fighter prior to The Matrix? You're in the minority.

which is negated by the fact that he wasn't truly 'the one' but rather ONE of 'the ones' and that this process had been going on for centuries. just because he chose the right pill doesn't mean he wouldn't or couldn't have eventually found his way out of the Matrix.

okay, what about movie Goku and movie Speed Racer? they're not exactly that much a like, yet the Wachowski's were able to bring Speedy to the big screen as a believable character.

You believed Keanu could be a fighter prior to The Matrix?
no and i never said anything like that. i said that i could believe that Keanu could kick someone's @$$. i never said that he actually could. i know that the Matrix was his first exposure to martial arts choreography.

You're in the minority.
please don't ASSume that you know me.

great points Dorky, I couldn't agree with you more that they will indeed make a good stylized Dragonball movie...

I loved Speed Racer, I though it had heart, and it was very unique, it's like Speed
Racer is it's own entity but the majority didn't want to accept this entity

When did I say I he couldn't make his way out? I said he made the choice, implying it wasn't fate, but his own personal decision.

I didn't see Speed Racer, so you've got me there.

And I'm saying that you being able to picture that pre-Matrix is pretty rare. Most people could only picture Ted Logan, even if they did see him in Speed. I can't count how many news articles I read where they made a Bill and Ted reference. Action is one thing, but Keanu doing martial arts was an entirely different ball park for a lot of people.

It's apparent that you don't know what minority means.

I also loved Speed Racer, and it's quickly becoming a cult favorite. Unfortunately though, it was panned by critics and no-one went to see it, so in a way Fox is kind of justified for taking a step back with Dragonball and making it more reality-grounded. However, as you can tell from the trailer this is hardly "realism." The DB movie still looks like it's got a lot of fantasy going on within its world, and it looks a lot more colorful than most blockbusters that are out these days. It's a compromise, and hopefully it's one that will work out for the better.

I think making DBE into a more reality-based movie is a terrible idea. Dragonball was originally conceived with ideas from both the Chinese literature Journey to the West and Superman, among others, so I think straying from its fantasy roots is a bad decision.

Bulma looks tougher than Goku. I know Goku is a happy go lucky kinda guy but he looks like a wimp.

Oh snap doesnt this end the age old question on what race Goku is? I mean if the creator wanted him to be Asian I am sorry but that in itself is preety telling but then again he did want an all Asian cast. I cant imagine he will be pleased with the end result.
Only complete morons with racist undertones care what race Goku is.

They could make him black, who cares? He's not even human, so it doesn't matter about his skin colour, and as for heritage, he's obviously had an Asian upbringing via Gohan.

It was a pretty boneheaded move yes, but we have to see where it goes. Like Dorky stated, I do believe the Wachowski's would have delivered a far better film based on what they did with the matrix trilogy, being that it did draw alot of influences from anime itself. Maybe if this first film warrants a sequel which im pretty sure it may, hopefully another director helms the project. We are viewing Fox and Steven Chow's vision of DB, so they may see something totally different.

This film was in production and filming long before Speed Racer came out, the look of the film is simply Fox just been Fox.

Racist undertones? Its more like peoples interpretation, I think the "morons" are the people who think people wont view Goku's ethnicity as Asian. Just look at the theme of Dragonball it bascilly screams Asian culture, not only that but the story was inspired by journey to the west and the character Goku is based on the monkey king. Oh no what morons I mean this manga seems asian themed so we logically assume the main character is Asian.

I have black friends who would be saying "what the heck?" if they saw Son Goku was a black dude. Same thing goes for Tom Cruise playing the Black Panther. Look at the reaction to Sam Jackson playing Nick Fury in Iron Man. We can talk all day about how race doesn't play a factor in the casting of fantasy characters, but that won't make it true.

I don't care that it's a white guy playing Goku. What I do care about, however, is the fact that they're calling a Luke Skywalker in orange gi Goku.

i jsut watched the trailer and omfg....this movie is going to suck ass, only positive thing i can say is the female actresses look hot....

i was the biggest dragon ball fan back when i was a kid, i feel soo ashamed at this movie...
