Superman Returns "I'm still Superman!" Dialogue questions in the Kryptonite beating sequence

The Guard said:
The cadence of whatever he's saying doesn't match up to "those were a gift from my father. You took them from me". Remotely. Nor would this be a logical moment to have him say that. I can definitely make out something that both has the cadence and sounds like "No! Aghh/I-I'm still Superman" when he is first being dragged. Then a staccato, muffled "Still SupermaGHHH", or something along those lines.

Whatever. I'm not going to argue over this. The cadence...whatever. I can make it out quite clearly. So where does that leave us?

Btw, it's also illogical for him to say, "I'm still Superman" in that scene since Luthor says nothing that would question that fact.

But whatever, this is an silly thread.

I agree with Bosef. The point of the scene is that Luthor stole Superman's crystals so it would make sense for him to say that.

I mean that's why he really sort of goes there, besides to stop Luthor...and we saw that he could've just lifted New Krypton from its seams....

I really don't understand the context of saying that line in this scene. I choose not to dig that deep into all artistic intepretations. Besides, we're breaking down something that is being mumbled.....You guys have fun.

I'm sorry, I didn't hear what you were saying -- can you stop mumbling? :woot:

"Don't you know I don't speak Spanish!"

Subtitles on DVD's often differ to what is actually said by the characters in the movies themselves. Personally, i dont think he said the word 'Superman' once in the scene, but thats just me.

Actually, finally watching it again last night, he definately DOES say "I'm still Superman!

I bought a copy of Superman Returns yesterday so I'll have to check this out...

The man speaks the truth i think guys like him are needed on here, ignore this worthless jibe matt and stick around.

I am not sure what you mean?

I honestly could'nt make out at all what he was saying but it is possible that its a easter egg for those who would try and figure it out or something Brandon just yelled during the scene so he was'nt just yelling and screaming incoherently

He definately, defintately says 'I'm still Superman!' for the first sentence

It certainly sounds to me like, "I'm still Superman!"

Now.....why would he say that?

I think he would say it to Lex as a kind of threat, as if to say 'you can do what you want to me but i am still superman and you will never beat me down,' at least, thats how i see it.

I think it also makes more sense of Lex saying "So long...Superman." in a mocking tone.

Because he saw Catman's "Forget Routh, Bring back Dean Cain" thread.

Something I just noticed watching the DVD last night: In the New Krypton beating sequence in SUPERMAN RETURNS, I had thought that Superman was just screaming in pain when he was being dragged by the head, but according to the subtitles, he actually yells "I'm still Superman!" as he's being dragged by his head and beaten by Luthor and the thugs. Then he starts yelling things like "Come on! Get up!", apparently to himself (unless this is supposed to be Luthor yelling this at him, maybe to taunt him).

Anyone else noticed these lines? Not sure what the writers intended for this sequence. Is Superman trying to psyche himself up, even though he no longer has his great power due to the Kryptonite? And is this really neccessary dialogue?
I haven't recieved my Ultimate Collector's set yet but i rented the SR in the mean time and heard the same line pretty clearly. It kind makes you feel even more sorry for Supes than you already are.

I think he's saying, Luthor you can take away my powers, You can beat the **** out of me, But it doesn't matter I'm still SUPERMAN .

He definately says I'm Still Superman, and then "Come on, get up!" I actually really like these lines and it makes the scene even better IMO.

Yeah, he says it. I watched it last night with subtitles, then went back and yeah, you can hear it plain as day now that you know what it is he's saying.

But he doesn't say "come on, get up". I am pretty sure that's a thug that says that.

You're right, its the thug that says the 2nd part, and Superman is saying "I'm still Superman." Basically telling Luthor, no matter what you do to me, I'm still Superman. That can't be taken away, even if you beat me, drag me, or stab me.

Hhhhmmmm, i always thought it was Superman trying to will himself back up and to fight back, it sounds like Brandons voice and not any of the other guys' voices when you watch the rest of the movie, but you guys may be right.

No offense, but your suggestions are worse.
MAXIMUM OFFENSE! As I believe those suggestions to be quite awful.

I think its an error in the subtitles Guard. It's not the first time we've seen this...and oddly enough, the other place I've seen these is on the Matrix DVDs, also by WB.

I thought it was pretty clear that he said, "those were a gift from my father, you took them from me..." and not "I'm still Superman' which common sense would tell you has no relevance to that scene and just wouldn't be written in. Also, I'm still Superman doesn't last as long as it'd need to to fill in his mumbling in that scene; his voice rises and pitches multiple times insinuating multiple words.

It's a DVD error, most likely.

No, as others have also confirmed, he does say 'I'm still Superman'...

I watched it last night. Got the Ultimate Collector's Edition for free (yippee!) and will be working my way through it bit by bit. But I started by rewatching Superman Returns.

^Yep, isnt it strange how you can hear it so clearly on the DVD yet when watching it multiple times on the cinema you couldnt understand a word he was saying. Good line though.

I thought it was Lex yelling: "I hate you Superman"

perhaps it was something only added for the DVD version

^^I think it was. I doubt that line was in the script to begin with. If you watch the DVD, you see the guy who plays that thug that grabs Superman's face literally coming up with the idea of grabbing his face right on the spot. I feel like Singer probably added that line in after they shot that scene for added drama. I never heard that line in the theatre and saw it three times. Maybe someone else did though.

The line was not added for the DVD, he mumbles the same in the theater. The sequence of Superman being dragged by his face was not in the script as far as I can remember, nor was that line.
