So I have this friend.
Let me preface this whole story about him with his background. He is 35, going back to College (my College). He has a kid. He use to dabble in the occult. He is now a Christian, not quiet Evangelical, certainly doesn't believe in a historically infallible Bible. Although he bases (or as he says) his life philosophy on the Bible and is a Natural Right's philosopher when it comes to Politics.
The guy gets (had ) great grades. He has a kid and aspired to be a lawyer for Church groups to fight and make sure their rights were protected within the bounds of the Constitution. I certainly considered him a great friend, and great mind to converse with. He helped me study, get A's when I couldn't on my own. If I was Plato, he was certainly a Socrates. If I am Cyclops he is the closest thing to a Hank McCoy I have ever met.
That all comes crashing down two days ago. He goes off to Washington this semester for an internship program. He was having trouble finding a job (internship) there. However he had some promising options, the school just was slacking off on finding everyone involved internships apparently.
Two days ago, from what I understand, he went out to a bar with his roommates in Washington. They get him drunk, however not against his will. Apparently there was a person of Latino/Spanish origin in the bar (presumably he was another student involved in the internship program) and the two started to minse words, for whatever reason, and they got in a fight (fist fight). The fight however was not bad, and did not cause much trouble, however because of it they started screaming back and forth at each other. My friend, whose name is Chris BTW, called him a "Banana Picker" (a racial slur) in reference to his ethnicity and now he has been kicked off the trip, potentially may not be allowed back at school.
Now no one is more ashamed of his actions than I am, however, unlike my friends, I have not made light of his situation. I understand it better than they do. He screwed over, in essence, his entire life it seems...provided he gets no second chance.
I'm pretty torn up about it A) because I am very sensitive to racist comments B) because he is my friend, and always will be as far as I am concerned and C) because this really is the last thing he needs. Especially considering how it's one small mistake, brought on by alcohol influence, that ruins pretty much 2.5 years of hard work and effort. This doesn't excuse what he did though, which was bad (despite it being a pretty lame insult).
I won't call him for a week, he needs his time alone. But I do fear for him, his kid, as his life from here on out.
I'm torn.
