So I have this friend.

Let me preface this whole story about him with his background. He is 35, going back to College (my College). He has a kid. He use to dabble in the occult. He is now a Christian, not quiet Evangelical, certainly doesn't believe in a historically infallible Bible. Although he bases (or as he says) his life philosophy on the Bible and is a Natural Right's philosopher when it comes to Politics.

The guy gets (had:csad: ) great grades. He has a kid and aspired to be a lawyer for Church groups to fight and make sure their rights were protected within the bounds of the Constitution. I certainly considered him a great friend, and great mind to converse with. He helped me study, get A's when I couldn't on my own. If I was Plato, he was certainly a Socrates. If I am Cyclops he is the closest thing to a Hank McCoy I have ever met.

That all comes crashing down two days ago. He goes off to Washington this semester for an internship program. He was having trouble finding a job (internship) there. However he had some promising options, the school just was slacking off on finding everyone involved internships apparently.

Two days ago, from what I understand, he went out to a bar with his roommates in Washington. They get him drunk, however not against his will. Apparently there was a person of Latino/Spanish origin in the bar (presumably he was another student involved in the internship program) and the two started to minse words, for whatever reason, and they got in a fight (fist fight). The fight however was not bad, and did not cause much trouble, however because of it they started screaming back and forth at each other. My friend, whose name is Chris BTW, called him a "Banana Picker" (a racial slur) in reference to his ethnicity and now he has been kicked off the trip, potentially may not be allowed back at school.

Now no one is more ashamed of his actions than I am, however, unlike my friends, I have not made light of his situation. I understand it better than they do. He screwed over, in essence, his entire life it seems...provided he gets no second chance.

I'm pretty torn up about it A) because I am very sensitive to racist comments B) because he is my friend, and always will be as far as I am concerned and C) because this really is the last thing he needs. Especially considering how it's one small mistake, brought on by alcohol influence, that ruins pretty much 2.5 years of hard work and effort. This doesn't excuse what he did though, which was bad (despite it being a pretty lame insult).

I won't call him for a week, he needs his time alone. But I do fear for him, his kid, as his life from here on out.

I'm torn.

erm.....if that was enough to "ruin his life from here on out" then his life wasn't worth living anyway.

I've done wAaAaAay worse while blackedout drunk and my life is super.
Also, I'm curious to know if you thought the booze was "truth serum" when, say, Mel Gibson went on about the Jews while drunk.
Do you think your friend's a closet racist?
'Cause I know a lot of people who would say he is, and I'd say, he's probably not.
You get into a stressful situation where you feel attacked and you choose words in a split second that you feel would best express your contempt for your target, whether it's "lard-ass", "beanpole", "big nose", "corpse breath", or "banana picker".
But you still may have honestly wonderful thoughts about and friendships with fat people, skinny people, rhinos, people who need an Altoid, and Mexicans.

so his life's ruined over "banana picker"

How stupid in all ways.

That really sucks, SB. Hopefully, everything will turn out for the better.

Yeah, at least Kramer's was actually theatric, and once he realized he was going down in flames he just went full blown racist...

Maybe i'm not understanding correctly, but.. Why are you torn up about this, again?

He'd never done this before.
I really hate racist comments...
he was a great friend
I had high hopes of him turning his life around.
He was really close to realizing his dreams.

...And he crashes and burns...

I think you answered your own my question..... Alcohol typically impairs anyone's good judgement...and like Withelm said (and yes I can't believe I am quoting him) in a stressful situation and in a spur of moment we might say things that we normally wouldn't.....it wasn't like he went into an all out rant...he used one dumb comment...just poor judgement but being impaired certainly helped with that...not to say he should be excused for his actions, because I am sure it's too late for that now.....he will need friendship and support, and if you always consider him a friend, then you have take the good with the bad...although this is not what I would consider highly bad.....

well, not only is that a stupid racist slur that shouldn't offend anybody, but it's stupid that he would get in trouble at all for it.

Dude, that sucks. He's about to have a rough couple of years and may end up hating himself. DON'T turn your back on him, he called someone a banana picker, that's actually kinda funny. It's not even truly racist, it's just stupid and designed to be mean. It's not a big deal, stand by your friend, in the end family or friends are all that matters.

I've certainly known students to get away with worse.

I'm not really sure how calling some beaner a "banana picker" is going to send his dreams down the ****ter. More successful people have said worse and continued to thrive. And if you're a real friend of his, you won't give a ****.

I don't give a sh** about what he said. But getting cut from an internship program and potentially now from school for drunken disorderly conduct, fighting and racial comments for a person who was so close as he was just sucks. And there is nothing I can really do about it.

How is "banana picker" a racist term for Mexican? Shouldn't be like Orange picker or something?

Man that sucks. All over one stupid work. ''Banana picker''? People are wayyyy to sensitive. Did the banana picker guy get in trouble too? Did your friend try to plea his case? I mean he was under the influence of alcohol, you'd think they would have given him a warning or something.

That's stupid. He was drunk, wasn't he? Who doesn't say something racist when they're drunk?

...... anally?

EDIT: to get more into the topic... what your friend did could be explained as a bad excretation of residual matter from the anus and landed a couple of inches outside of the bowl.. but maybe he can appeal to the toilet paper so they can wipe that little peice of excrement so they won't do anything. He has good aiming before so maybe they'll let it all slip

Don't fret on that dark, smelly spot, my friend

Meh! .. disorderly behaviour.. fighting... shouting abuse.. he brought it on himself. Most colleges/universities have a no tolerance attitude to that kind of thing.
