Indonesian 2 year old has 2 pack a day habit

No.

I'm indifferent to things like this because stuff like this happens all the time. Maybe there's not a ton of chain-smoking toddlers out there, but children being endangered and neglectful parents are nothing new and are everywhere, despite what people like to think.

To put it bluntly, **** happens, that's life. People kill each other and themselves. Children go hungry or die of diseases, both curable and incurable. Small social groups are persecuted and eliminated because of arbitrary differences from the majority. Animals kill and eat each other. The environment is changing in a multitude of ways, sudden and gradual, violent and peaceful. The world isn't this happy little place where everything is wonderful, but everything I mentioned doesn't discount all the good things in life either. You take the good with the bad and vice versa, and despite what you might have me think, being indifferent to a neglected child half a world away doesn;t make me a bad person.

Bravo! Especially what's in bold. The funny thing is most of the people who act like it does make someone a bad person aren't doing **** to help those countries and their poor out. If you're going to judge others of that view then become one of those people who travel the world building missions and whatnot. I forget the exact name or title but I knew of a few people who did this for awhile.

You don't have to be in the Peace Corps in order to care that a lot of people lead terrible lives in many places around the world. Being indifferent to a certain degree is fine - we all can benefit from less stress - however, being completely uncaring is unnecessary at best.

I can agree about being completely uncaring but let's just say I won't lose any sleep over it. I felt sorry for all the death and destuction in Haiti and Chile from those earthquakes but I was able to sleep like a baby the same nights those happened. I don't expect any other countries let alone states to care about me or the rest of people in California when that long overdue quake hits us either.

I understand if someone goes so far as to laugh at some tragedy like that but I guess as you said, the right word for my feelings is that i'm indifferent.

Im a fan of indifference, but this is a 2 year old smoking like a 30 something trucker....

Why are people blaming the mother? It was the father who got the kid hooked on the old cigerettos. The mother obviously doesn't want him smoking, but what is she gonna do about it? The father is obviously not a nice person, shes probably had a go at him about it, and he probably beat her down.

Of course the father has blame in this situation...but the article specifically talks about the mother trying to get him to quit. It's pathetic and laughable. If your child is doing something like this, you don't try, you do! If you want the kid to stop smoking, QUIT GIVING HIM THE FREAKING CIGARETTES! He's two years old. I mean, who is the parent? This woman is acting like the child is the one in charge and this is some sort of negotiation.

It reminds me of a segment in Dana Carvey's latest standup routine where he mocks all of these parents who 'negotiate' with their children over baths and riding in car seats.

'Greggers...what did we agree to?'

Officials have offered to buy the family a car if he quits, but his father said: 'He looks pretty healthy to me. I don't see the problem.

Saw this earlier, it's insane. Poor kid will die of cancer before he's even a teen with how much he's smoking. The parents should both be jailed and fined, and the kid should be taken to a caring foster family. Sadly I expect neither to happen.

I never said I was uncaring. I care. I help, but I only help those that I can, and if I can't I'm not going to keep myself up at night because I wasn't able to save everyone.

Maybe his parents and him can immigrate to Canada or Britain, so they can take advantage of the universal health care system.

You missed the point...

Where does it say the mother has any role in the decision to give the kid cigerettes? It's the father, the mother has **** all to do with it. It is the old man that gives the kid his smokes.

Like i said, what is she gonna do? Report him to social services? They don't even have social services in Indonesia.

Actually nobody knows if the mother has any power. All we have is 2nd hand info. And besides if you do the math, it seems like they are netting a negative with the kid's habit, unless the mother works as well. If she does work, she could quit the work and they would not have the money to feed the kid and the terrible habit.

Okay I misread it's the minimum wage, the father probably makes mroe.

This is a disgrace to parenting. There is no way any child should be allowed to smoke, until the age of 8.
