Cannes: Foresight Weighs In With $120M Disaster Pic ‘Inversion’

By THE DEADLINE TEAM | Sunday May 18, 2014 @ 5:55am PDTTags: Cannes Film Festival, Foresight Unlimited, Inversion

Foresight Unlimited today officially unveiled plans for a $120M-budged sci-fi action film titled Inversion, about what would happen if Earth lost its gravity. There’s no director yet, but financing is in place via Hong Kong’s Pegasus Motion Pictures and shooting is scheduled to start in January 2015. The script, from Bragi Schut and Children Of Men scribe David Arata, centers on a global chase against the clock to save Earth’s inhabitants, traveling from China to Europe to the U.S. where among other things New York City is completely inverted. Philip Lee (Cloud Atlas), Michael Nozik (Syriana) and Markus Barmettler (Conviction) are producers. It’s an unusually big budget for a pic that kicks off on the Croisette, but Forsight, the producer behind Lone Survivor and 2 Guns as well as the upcoming Rob Reiner pic And So It Goes and the Spike Lee-Justin Timberlake film Spinning Gold is clearly aiming for a big splash. The project was introduced to buyers just ahead of the Cannes market kickoff, with Foresight chairman and CEO Mark Damon and president Tamara Birkemoe already completing deals in territories including Spain, Russia, Benelux, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, South Africa, Philippines, the Middle East, Turkey, India and Thailand.

“We are thrilled with the sales that Mark Damon and his Foresight Unlimited team have done,” said Nozik in today’s announcement. “The market’s response has been so strong, it confirms this film is an original and incredibly fresh story that asks, what if gravity, the most taken for granted and least understood part of nature, betrayed us.”

Scott Waugh, who recently helmed the global box office hit Need for Speed, is in final negotiations to direct the $120-million dollar sci-fi epic Inversion for Foresight Unlimited, the company behind Lone Survivor and 2 Guns.

Here's the synopsis: The film follows two unlikely heroes, a young Chinese scientist and a street smart American expat, on a frenzied journey across the globe to save Earth from an apocalyptic threat - a total reversal of gravity that causes whole cities and civilizations to uproot and plummet into the sky.

Currently in pre-production, Inversion was scripted by Bragi Schut (Season of the Witch) and Academy Award-nominee David Arata (Children of Men), and will be produced by Michael Nozik (Syriana), Markus Barmettler (Conviction) and Philip Lee (Cloud Atlas), with an expected start date of April 2015.

Waugh is a former stuntman who appeared in movies like Spider-Man and Bad Boys II and went on to co-found the commercial production company Bandito Brothers with Mike "Mouse" McCoy. Waugh and McCoy made their feature directorial debut on the surprise hit Navy SEAL action flick Act of Valor.

Warcraft‘s Travis Fimmel has been set to star in Paul Haggis co-scripted sci-fi pic Inversion. Directed by Peter Segal (Tommy Boy), it’s being produced by Hong Kong- and Beijing-based Facing East. Mark Damon’s Foresight Unlimited is selling in Cannes. The story follows a street-wise American con man and a young Chinese physicist as they race against the clock to save the earth from a terrifying loss of gravity. Haggis wrote the screenplay with David Arata (Children Of Men) and Bragi Schut (Season Of The Witch). Co-financiers are Hong Kong based Pegasus Motion Pictures and Sun Entertainment. Huaxia Film Distribution will co-produce and will release in China. Principal photography starts in September.

HahThe plot for this makes me laugh. When I was about 5 or 6 I would ask my mom everyday on the way to school "What would happen if there was no gravity?"..and now that idea is going to be a block buster film! Child me is extremely excited.
