The two-hour season premiere of "Lost" got everyone's timeline senses tingling, but it only took "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau one word to clarify fans' understanding of Marvel movie continuity.

When asked via Twitter where (or rather, when) "Iron Man 2" falls in relation to 2008's "Incredible Hulk," Favreau said the upcoming sequel actually falls "before" Edward Norton's adventure as the green goliath.

Of course, this seems to make perfect sense, given what we know of "Iron Man 2" and the final scene of "Incredible Hulk," in which Tony Stark approaches General Ross in a bar to talk with him about his "unusual problem."

In the final "Hulk" scene, Stark asks Ross, "What if I told you we were putting a team together?" — inferring that he's not only aware of Nick Fury's "Avengers" team, but is also a member. This would seem to indicate that the armored superhero's status as a solo act in "Iron Man 2" plays nice with Favreau's timeline for the Marvel movie universe, despite the order in which the films were released.

However, that doesn't mean the brief comment hasn't spawned some questions, too. With Stark appearing to become a member of the Avengers in the time between the finale of "Iron Man 2" and "Incredible Hulk," one has to wonder which of the other Marvel films might fill in the gap in the overall continuity.

Additionally, if "The Avengers" shows us the team's origin, it stands to reason that the 2012 superhero team-up film could actually fall before "Incredible Hulk," too (or possibly run parallel to the "Hulk" timeline).

Got all that? Yeah, me neither... but I think we can all agree that May 7 can't come soon enough.

Thanks for posting...it's further support for the idea that Marvel had a clue what they were doing all along. It was obvious, IMO, that they introduced Hulk with the full intention of using him again. Of course they've all said all along they don't know what the future of Hulk is, but it's very likely it's been sketched out for a long time. I just don't think they'd have spent the money to make the movie as a stand alone...they had a plan, and IMO, a great one. Looking very forward to this series and the pay off!!

No suprises here, now if RDJ can talk Norton into returning, then we are really on.

I agree Fat Tone.
I really hope Norton comes back

I like this because it says they aren't neglecting TIH, when I saw the Comic-Con footage I was thinking after TIH's return was great and all but didn't garner much mainstream attention, the folks at IM2 were just gonna ignore it in the timeline. Now it's nice to see they have a real game plan.

I love that, I hope Norton returns in a sequel or even The Avengers.

You really can't blame him for being mad at Marvel, but I think that's all water under the bridge now.

I could see him and RDJ having a heart-to-heart and getting Norton to come back.

No surprises here. I don't think this knew news really means anything, people are thinking about it too much.

RDJ could convince a Hasidic to eat pulled pork doused in bacon bits, he'd totally be able to Norton back if he was unwilling. Though I don't think Norton is bitter, he's expressed a lot of openness to MTV about Avengers, provided the script doesn't suck.

Barring script issues or production issues in terms of Marvel wavering on the director's choices or some major fueds among execs and the creative team over direction of the film, the only way I see Norton walking is if he has another commitment that he simply can't turn away from.

I hope you are right... HULK deserves as much attention as the other big names such as Batman, Superman, Spider-man and Iron Man in spite of not doing as well in theatre's. HULK is a larger-than-life character meant to shock and amaze and the Avengers would SUCK without him... OK, maybe not suck but I would be UTTERLY dissapointed!

Me as well, The Hulk has always been on of my favorites. I think he is a very under-appreciated character.

I think Hulk would probably be bigger at the moment if Ang Lee's Hulk was never made and The Incredible Hulk was released in a less crowded summer. A lot of things worked against that film, IMO.

The avengers movie will somewhat be based around the ultimates with the team trying to stop a Hulk on the loose in NYC or something like that.

Makes sense.

Based on what was shown at Comic-con, Tony is against joining Nick Fury and his "superhero boy band"...yet in "The Incredible Hulk," he approaches General Ross about how they're "putting a team together".

So in IM2 he's against it and by the time TIH comes around he supports it.

I guess the chronological order goes like this:

-The First Avenger: Captain America-->Iron Man-->Iron Man 2-->Thor-->The Incredible Hulk-->The Avengers

...and with the rumors of the Avengers opening scene being of the team taking down the Hulk, it all seems to make sense.

Wouldn't The Incredible Hulk when it comes to the timeline be a little more stretched out?

There was the Lab accident at the University and Hulk/Banner's fugitive status which is for 5 years.

During that time there could be Iron Man 1 and 2 then Banners discovery in South America and then finishing off his part of the story?

Banner has the accident years prior to IM1 and 2...

Like you said, we meet up with Banner on the run 5 years after the accident. Presumably he was already on the run long before Tony Stark was kidnapped in IM.

The chronology makes sense. Can't wait for all of these films!

I didn't know Brett Favre had a brother. And why do we care what he has to say about Iron Man 2?

Oh god, really? That is such a great scene to be wasted at the start. We need some plot development first for that to work. I want to see Captain America struggling to deal with his situation, Thor dragging his heels over joining and finally some reason as to why they are actually taking down the Hulk before that scene actually happens.

Maybe the film will start with them in combat and then show flashbacks to each character.

I thought Norton was going to come back . Norton himself said he wants to, and Marvel is using the Hulk in the Avengers, so why not?
