Is Beer and drugs over rated?

I can see most of your post as level headed except for this part. It's been my experience that after people have a couple of drinks, the "bonding" that goes on isn't easily remembered. What usually follows is fights, dangerous sex and bad headaches.
That's kind of a gross generalization that is mostly re-inforced by comedy sketches and television, not necessarily real life. True there are some people who start fights, have dangerous sex and become a**holes on boozes...however that typically is brought on by a pre-existing condition of being aggressive, sexually irresponsible and a general a**hole sober.

And, despite being incredibly plastered, I remember quiet a bit about nights I was drunk. You don't just black out and lose complete spans of time, and least not right away. You remember vague impressions, it's like having a dream.

And yes, you do bond with your friends while you are drunk. That's why "drinking buddies" tend to be so close.

All in how and why you do it.

I personally, never saw the point in it until I went through bouts of depression this year. Which would make drinking, for me, stupid and irresponsible.

Not to mention empty callories

Can't stand beer, the smell and taste is putrid.

I do get drunk every so often and remember everything that happens, so I get the pleasure of waking up the next day holding my head in my hands as I recall all the embaressing things I said and did. Although, when I got smashed last Saturday I did have blank spots, but it had been 3 months since I had consumed alcohol.

Never been temtped by drugs. Though I might consider trying magic mushrooms or a hash brownie. But I'm not smoking, snorting, injecting or ingesting anything else.

I love beer. If it didn't dehydrate you so badly, I'd substitute it for every other liquid, save for coffee.

Believe me, it's quite real. Take it from someone who spent 15 years going to parties while being one of a few people sober if not the only person sober. The consequence-free hijinks in TV & movies are sugar coated generalizations. More often than not, getting drunk comes at a price. Sometimes it's just a hangover & vomiting. Sometimes, it's much worse. It's no mystery that if high brain functioning is inhibited that bad things will follow.
As far as the "vague impressions" go, that's not really bonding is it? Real friendship is based on common interests and connections. There are numerous ways to engage in this without alcohol.

Agreed.

Whenever I'm drunk the police almost always show up by the end of the night and I have to feign sobriety.
So, I mean I'd probably be in a safer position if I stayed sober but who wants that. Do you want to be safe your whole life? Following every law to the letter?
**** that, spend a night in jail.

Now you have a story to tell.

No.
If you want to feel sick and apathetic all of the time then take Oxycontin.

alcohol is awesome, just know your limits and play responsibly and it makes for tons of fun nights and great memories

Well, what if someone didn't want to feel like that but wanted the same type of high?

Alcohol is awesome.

Yet, am I any less of a man for hating beer?
