Is the Scifi genre officially dead?

I'm sick of remakes or adaptions of previous works. There are too Star Trek, Star Wars, and other movies that have been made. The only Sci-Fi originality is added on from a franchise. The last time I saw a major original science fiction film was Cloverfield. James Cameron's avatar gives me some hope. However there are too many movies about humanoid aliens who make war or piece with mankind. This is not the 1950s we are afraid of atomic bombs killing us on a daily basis, nor the 1980s where cartoons are the only concept available. Let's have some imagination people!

There's no way I'd classify Cloverfield as an original science fiction film. It's basically Godzilla but with another monster.

No genre ever really dies, they just temporarily fall out of favour. The whole thing is cyclical.
