I remember when I first saw "The New World", I was amazed at how beautiful that film was, it was like a rush of beauty that was shoved upon me, and I could barely stand it, it was pure art. I said that I may never see such a beautiful piece of art ever again and I'm WRONG again. I would like to say that Bryan Singer is the greatest director for any type of film, he can do film-noir, action, romance, drama, and even comedy. I never knew how amazing he was, I never knew he could focus on so much detail, that you would obviously realize that he's read MORE than enough Superman comic books. That's one thing that has finally separated Bryan Singer from every other director, is his attention to the details. When Superman flies into Space, he can hear everything, he can hear all of us, he can hear us....even when we don't need him, but he's always there.
I always wonder if a real Superman ever existed, would 9/11 happen?? Of course it wouldn't, but in reality, it did. We die in real life, in our world, but in a Superman world, were just fine, it's like a physical God looking over us, it's just amazing. When he flies into the sky, towards the sun, he can regain his strength, now that's a detail that can always be forgotten, but not by Bryan Singer, he made sure we knew about all of Superman's ability's, and things that can help him. And for any hardcore Superman fan like me, this wasn't new to me, but for the average fan(or movie goer), it must be amazing to see something that you didn't really know in the first place. I'm also amazed at how Bryan paced this film, every single scene is paced in (maybe) a slow way, that engrosses you into the scene, into the characters, and of course the plot.
Which is a very simple plot, yet as complex as any drama, adding many, MANY layers into one character. Now the way Singer paces this film, reminded me of "King Kong", but without the boredom. This film is pure love, it's not pretentious, or long or whatever. It's Singer's love for one the greatest Superhero's of any generation, he directs this film, like any epic. Even the action scenes are paced in a way that made me feel like I was in danger. Singer puts you in the danger zone, he puts you in the Air Plane, he puts you in the boat when it's sinking. He wants you to feel like your really going to DIE, but your not going to die, not in Superman's world. I love the fact, that this film is long, and every scene means something, every scene feels like music. And when he flew in the sky, it felt like poetry, peaceful poetry. I loved every single scene between Superman and Lois Lane, it was so romantic and astonishing to see them together.
When they see each other at the top of the Daily Planet building, it's just astonishing. The amount of attention and love towards this scene, is a dream come true for me. And Singer actually takes his time with this scene, I swear to GOD, I thought I was watching a Terrence Malick film with this scene, because it's so PACED, but amazing, it was like looking at a beautiful flower unfolding for the first time sense I was a kid(lol). She takes off her shoes, steps onto his feet, and then he takes her into the sky, just like old times. She says, "I forgot how worm you are", and I heard so many women going nuts over this scene(obviously). I wanted them to be together, I wanted them to make out or something(lol), I wanted Superman to be with the woman that he loves more than life itself, I wanted them to be happy, but of course this can't happen(maybe).
Lois Lanes boyfriend(Richard), is a great person, a good guy, and Superman is a good guy, so he doesn't do sinful thinks like cheating, BUT I DON'T CARE(lol). I hope Singer is doing what he did with the "X-Men" films, he didn't have Wolverine and Jean Grey kiss in the first one, but their lips locked up in the sequel, and hopefully this is what's gonna happen in the "SR" sequel in 2009, hehe. And anybody who thinks that Superman is invincible, should go see this film, because I have NEVER seen Superman take an a beating like in this film...EVER. He gets ruffed up in the comics MANY times, but I've never seen him get hurt so badly in the films, until now. Kevin Spacey is a great villain, this is probably his greatest performance sense "Pay it Forward", and that's saying ALOT. And he portrays Lex Luthur in a more cynical way, with subtle humor, he's not over the top like Gene Hackmen, he's like Liam Neeson in "Batman Begins", we know that he's gonna hurt somebody, it's just a matter of when, where, and of course who??
And when he finally gets to Superman, he doesn't talk trash like most villains, he just lets him have it, he lets his gang beat down Superman like he tried to steale something(lol). It was brutal, and it ticked me off, because I don't like seeing my hero's getting hurt, it just doesn't feel right to me(lol). The last 30 or 40 minutes is probably the most amazing thing I've seen sense the last 2 hours of "The Return of the King", or the first hour of "Batman Begins." The CGI in this film is well........REAL!!! I haven't seen CGI like this sense either "Titanic" or ANY of "The Lord of the Rings" films. I couldn't believe I was looking at visual effects, because that Plane looks real, okay, it looked real, it moved like it was real, and it's just......awesome.
So it's great to see a man fly, but this film is a masterpiece because of it's director, Bryan Singer. Now the reason that "X3" was really bad , is because it felt like it was being directed by an ADD kid on speed, Brett Ratner. He didn't care about the material that he was working with, he didn't want to care and that's mostly Fox Studio's fault, for not giving him the time to care. And he just didn't love the X-Men, the way I do, or the way Bryan Singer did. So I don't care about the next X-Men film, it's all about Superman, Spider-Man and Batman from now on(for me).
This is also the greatest Summer Blockbuster I've seen, sense "Minority Report", I just love this film. Oh, and to top it all off, is when Superman's son throws a Piano at one of the bad guy's, to save his mother Lois Lane. It's never happened in the comics, but I think we got a great character in the future Superman issues, hehe. I love this kid, I think he's just such a natural at being a kid, he also has alot of mystery to him, which adds alot when your playing the son of Superman. And when Superman talks to him, when he's asleep in his bed, he tells him about being an outcast, that he will be his strength. That he will watch over him, that he's basically not a dead beat father, but it was also a sad scene, because he can't be a real father to him(maybe). But there's always that sequel in 2009, hehe. I'm also surprised at how great Brandon Routh is as Superman, Bryan Singer really knows how to pick his actors. He picked an actor who can show vulnerability, and that's great, because Superman is in a vulnerable place in his life, in this film. And this guy can really be intense when he has to be, but he can also show alot of sadness in his eye's, and in the end he's SUPERMAN. I love this film, and I give it a 10/10.
